Thanks darling daughter. Wasn't well, then went on holiday and been flat out. Been trying to secure riding gear and insurance. Trying to negotiate a venue for the big reveal and of course the British weather is SHOCKINGLY WET and not favourable to motorcycling at the moment. We can't even play cricket and for England this is a national disaster!

I like your videos on the G310R, I have a 2019 model and find it a nice little runaround. Easy to maneuver out of my garage side door, and very capable for riding in modern day traffic. Interesting to watch you tackle all the different areas of the bike, hopefully I will never have to because everything seems so entangled together. I also have a 43 year old BMW R100RS, so much easier to work on, but such a pain to get out of my garage. Thanks for sharing. 🙂

🏍No fuss, capable and not bad looking are all reasons I chose the G310R. Entangled - a bit but pretty logical I find and easy enough to work with as long as you're not in a rush. I've genuinely enjoyed this project and can't wait to show you guys the final product. Looks better than I'd hoped and you'll see in a few weeks. I am looking forward to enjoying the ride and taking you guys with me -- we'll see about that, no promises just yet. But always on the lookout for the next project and I'm rather jealous of your R100RS. If I can find a G310GS at the right price, so it gives me £££ to put my mark on it then I'll be going for one of those. But I also fancy an older BMW and doing something radical with it -- not sure, but like all good things I'm sure the idea will crystallise over the coming months. Thanks again for your comments and for watching 2 mugs. We really are grateful. Ian 🍺🍺

We fix these all the time. I think the video was uploaded a long time before "Two Mugs In A Workshop" became a reality. I used it to show a customer what the issue looks like. Simple software update. Thanks for watching though and if you like the software stuff, we showed a little footage from the BMW G310R motorcycle project when we updated the software and set the mileage correctly on the new instrument cluster.

Looking at the mods and the bodges and the bar brace unfortunately you have bought this bike from someone who probably spent most of his time trying to wheelie it. I think it would have been better with hindsight to buy from a main dealer. But we are learning as we go and certainly your videos are great for some of us who might one day be doing our own maintenance.
@2MugsWorkshop10 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching and following us - truly flattered. Here in the UK, these bikes don't have a wide market - unlike other parts of the world. I walked away from a G310R at main dealer with almost delivery mileage for £3000. Brand new, they are £5000. The resale values aren't super strong and there are always plenty for sale -- so that was one reason I took the risk and bought off eBay. Plus as you correctly say, it wouldn't have made much of a project for KZbin. So £1300 was an absolute bargain given that on the whole the bike is in good shape, and the electrical side is my real area of expertise. But there is still plenty to come and a driving factor in the initial purchase decision is I'm not a fan of the colour schemes so wanted a black frame and black wheels to create something individual. I'm pretty sure the bike was stolen but it isn't on the register, and as a result I don't believe it fell into "the wrong hands" for long enough to do any damage other than cosmetics really. I've had a blast working on it - totally different from the 4 wheel stuff we do and it has left me craving to take on another BMW - perhaps the G310GS next! Addictive stuff.

I used to do these out of the car but for the last several years I just pull the gearbox off do them in-situ. N47 is easy compared to a 4 wheel drive B48 trust me. Nice video guys - subscribed👍
@2MugsWorkshop10 ай бұрын
Really appreciate the kind words. The N47 is both a blessing and a curse ... we're only a small shop but do plenty of them. With many of these we pull the engine because customers are realising that it is a good chance to rebuild the turbo, intake manifold and we're seeing more of the high mileage cars with bottom end damage. So having the engine out kind of works for us - can free up the ramps whilst we're waiting for parts or for suppliers to rebuild turbos etc. We've actually got one at the moment that that the customer did not want to repair because it suffered oil starvation and needs a. new crank, etc. So Marc agreed a price with him and will be rebuilding it. We will try to show some of that once the parts arrive!

Someone suggested an N47 engine transplant into my vehicle. After seeing the effoft to change the chain i don't think I'll bother! Wonder why they didn't put it at the front. Is this the engine type that's had a few issues in police cars destroying itself?
@2MugsWorkshop10 ай бұрын
Put it this way, I'd only buy a car with an N47 if it was extremely cheap and I got it straight in the workshop and replaced the chains etc. It can be done in a day, as long as all the parts are lined up and ready to go and you don't find any additional issues along the way. The design is a bit mind-boggling but the good news is that once replaced, you should get many miles of motoring from the unit. It is going to be interesting to see if the later B47 engines suffer the same fate .. they don't look much different and we suspect they will. Police cars - think they all used the 6-cylinder engines and I believe was more to do with EGR cooler. But let's not forget that those cars probably aren't run as standard (tuned?) .. generally the 6-cylinder engines are more hardy than the 4-cylinders ... but they are not immune from chain issues ... they are just taking longer to get there!

I discuss this in Episode 3 (“REWIND!”). The TVS partnership is 10 years old now and has been renewed. Development of some of the electric bikes is being done out in India too. Better quality than a lot of the cheap bikes that have flooded the market here in UK, but the BMW price tag? But for £1300 absolute bargain and I’ll be putting it through its paces this summer around some interesting roads here in UK!

Maybe the two bolts in the box where to replace the two shouldered bottom ones? Good value at 6 quid though!! Re the radiator pressure test, could you drill a hole and fit an airline thingy to the old cap and make your own adapter? Coming along nicely.... and it looks better without the reflector!
@2MugsWorkshop10 ай бұрын
Agree that it looks better without reflectors but I like to be seen, so I will put something there ... IF I CAN STOP THEM DROPPING OFF 🤣 The adaptor can be bought for around £40 and if you looked at eBay for a while, no doubt a second hand one would come up. I have a complete list of all the cars that adaptor fits -- I photographed the leaflets in the pressure test kit, so will upload those once I work out how. The bolt - cheap and nasty and it had a nut on the end too. A more elegant solution would be to find some M5 x 14mm screws without the neck on them. But like I said, the original bolts are absolutely fine and once all the panels are back on, will hardly be visible. Thanks for the comments ... hopefully the next episode on Thursday!

Which car/engine is it? Is this common at that mileage? It sounds like a large job from your previous comment.
@2MugsWorkshop11 ай бұрын
It is the N47 4-pot 2 litre diesel engine. Engine out job. Marc can nail these in a day if all the parts are lined up and no complications arise but he often spots other issues on the way through the job.. Turbos, EGR issues, crank pulley, intake manifold coking are some of the more common ones.

Is that an engine out job to change the guides and chain on that model?
@2MugsWorkshop11 ай бұрын
Correct! We only use genuine BMW parts for the repair and the vehicle will get a full service as part of the deal. It can be done in a day, but being a small workshop with 2 mugs, we take our time on these and make sure everything is spot on before releasing the car back to the customer. On this particular vehicle we "think somebody has been there before" so might be a few nasties as we go and wouldn't be surprised at 145,000 miles if it needs attention in other areas. But for the customer's sake, let's hope not! Thanks for your support. Ian

Useful video for beginners. The procedure for the rear wheel/cush drive is applicable to the majority of chain drive motorbikes. Nice to see grease being used that doesn't affect rubber, I personally use red rubber grease for that, save the nice silicon stuff for brake sliders! The project is coming along nicely, and I look forward to seeing what BMW are going to do👍

New to all of this so keep the comments coming - I'm flattered that people are taking the time to get involved. Thank you. My line of thought on the sprockets ... they're made of cheese ! The chain was replaced by the seller as the bike had been standing a while. I thought about the front sprocket but if (the big if that is ....) I decide to keep the bike I will be changing both sprockets and the chain for something far better quality than the BMW parts. Dealer assures me these eat chains and sprockets but I guess at such cheap prices - if you can be bothered to constantly replace them - then it isn't a bad deal. I'd just rather have something that lasts a little longer personally. Be interested to hear any other thoughts you have as we go along. Thanks again and welcome!
@markhewitt640611 ай бұрын
Odd they eat chains as a relatively low power bike. Not sure who BMW use but with my chain drive bike I tend to go for JT sprockets and DID chains, sometimes EK. DID make camchains as well so a good brand. Sometimes you can get heavy duty chains and sprockets for some bikes which is good quality, sometimes a wider chain. Places like M&P in Wales, Wemoto in Sussex etc sell these things. Chain/sprockets are kind of treated like brake discs/shocks in cars and best replaced at the same time. Then you have o ring chains and x ring chains. Google it, more info than I could give!

Interesting to see what you've done and the way you worked through it. It seems like a job you couldn't have done without the BMW software. Didn't know you could update bikes software with the car software!
@2MugsWorkshop11 ай бұрын
Thank you! Agreed and I specialise in electrical and software on the cars. Motorcycles have less control units and this particular model they are pretty basic. We may get inside those a little more once the bike is "finished" (are they ever finished?) and certain aspects - like writing the mileage from the engine ECU (DME) to the instrument cluster (KOMBI) was significantly different and kind of stumbled on the answer with the help of one or two trade contracts.
