One of my favourite group when I was child.

I wish Underworld would incorporate jazz infections more often - this traxk is kind of an outlier as such, as they've really only taken that route a few times before. Obviously there's the first segment of "Cups", the oft-forgotten "Beebop Hurry", a few hints in "Ova Nova" and "Iron Bones", as well as the collaborations with The Necks (though those guys are operating under a drastically divergent genre rubric) ... but that's pretty much it; Freur recorded some jazzy cuts like the conveniently-titled "Jazz is King" & "Jazz Bain", but only one or two were ever officially released (which describes a surprising proportion of their entire output as a band). An entire album solely dedicated to expounding upon "Cups", "Beebop Hurry" and "Darc" (or is it "Parc"? 🧐) sounds like a recipe for a certified classic - but hey, I'm just some pathologically-obsessive guy on the internet. Fun to imagine what a jazzy UW album might sound like. They actually summoned a trumpet player for the "Hundred Days Off" B-side thsg deserves far more recognition, "Like a Swimmer", it would be awesome if they did that more often!

I can’t get enough of the palpably “urban” atmosphere of this, and all other permutations of “Skyscraper”. Somehow through their prudent selection of synth patches, samples and drum beats they flawlessly capture the feeling of venturing through a vast cityscape. You can almost _SEE_ the grey concrete, the overwhelming throng of people the glistening exoskeletons of steel and glass. And you can hear the endless cacophony of car horns and that inexplicably calming ambient sound-mass of thousands of overlapping conversations, hundreds of vehicles going place-to-place, and beneath it all the faintly audible chorus of winds coursing between the skyscrapers.

This track feels like a B-side from „A Hundred Days Off“, but with a sinister presence lurking in its lugubrious waveforms. That filter on Karl’s voice makes it sound like he’s reciting some dark incantation; the tribal drums really add to that ritualistic vibe. There’s also a twangy guitar buried in the mix - only audible when wearing headphones, which also reveals how dense the overall texture is - which seems to signal that hope is not yet lost, and Karl will soon return to his cheerful countenance (not sure about that Rick fella though... xD)

The most stridently experimental track of the trilogy, and considering how divergent from „typical“ Underworld - if such a thing exists xD - the „Riverrun“ EPs are that’s saying quite a lot! Took me ages to appreciate this track, and now ! I really dig it; way they’ve blended Karl’s muffled vocals with the bass section. And Rick’s beloved tribal-Style drums that were so prevalent during the „A Hundred Days Off“/„Riverrun“ era always enhance the vibe! My only criticism, is that like a few other Riverrun segments it’s too short! If only they’d release extended stand-alone versions like they did with „Back in the Fears“, „Peach Tree“, „Play Pig“ and „Ancient Phat Farm Coat“.

A surprisingly contemplative conclusion to the most boisterous and abrasive instalment of the „Riverrun“ trilogy. I just wish they’d released an extended standalone mix as they did with „Back in the Fears“, „Peach Tree“, „JAL to Tokyo“ and a few others. As is the short duration is such a tease! xD

They should do another River run trilogy, with the same crazy nonconformist approach, they reign supreme over the intersection of weird and wonderful electronica, indomitable masters of strangeness boogie, avantronica.

Pure evil on a K trip..

Probably the most rudimentary track they've ever done. It's sufficient as an interlude - though IMHO a shorter duration, say 1:20, would've been preferable - but as a standalone track it's incredibly nondescript; it's hardly an exaggeration to state that anyone could've made this, and it wouldn't have taken long either. I don't hate it, I just believe they could have filled the time that this track occupies with something a little more engaging.

I'm probably wrong though
