I did an audiobook recording and basic montage with my phone, and yes it took months (I did 1 chapter/week, so 36 weeks in total), but I could see my improvement at the end compared to the first chapters, a lot less mess ups to cut, but yeah, as you said, recording an audiobook takes time and dedication.

I am very interested in becoming a voiceover person for children's books. I am electric when it comes to silly voices . I am one who walks around my house speaking outloud excitedly because it helps my everyday be void of the boring stuff. It adds joy to my day. I love speaking on a microphone and love to speak to young children in my family or whoever is around in all types of voices. I love to sing, but I am not that talented when it comes to singing. It's just fun and brings happiness to my life when I need it the most. Here the thing...I live in Southwest Arkansas/Northeast Texas onn the Texas /Arkansas border in a twin city. My southern accent is not subtle. When speaking to people in other cities or states, I always hear the surprise on the other end of the phone. It's kind of the same thing when you are spaking with someone on the phone and you are smiling while dloing so. It makes a difference in how your voice comes across ot the other person. I am told how "neat" my voice sounds due to my strong accent or how enjoyable it is to hear my spoken words. I am not overly impressed by this accent because I am the one speaking. I am very used to the way I sound, of course! Is there a niche for such an accent? And, if not...is there a way I can work on my sound? I feel like if I can change my voice to sound like an animal or a child, etc. then, surely I can learn to do a lot more with my voice. What is your take on this? I would love to hear it. Thank You!

You could easily have been discussing the journey of becoming an educator in this video. So many people think you just walk in and "teach." WRONG. As if! As a teacher for nearly 25 years before losing my job, I thought it might be fun and genuinely satisfying to narrate children's books part time. I LOVED reading out loud to my students and always made an effort to use the tone, inflection, and affect of the characters while reading stories to help make them come alive. It mattered to them and it mattered to me. But they could "see" me doing the reading. With book narration, it's an entirely different challenge because your voice is there with no image. So essentially your voice embodies the character for your listeners in its entirety. That's no small feat. I also appreciate you sharing that it's a marathon, not a sprint. I'm just starting to learn about narration and had no idea the level of technical prowess involved. It's a bit intimidating. But I'm going to continue watching your videos and explore the possibility of taking on this challenge, armed with the knowledge that - as with every pursuit in life - mastery takes time and there is absolutely no such thing as a free ride. Thanks so much for this reality check.

Hi Angela, I took a 12 week VO course here in Canada, (some past training as well) some on going private coaching, completed my animation demo, and still working on putting a commercial demo together. I just came across your channel, and I am super interested in audio book narration. I have a problem. My financial situation is not great, and I am living in the same house as my 91 year old mother ( I am her caregiver) This house is like a tin box, and she has her tv on ALL DAY. I am not sure how to create a soundproof space on the cheap to record auditions, let alone finding work in this field. Can you direct me anywhere for some kind of soundproofing? I also took a course in Audacity, (I have a good mic, boom arm, and a Scarlet Solo interface,) which I am still struggling with (noise floor etc...) There is so much more to this than I initially thought. Thanks for your amazing information!!

Great video. Just a idea that might make your editing faster. Can't you just take the Room Tone, put it on a separate track? That way, it will cover all those gaps. If not, no worries.
@VoiceOverAngela4 күн бұрын
@ehdforlife you could do that for sure. However you'd like your process to flow. There may be sections of your audio where louder noise is present, the separate track may just enhance the noise instead of replace it with lower noise/ room tone.

My focus for 2025 is to devote time daily to learning and growing in voice over. This will include becoming more comfortable and competent with Audacity and also honing voice techniques that will make me more marketable and versatile. Another focus will be to complete my Fiverr and ACX profiles and start to gain experience on both sites and do work that clients really like. :) Scary, but very exciting!

I am not new to audio editing as a former musician, DJ, audio/video broadcaster with web radio stations, and VO remixer for the last 30 years. I am now going public with my audio editing service, have been digging into new technical information, and it was suggested that I also look into ACX editing and requirements. Your video was a good detailed review for me understand what type of content I should expect to receive from narrators before starting to work on their tracks so I can verify if it meets the ACX content and file standards before cleaning up and editing their work so there is no unnecessary rework. Thank you for the detailed breakdown.
