Well that sounds nice and simple to learn.... Seriously, Joe's arrangements are just other worldly. The man's genius knew no bounds.

Anyone hearing echoes from the American Garage album in this solo? It's been a long time since I listened to it, maybe just my imagination? PS: there's something about that bend release coming out measure 53 that made me listen to it multiple times.

Watching this video is so healing… my 5th grade band teacher ( a white woman) attempted to discourage me to not choose the flute because she told my mother….culturally it can be difficult for folks with larger lips to play the flute… mind you my lips are actually smaller is size than Mr. James Moody… lol My teacher recommended the clarinet and my mother was like nope she is playing the flute. I was 2nd chair for a long time I constantly doubted myself to challenge first chair who was an outstanding flautist who began playing the flute earlier than I. I am grateful for my mother, and my determination to practice hard and have great intonation and dexterity.

This to me is still the absolute BEST example of musical communication. The zone they're in is so special they might as well be pickung some Chaos Emeralds. Holy shit. This is what I show people when I try to explain communication during recording

Nicest thing about Brecker in general, and this solo in particular, is that he does not fall into sax clichés -- always the unexpected.

I'm a big fan of Metheny. Especially when him and Lyle Mays were working together. San Lorenzo, is my favorite song from that era. I literally learned about Pat Metheny from hearing 'Last Train Home' as the ending theme for Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Part 3 lol. Blew my mind even more when they used Jodeci's 'Freakin You' as the ending theme for Part 5. 🤣

To my ears, Julian is implementing other genres in a clever, and seamless way. A touch of Brazilian (I hear Bola Sete) a wink of tango, and he gave us something that became uniquely his own. Bravo!

Nice job on the transcription! I recall Pat giving an interview years ago where he stated he always tried to stay slightly ahead of the beat on live performances, which makes this type of transcription even more impressive.

Call me a hater but this music felt like it had so much potential to be funky and nasty but it kinda just devolves into noise. Maybe I don't get jazz

Are you French Canadian? I hear a lot of that out of your accent. Although I am not a musician I have listened to a lot of sax music in my time and Michael Brecker plays with a lot of passion. You will find a lot of artist around that time, the 90s also played well. Another artist that performs well with the instrument as well as through expressions is Candy Dulfer.

Song was written by Dave for his wife Iola, and she wrote the lyrics. That's the most important part. But I have never heard any version of this song with lyrics (vocals) and don't know whether such version even exists? I presume Paul most likely knew the lyrics, and it is quite possible he was referring to lyrics in his playing - quite natural for the saxophone. For other version of this songs, I'm not so sure; Miles Davis on this song sounds as he was reading weather forecast for North Africa and NY stock report at the same time.

If you don't now Gene Ammons, it is time to listen to him. To make a two tenor quintet with Sonny Stitt needs to be a great musician. But he is far to be the only guys who make "perfect solo". And this solo is a pure "bop" solo, with only "Bird" vocabulary.

god damn, music is such a beautiful thing. it connects us in ways that no other medium can. not even close.
