KC9CUK, it's Richard Andrew here. First of all my apologies for commenting, however it is somewhat confusing just from looking at the thumbnail that all the way beaming into Canada or Ontario that CB FM is Legal and again my apologies, I cannot help but notice that KC9CUk is reminiscent of an AMteur radio call sign or General Radio Class Call sign or license. SO again, my apologies for misunderstanding the title " NEW Cobra 29 LTD Classic Dual Mode FM AM 40 ch CB 0:05 / 25:00 NEW Cobra 29 LTD Classic Dual Mode FM AM 40ch CB KC9CUK 1.73K subscribers Subscribe 257

Totally new to CB. This review is great; the Cobra 75 sounds perfect for my use case. Quick question: how well does that glass-mounted antenna work? I understood that antennas needed to have a metal mount? A window mount would be perfect. Again, thank you for the video!
@Chris-lm3nt19 күн бұрын
I think it's fair to say that if you can clearly define your goals for having a CB radio in your car, that will help with the antenna decision. Typically, the best performance from any CB radio can be realized when using a 3/4 wave (four foot) fiberglass CB antenna mounted square in the middle of your vehicle roof top with the coax cable bonded to the chassis at the antenna feed point. Any other CB antenna configuration will probably yield lesser results. Glass-mount CB antenna's can work but the efficiency of this type of antenna design will be less than the 3/4 wave fiberglass antenna example from above. In other words, you can expect shorter range with the glass-mounted design. But if the desired use case is to listen to and or talk to other CB radio users on the highway that are in close range then try the glass mount design but lower your receive/transmit range expectations.

This is the second review video of yours I have watched. Very good stuff... In the mid-70s, I owned a Cobra 139, a 23-channel AM/SSB rig, if memory serves. When the transition to 40 channels occurred, I installed a rotary switch and added crystals to extend the rig's reach to 27.505. I had previously modified the clarifier to slide, I believe, 20kHz, enabling access to frequencies between channels 22 and 23, as well as those between every fourth channel. Back then, there was significant SSB activity between channels 15 and 16. It was an enjoyable setup, especially with a 500-watt linear amplifier bridging the radio and the antenna. The amplifier's power demands were so great that I had to upgrade the alternator in my Blazer; otherwise, the lights would dim so severely at night that the road became invisible. Those experiences, among others up until the mid-80s, steered me towards becoming a ham operator.

I appreciate this video is a year old now but thought it was worth commenting. I use a washing line pole base which screws into the ground, I take a battery drill with a 25mm bit and drill a hole in the ground first to make it easier to screw the washing line base in. In the UK I have one with multiple inserts to hold different size poles 1" to 2.5". I also use some 13mm screw in tent pegs and a battery impact driver as the ground alwasy seem to have stones and this powers through them.

Great video keep it up! Question so you just set everything up and it welds itself with the click of a button?
@kc9cuk3 ай бұрын
That is correct, you use a electric igniter and thermite melts the copper into the mold to bond and weld everything together.

I have a question to ask you about this new radio, I ride a 2018 Honda Goldwing turing motorcycle and I wonder if It would work with my wireless cordo headset.
@Chris-lm3nt4 ай бұрын
Double check your particular Cardo headset but according to the Cardo Packtalk PRO user manual, it will support pairing to two Bluetooth devices. Make your cellphone device #1 and the Cobra 75 All Road device #2. Use voice commands to select. The 75 All Road is designed to support pairing/connecting to third party Bluetooth headsets that correctly implement standard Bluetooth profiles for headsets. For 75 All Road PTT control Cobra offers a wireless PTT button. This also a Bluetooth device but pair's and connects to the 75 All Road through the Bluetooth BLE path. However, this accessory is not waterproof and does require recharging periodically if operated on it's internal battery only.

@kc9cuk3 ай бұрын
Yes, the radio is cable of GMRS, some are ready out of the box and others require mars/cap type mod. You can monitor 2 freqs at the same time, one freqs on each side of the radio. V+V or U+U or V+U Thanks for your comment, please subscribe, like, and share the video it really does help.

I have a DX Commander antenna in my back yard thats mounted at ground level. Its a great antenna with great performance but the problem in the summer is grass cutting and the guys with lawn mowers moving around my antenna and the radials laid on the ground. So I’m planning to get a Comet CHA-250HD HF vertical antenna and I want to mount it at the side of my house on a aluminium telescopic mast. When I started loking up the mast prices I was shocked. A Spiderbeam 12m aluminum mast is $600! Other HD aluminum masts are also super expensive. The Cha-Porta 25ft mast is cheaper at $438, still expensive but I like the locking mechanism does not use any clamps that are difficult to tighten when you have all that weight above you. So I might go with that one. Also besides the Comet vertical antenna I want to mount a Diamond VHF/UHF vertical as well on the top of the Cha-Porta mast. Do you think there will be variations in SWR on both antennas being so close to each other even tho I wont be running both at the same time? Thanks for all the great ground mount ideas with the PVC pipes! I will definitely use those tips as I dont plan to make a concrete base for the aluminum mast.

Sounds like it is going to be a fun setup, I would so some testing to see if the antennas interact. Thanks for your comment, please subscribe, like and share the video it really does help.

Question… Max distance from car to reaching someone ?
@Chris-lm3nt4 ай бұрын
Depends on a several factors like the antenna, placement of the antenna, your height above the average terrain, propagation conditions etc.. So not an simple question to answer. However, on just about any given day and considering two vehicles with properly installed and efficient antennas expect about 3 to 4 miles on the highway.
@kc9cuk3 ай бұрын
To many variables to give you a good answer but a general rule of thumb is CAR to CAR 2 miles is common, CAR to BASE 5 Miles is common, and BASE to BASE 15-20 miles is common. This is a starting point to give you an idea and variables like antenna height, antenna gain, TX power, Noise floor, and ground elevation, the terrain can make a big difference. Remember this is just a starting point, the range can be much better than these estimates depending on your situation. Or you could simply buy the new SPIDERBEAM 12m XHD pole which got the tip segment at a diameter of 0.7inch and will keep up all the small antennas at the very tip in the height of 40ft (12m) without bending at all. Vibroplex told me they will be available in september...

I think I’ve commented on this subject here before maybe a year ago. Anyway, I prefer an all mode but Cobra has an interesting “piece of kit” with a convenient installment niche. I think it may be a while if ever that CB manufacturers evolve to remote mountable control heads with a separate microphone being as there is still the trend towards big box rig installs being prolific. Although I’m currently not active in two way radio since my Dad, a fellow ham went in the nursing home, and a good friend who I’ve been in the hobby with for 28 years past away, and talking to “strange men” 😆 on the radio just isn’t a thing for me anymore. I haven’t gotten back on consistently in almost a year. Maybe it’s changed. I doubt it. Comment on Ham vs. CB radio as a licensed ham since 1996: There is a degree of arrogance infecting some amateur radio operators simply because they took a test or series of tests to advance their operating privileges. It’s completely unjustified. There are jerks in both services whether it’s on social media as well as on air. I think the jerks on social media tend to be more on the ham side, and it’s a toss up on air. Sometimes it’s in person. Too many people with advice to give when none was solicited. Ham jerks on air are more prevalent on 80/75m and 7.200 mhz on 40, although I haven’t monitored in a few months to confirm that is still the case. I assume so. On CB, there is a prevalence of immaturity in radio skill. It goes with the territory. CB can be a gateway drug to better services. It was for me anyway. Both services have advantages. I recall one of my favorite local 2m personalities referring to CB as the calamity band, and that’s an accurate description. Ham radio has devolved that way on some of the HF freqs.since removal of the code tests but maybe it drew more people in, more of the right people would be preferred. Now I’m coming across as arrogant 🤦♂️ All I can say is “when in Rome do as the Romans do”. CB has its lingo, loose qso, and ham has a more rigid protocol. If CB’ers who are the lifers would just lay off the power and use it as it was intended, that would clean up so much of the clutter although propagation would still have some effect. It the government’s fault. Allocation of CB to 11 meters instead of VHF placed it in a part of the spectrum that favors skyward propagation and more interference from line noise. Oh well, gateway drug/service. There’s something better out there but the jerks are there as well.
