Seeing that SARS-COV2 is so infectious in humans it is not too difficult to imagine that it might also be very infectious in bats too. Isn't it a surprise that no virus closer than 96% has been found? (I'm a complete layperson)

I'm following economics in China, and one of the channels I watch was one of the earliest to note the rise of Covid-19. Today, Jan. 4th, he talked about others reporting on full emergency rooms due to respiratory infections affecting a higher than usual number of patients. He warned against being overly concerned at this point, but I was wondering if you had heard anything?

38:00 I see there's a company on the web called Altruan. Current price for these 4 in 1 tests are $1.57. The tests in stock don't have an expiration date until August 2026 (good for next winter as well). They ship to the US via DHL. Shipping is $30 for my area of the country (East Coast). 3-4 days for delivery For $50 I could have 20 tests at my door by the end of the week. For $100 you could get 64 tests. Enough to have 40 people gather relatively safely for an event and have leftovers to serial test vulnerable people so they could seek immediate treatment with paxlovid or tamiflu if something was missed. Attempting the same coverage for that event in the US would cost upwards of $800 and wouldn't have any screening for RSV. Anyone have any experience with that company?

Can any of the smart commenters remind me why we can keep testing positive on rat long after we are recovered. I know it's testing n protein of the virus; assuming it's because fragments of the nucleocapsid remain long after you've cleared active virus. Is that correct?
@patriciagiles583316 сағат бұрын
The RAT test can continue to pick up non infectious viral protein after the virulent viral phase is over. My sources say a positive RAT test isn't valid for testing for transmissability beyond 5 days post symptom onset. In "spot" testing for an asymptomatic infection, it depends on a few factors, but in general if you test positive in the absence of symptoms, treat it as a true positive result and take social distancing precautions. For testing after a suspected or confirmed COVID exposure, treat the exposure date as day zero. If symptomatic do test right away. If asymptomatic, wait 2 or 3 days before taking the RAT. Continue to test up to day 10.
@vanessanaylon8 сағат бұрын
I would recommend that person take a PCR test to check on this. If the PCR is positive, they may be experiencing viral persistence. Also make sure they are not eating or drinking before taking the test as some acids can produce a positive.

First time I turned TWIV off early. 15 minutes and hearing downplaying of the seriousness of the avian influenza rapid spread in bovines. The surviving cows are already showing average decrease in milk production by about 20%. Imagining what we'll learn over next year since this only started happening around March 2023. I have sheep. I grew up on horses and raising cattle. This situation risks breaking our food system more and the farmers and farm workers caring for sick herds and getting "mild" avian influenza potentially at the same time they could have coinfection with "normal" flu. .. whew. Hope I'm wrong. Farmers losing money, consumers paying more, taxpayers paying more for farmer support for every killed poultry and expenses for government and public health issues.

I just donated to MicrobeTV to support your great presentations. I encourage others to donate to MicrobeTV as well! Thanks also to Daniel for sharing his experience meeting Jimmy Carter at the Museum of Natural History and the successes in cutting Guinea worm human cases down from 3.5 million to fewer than 10 human cases this year. How about the Carter Center’s success with river blindness? Isn’t it true that Carter got Merck to donate 5 billion pills of Mectizan? And has eliminated river blindness from 4 Latin American nations? Columbia, Ecuador, Guatemala, and Mexico? I really admire President Carter for making that happen! He was a President who truly cared about the greater good. And put in solar panels way ahead of his time! Sadly Reagan didn’t get it and ripped out the solar panels, but we are back on track and are now installing wind turbines offshore in the United States as the UK, Germany, and the Netherlands have shown can work very successfully!

Still can get infected and get sick. The H is for hemagglutinin, a protein on the surface of the virus that assists in viral entry. You do have exposure to the h5, h1 subgroups, it doesn't mean you have specific antibodies to whatever is floating out there. Hopefully through somatic hypermutation, you have developed b cells and memory close enough to fight whatever you encounter to limit disease. Or you are lucky enough to have t-cells close enough to deal with the viruses themselves.

No. The end of the program tells you where to send questions. Though you might get suggestions from other viewers. Typically some are quite educated on the subject. Just remember, it's not medical advice. Not even the hosts. They don't know your medical history or issues. So it is just that, "advice". Always in the end seek local medical assistance.

A RCT for masking is non scientific. The results depend on the masks being worn correctly all the time. Physics tells you whether they work or not. It's not like "did to take your pill everyday for a week"!!! And results from places like Addenbrooke's Hospital are pretty impressive.

I don't really understand why you guys are so meh about masks. I went to our quaternary hospital today to pick up a prescription, and I was the only person there in an N95. I saw one KN95 and a few surgical masks, but otherwise it was just people everywhere milling around, coughing, and you know all these things that you don't want are there in the hospital. The mask costs less than a dollar. It's not lined on the inside with spikes. Why would you not just tell people: put it on, it won't kill you, it could save your winter from being miserable or worse?

I’m pretty sure I got Covid while unmasked to drink water in a medical office building attached to a hospital. Otherwise, I’ve masked and have avoided illness. The effort involved isn’t the big deal that many make it out to be. A nurse treating a loved one had to be reminded to don a mask-in a cancer hospital, mind you.

Evidence based medicine has not shown mass masking to be effective especially when worn for long periods of time, multiple use of same masks, improper doffing and donning, etc. Masks also can cause harm to some people, there are conditions, such as allergies, urticaria, psychological disorders, etc that were aggravated by long term masking. You have the freedom to mask, so before you judge others take some time to think they may have their reasons to not mask. I work in a long term care facility and the majority of our residents voted to not have mandatory masking as the psychological effect on them of not being able to see their caregivers faces was unbearable. I completely understand why there is a meh about masks, it’s because there is a willingness to change one’s mind as the evidence develops.

As an elderly senior I make my caregiver stay home ten days if they have had a positive Covid test. It's hard on her but safer for me. Caregivers are responsible for their behavior around the vulnerable people they help, and they should not be cavalier about infecting their elderly clients. For that reason, the government and private agencies that pay caregivers or send them out to prospective care recipients should provide extra paid sick leave for caregivers so they do not suffer economic harm because of necessarily prolonged time off work due to having Covid.
