No doubt there have been enough comments about ice buildup and the necessity of flying faster approach speeds with ice on the aircraft. Many, many years ago we landed a Metroliner II aircraft at CMH on Runway 28L after collecting very heavy ice (extreme) all over the airplane. Our approach speed was 160kts IAS. The airplane stalled only inches above the runway at just about 135kts. Please, please, please, people!! Beware of ice.

I don't know how anyone can watch the CCTV footage and say the plane was NOT on fire prior to impact. Flames and trailing smoke are not generally associated with landing lights. You might want to take another look and stop the footage when the plane comes in to view prior to impact. It was an awful event. May God rest their souls.

No black box on this airplane... Only Large commercial aircraft and some smaller commercial, corporate, and private aircraft are required by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to be equipped with two "black boxes" that record information about a flight. In the case of an aircraft incident or accident, investigators use the data from the black boxes to reconstruct the events leading to the event......One of the black boxes, the cockpit voices recorder(CVR), records radio transmissions and sounds in the cockpit while the other, the flight data recorder (FDR), monitors parameters such as altitude, airspeed, and heading. The CVR records the flight crew's voices, as well as other sounds inside the cockpit using microphones usually located in the overhead instrument panel between the two pilots and in the headsets of the pilots.......Sound of interest to an investigator include engine noise, stall warnings, landing gear extension and retraction, and other recognizable clicks and pops. Communications with Air Traffic Control (ATC) and conversations between the pilots and cabin crew are also recorded by the CVR. I hope this helps understand the application of Black Box and where is needed .

Dr. Shawn Pruchnicki, a former plane accident investigator who is now a professor at Ohio State University’s Center for Aviation Studies, points out the glow on the plane as it comes down and the smoke trail shows the plane was on fire in the air. He also said the angle of the plane means it was not in control.
@wjatube
@wjatube Жыл бұрын
That's debatable and a professor used to know better than to speak that soon. The camera, resolution, distance and lighting could've easily provided that false assumption. An investigator would also know that a fire on board doesn't cause an immediate lack of communication, 90 degree pitch to the ground. The logical assumption is something happened when speed was lowered, flaps and gear were prepping for landing. Given atmospheric conditions on that morning- icing seems most logical. Or we can go with the highly improbable timing that a fire broke out at the exact moment the plane was ready to land. Ugh, even typing that disappoints as our academic minds have really fallen. I say this as lifelong Buckeye living in Columbus.

@@pauleyplay The reason I would like to know is that use of the autopilot has proved a critical factor in icing incidents/accidents. Ideally, in anything more than light/intermittent icing, the A/P should not be engaged as it disguises deteriorating handling characteristics developing due to icing on critical components. Typically, when the crew finally decide to disengage the A/P they discover major problems, in the worst cases, the autopilot will give up on attempting to control the aircraft, disengaging itself and the aircraft will very likely be out of control.
