Help me out: I was away from the hockey scene for roughly 20 years. The last year I paid any attention at all was 2003 when the Devils beat the Ducks in the Finals. That was also the last year I played in goal as a knee injury took me out. While I did note that pads were getting much longer and less shapely, the position was still played mostly hybrid butterfly-standup. I came back to the sport (to watch at least) in the late 2021 season and noticed a drastic change to how tendies played and how their equipment looked. When (roughly) did the position change over to the sliding, butterfly-only style of play?
@ChronicCast5 күн бұрын
in the same boat. took about 20 years off and have come back and have to learn this new butterfly style of play. I think practice is key for us guys. over time we will get it haha.
@user-io8sz7tf9t5 күн бұрын
patrick roy and his consequences basically. dude revolutionized the whole position, by the time he retired most goalies followed suit because it just worked so good
@augustussohn8934 күн бұрын
@@user-io8sz7tf9t I may have been poor at describing what I meant. I am trying to figure out when in the last 20 years or so did the goalies go to this "butterfly only" sliding all over the crease on their knees, taking every shot from the butterfly stance, with the boxy pads to go with it? It seems to have really taken off in the last 12 years or so, but it the position went seemingly from hybrid to butterfly only overnight.

With your stats, you have NO right to judge British goalies. How many games is this? One? In NIHL 1? Danny Crowe is better than you. Sorry you gave up on your reserve backup status and want to dump on others, but you probably couldn't catch a cold.

everything to like about a sportsman who's been at the top of his chosen sport for so many seasons. a true role-model on & off the ice for up & coming hockey players not just goaltender's. thanks for such a video & most of all many, many thanks to marc-andre fleury for the enjoyment he's brought to this wonderful game! merci.

I would love to see a video about his workouts and stuff. Id like to know the secret behind how hes so flexible after so many nhl seasons
@GoalieForce5 ай бұрын
I'd like to see his off ice training too. Secret to flexibility: Some are naturally more flexible than others but for guys like me it takes daily work. And pretty much every high level pro guy works on it daily. So, just good habits. I saw him the first time at U20 championships and what separated him already 20 years ago was the explosiveness and speed which he clearly has talent for. Some guys naturally have great jump ability that shows in the ice as amazing movement. When you make it even better with training and combine with other skills this is the result.
@caspianfolkesson66116 ай бұрын
This is interesting to see, Fleury isn't leading his movements with his head and eyes, but rather moves in the direction of the passed puck while turning. This habit usually is taught to be bad.
@GoalieForce6 ай бұрын
That is actually interesting that you are picking it up. If someone reads this comment it will help them to be much faster: In theory we want to lead with eyes and head which goalies at all levels aim to do and all the decent coaches teach it. BUT we have to look at real life outside of theory. If you are always doing "lead with the head and eyes before moving anything else" you'll be late often. Especially when you are with pro guys. Things just happen so fast that you can't simple "let me turn my head first". HERE IS ANOTHER SECRET that makes you faster: You scan the situation so you know the play before it happens. You know where the sticks are, what options players have and before the situation happens you know options. Visuals give your brain data to process and that is why it is super important to turn the head and scan the area. CONCLUSION: When you see the pass, you move to direction where you know the puck is going and while moving/turning you lock your eyes to the stick where the puck will land. And of course you'll need to know where the stick is where the pass is going to. Try this at the next practice and NOW YOU HAVE TAKE TO YOUR SPEED TO ANOTHER LEVEL.

He’s still old school on his pad strap setup. Most now have a couple Velcro straps he still has leather. Also they sit a lot lower on his skates unlike the hi water look most use today.
