It was the first really 'big' night series GF, crowd was 50K, a lot bigger than any before it, and the crowd figure wasn't beaten until 1993 when it had morphed into the AFL pre-season comp.

Interesting with just a minute Collingwood just kept attacking. In modern day football teams would lock it down. They style was a lot more attacking back then.

Why didn't this sort of pre-game warm-up routine catch on? Would love to see this in every match nowadays, assuming we can trust people to keep footballs off the field during a match.

To be honest i thought i heard something resembling the siren just as Blight was playing on, not that Magpie fans are over it
@darrenmiles-morland8038
@darrenmiles-morland8038 9 сағат бұрын
I'm pretty certain that I heard the siren sound at about that moment too. Unfortunately the umpires didn't, and the match isn't officially over until the umpires have heard it and then acknowledge that they've heard it. Strangely enough I didn't notice any of the Collingwood players protesting, and staunch Magpie supporter Lou Richards seemed to be taking things pretty well in the commentary box (even if he knew deep down that Bobby Skilton was right).

FWIW the correct time is 4:30. lap times were 65, 70, 66, 69.

We should bring this back. Players nowadays are much fitter. I doubt the course was 1609m if that guy ran 4.12. Likely closer to 1500m. Blicavs would have beaten that guy by half a lap and he was around 3.55 for a mile at his best. I was a 4.30 runner for 1500m as a decathlete and could have beaten any of those runners by 4+ meters over 100m. Would be good to celebrate the strong endurance guys in the AFL, rather than just the sprint race.
@timn4481
@timn4481 Күн бұрын
the winner ran 4:30. look at the time stamp and listen to the lap time callouts. 65-70s per lap...can Blicavs really run a 3:55?!..thats elite even in track circles... AND.. what makes u so sure that cos you were running a 4:45/50 mile pace, that u could beat any of these guys by 4m over 100?..most AFL players excelled at track and many could've been elite track athletes but chose AFL.

the final time cant be right...to do a 4 :12, the average lap time needs to be 63...but you can see that the first lap was 65, lap 2 was 70, lap 3 was 66...and the time stamp on the video was that it started at 3:38 and ended at 8:08. so its about a 4:30..still very decent but a long way off 4:12.
