Great video. Very good instructional format. Have a new Garmin watch so I appreciate the content. Going off subject a little but I am wondering what brand of trousers and jacket you are wearing in this video.

Brilliant video, very informative and absolutely love your drone work! Fantastic parallax on your panning shots. Just got a Tactix 7 Amoled and looking forward to using it in the beautiful Cambrian Mountains tomorrow. Thank you 👍

Really like that Columbia jacket, have had a rab downpour plus which has the pit zips, they make a huge difference, the colour is good as well.

I own quite a few jackets but its the one i keep going back to. The weight, fit, features and comfort make it the perfect choice.

The sock trick 😂 great stuff! I’m a big guy with blessed leg muscles (shame the rest of me doesn’t match) so struggled to find decent walking trousers that go over my thighs, RAB tights have sorted me right out, just wear a pair of comfortable shorts over the top… I love your waterproof coat, I have a gortex coat that I bought just before I saw some videos talking about gor isn’t what it used to be and other materials are now just as good, if not better… and merino wool all the way, bought some merino socks this spring which are game changers!
@ohwhataknightКүн бұрын
I've also struggled with finding trousers to fit my disproportionate legs (I have got small waist, large thighs, tiny calves). The Montane tenacity pants fit really well and are super stretchy, i would highly recommend them. With Goretex Jackets you are paying a premium for the name, which isn't all what its hyped up to be. The Columbia jackets has its own in house technology which has done a good job so far.
@gregcooper2719Күн бұрын
@ I’m deffo done with the gortex hype, my current waterproof is nowhere near as good as a waterproof coat I had 15 years ago, and at half price it was the same price as the RRP of your Columbia! Will check out those trousers too! Have a great new year

When it comes to base/mid layers & a hat, I swear by Marino/alpaca. It’s way better at regulating the body temperature when you have to put on the plastic bag(synthetic jacket).

Yeah I'have fully switched to merino, even in summer.

I was thinking chris, could you do a video next year showing how you prepare for day climbs of one or more peaks and what you wear, rucksack size, what you take and how you prepare prior to the climb? A video this week on another channel showed a guy injured on his own after climbing crib Goch for the first time and was wearing jeans and trainers and his phone had died but was luckily found by other climbers who called mountain rescue. I carry a stratos 24 at 8kg with everything in it much to the amusement of other climbers but you never know. I did scafell pike a few years ago fully kitted up with people going up in t shirts and it was 7 degrees at the bottom. Minus 13 degrees wind chill at the top, a 20 degree change. When I got back down, a couple asked me how to get out of the car park to start the climb, totally unprepared it's scary. I think it would be a great video for newbies and to prepare them for what they're about to do. I also use mountain forecast (from advice from another of your videos in the past) to know the conditions days before I climb and I've only done a few Thanks chris. 👍

A great idea, i will add it to the list of videos to make in 2025! Its one of the issues with the rise in popularity of hiking, people are often vasty under prepared and unaware of what conditions are like in winter. Which is worrying and scary. If i see someone who i clearly under prepared, whos heading up a mountain in winter I will often politely voice my concerns. Good to hear you are carrying all the right kit. I always say, its better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it. Experienced hikers will never judge you for carrying too much kit, especially in the colder months of the year.

Chris, do you change what boots you wear depending on weather/terrain? Like what do you wear for lake district vs what you wear for winter hikes?
@ohwhataknightКүн бұрын
Hey Mike, I do! I plan on doing a video on that soon. Generally I wear trail runners (Columbia Montrail Trinity AGii) in the warmer months of the year or when i think the weather and ground is going to be dry. I will wear waterproof mid cut shoes (Adidas Freehiker 2 GTX) when the weather gets wetter and colder and the ground is much more saturated. Then I have a pair of cold weather waterproof boots for snowy conditions in Winter (Columbia Facet 75 Equinox). All three are on the hiking gear page of my website: ohwhataknight.co.uk/my-hiking-gear

Brilliant video once again, good to know I've got the right kit for my mountain hikes from advice you've given in past videos. Need to get the pants as I've always worn cotton so I'll be looking out for some merino ones now. Wishing you and all your subscribers a merry Christmas and a happy new year and here's to many climbs in 2025. 👍

Thank you. Cotton boxers are terrible in winter. I mostly wear Synthetic boxers shorts, with UnderArmour Performance Tec 6" Boxerjock being a great option.

@ohwhataknight went on the EDZ website straight after watching your video and bought a load of merino items, baselayer, boxers, socks,neck gaiter so that'll be here soon hopefully. Thanks again chris 👏

Interesting vid. Here’s a question for all the Fenix owners. Has anyone suffered from the back sensor screen on their Fenix developing micro cracks? The issue is meant to be related to Deet affecting the plastic screen on the back of the watch. After informing Garmin they were not giving anything away as to how many instances they have had reported. Mine is a Fenix 5.

Brilliant video, really enjoyed it of a Munro that I haven't done. Very good decisions made by all, given the conditions and abilities. Micros spike were a bit questionable and agree that B2 a must. Not sure your boots were B2 compatible though, I my be wrong. Just as an aside, what camper have you got? Looking forward to watching more of your wee trip out.

Great video, I’ve always meant to do that route, somehow 20 years has passed 🤣 Did I see 2 guys in approach shoes? I see quite a few people up high ( in winter) in them nowadays. My ankles have always loved 3 or 4 season boots in winter- I would recommend stiff boots for remote munros- theirs nothing like finding a whole slope of rock hard neve that you need to traverse to keep you honest!

I’d have spare batteries. Mitts rather than one of the pairs gloves. Find Deuter rucksacks really heavy too.
@ohwhataknight7 күн бұрын
It would be great if you could share more opinions on other gear alongside what you would suggest I eat on the hike? The headtorch is rechargeable and doesn't use batteries, so they would be pointless (hence the powerbank). I do think Mitts are a great suggestion and would be a great addition to my kit, however I dont own a pair so the winter specific gloves were the next best thing.

Great video Chris and as mentioned googles are a must in winter. I always carry a helmet in winter in the rucksack and use it if I feel it is necessary. A slip in summer and a slip in winter on the same route can have very different outcome. Cheers Dave
@ohwhataknight7 күн бұрын
Very wise words indeed. I never though about a helmet for slips and falls, more for stopping debris from above. Something to consider in the future.

I remember the first & only time I did An Teallach in winter conditions & it’s more than just a winter hill walk It’s very committing & I would only advise people with winter experience/scrambling to attempt it Also worth taking two headtorches I think that’s the Petzl Swift Rl you’ve got & someone I know had theirs just die without warning
@ohwhataknight7 күн бұрын
Wise words. The Petzl Swift RL is rechargeable by USB-C, hence why I only brought one. I also have a watch with an LED flashlight (not the same level but it will do a job as a backup alongside my phone)

Epic day and great video. Makes me want to come for a visit. I do want to sound a note of caution, though. I hike in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, which are notorious for their high winds and sudden changes in weather conditions. Earlier this year, we lost a super-experienced hiker, Chris Roma--you can google accounts of his story. His story was pretty extreme, but I have thought a lot about the incident, and I now ask myself more what-if questions. What if there's a snow squall (or fog) that wipes out all visibility, especially with only a headlamp? What if I were forced to hunker down? You and your mates are obviously highly skilled, know your mountains and your weather, and are fully able to assess possible risks. All I know is that the older I get, the more I think about the border between Type 2 fun and Type 3 fun. In case you're wondering, Type 3 = "never again." P.S.: Only recently did I learn from real-life accounts that after you push the Garmin button it takes search-and-rescue a MINIMUM of 3 hours during daylight hours, and much longer at night or if the whether is awful (which of course is when you need them).
