Do you eat those bonnies/skipjack? I've caught a few off the kayak and found them disgusting, couldn't even get passed the 1st mouthful.......even the cat won't touch it. Many feel the same in NZ and use them for big strip baits and nothing more (Much like parasite infested barracouta that is used only as bait, and nothing else, and if commercially caught gets exported by the container load - over 100,000 tons last year - to SA where it is remarketed as snoek). But I believe the secret to bonnies is 1) bleed them well and straight away 2) get them on to ice ASAP and 3) eat them same day...but as mentioned they are generally seen as poor eating in NZ and used for bait

@@robhenson480 i am not sure if they are the same species you get there or if they are even the same as the bonnies caught in Durban in warmer water. We do however eat them and they make amazing sashimi. We braai them, grill them and even make a pokebowl. Great fish hut best eaten the same day or before frozen. I do still eat them after being frozen but if frozen for more than 2 months it becomes shark bait.

We catch skip jack in the colder waters, and they taste amazing, but the further north you go, the temp of water increases, and the species change to Bonito. The bonnies get much bigger than our skippies but taste much more fishy.

@James-yx7kb when we got there we saw close to 100 boats on the water it was chaos and most people that I saw later showed up on my tiktok page with lots of tail. It was a frenzy bro. I'm still trying to land my first red roman from the rocks :(

As jy mooi loer sal jy sien ek gebruik geen swivel of sinker nie, ek snell knoop eenvoudig ‘n 5,6,7,8/0 bkk inline circle en dan my aas en ek gooi nie veel verder van my kayak af as wat dit diep is nie. Sit amper nooit vas nie en die trace werk baie goed vir my. As jy pilchard hak moet die sirkel net baie proud oop wees en hy moet ‘n snell knot he anders werk hy nie…

Ek het ‘n 575 gehad. Ek is nog nie seker watter een ek meer van hou nie en gaan die 555 vir ‘n 30km roei vat en dan besluit. Die 555 is verseker baie meer stabiel en baie meer plek maar ek moet ook noem ek het nooit probleme met balans gehad op die 575 nie. Net ‘n baie goeie deal op die een gekry toe vat ek hom.

Stunning location and beautiful weather. Over the years, and from watching many yak fishing vids from multiple content producers I get the feeling that the general CT area has been fished hard and that all the big fish have long been taken leaving only small to medium models. Would that be an accurate comment or because of the cold water and natural species the size of fish caught are generally on the small side?

Hey Rob, thanks for the comment. I don't have first-hand experience with old-time fishing and sizes but I have heard that the fishing was waaay better back then. I'm not sure if the sizes have decreased over time but there has been some decent size Atlantic Bonito and Yellowtail landed that I have seen. Not every day though. The species of fish (Jacopever) caught in this video don't get very big. In fact, one of the fish I caught was 38cm and set the club record for this species. Pretty chuffed. Lovely tasting fish.

Yeah its a blue shark. Those big wide airplane wings and thin body give it away immediately. Worldwide distribution. Not really a concern at that size. They do have teeth but a normally a fairly timid species when young. They hang in large schools when young then roam the expanses of the ocean when bigger. Nice encounter.

Ek gebruik die noeby LT jigging(seker my gunstelling vir trol in die kaap en hy spin ook baie lekker) dan het ek die K5 jigging medium(rooi stok) lekker vir plekke soos struisbaai en arniston. Veral waar jy ‘n vis vinnig van die reef af wil ootrek… Slow pitch gebruik ek die Noeby nonsuch 6”5 260g stokkie. Ongelooflike aksie op hom en gaan hom meer in Struisbaai gebruik die jaar.
