Great and Helpful Video! I'm about to release my first COVER on Landr and I'm just a bit confused what to put where it says Lyricist. Would that be the original Lyricists or myself as I am the one singing 100% of the vocals on the cover? However, as I did not write the Lyrics, I am not sure what to do. In the video, it didn't specifically say what to put there if it was a cover.

I just started into this industry last year after being a pianist since a kid and then later needing to find some other income. The whole modern music industry seems broken. There's a huge disconnect between creators and the companies that distribute (and later don't pay what we "see" famous artists lifestyles like). It has been difficult to know the proper way to reach any level of success. i.e. My track Missing Me blew up within a month with streams on a distributor who kept rejecting my monetization requests yet they were making my fanbase watch their ads which THEY got paid for. I had to write a letter to the company, then start releasing with another company for them to see the value from my fanbase in the future with me for them to finally agree to monetize the track 7 months after all the confusion and desire to give up I went through. I wish their was a simple, basic, free way new artists could learn because their is so much misinformation and Ai may give good ideas to you as an artist but it's ideas are only as good as what we humans feed the machine with or program it to go out and learn the information on it's own. smh soundcloud

Just seen this video, nice one! A big issue is that there aren't many people in the industry who are incentivised to expose this. The fake agencies make a much bigger margin by getting the fake streams rather than real streams plus get the artist coming back for more as the streams will be higher than organic. Spotify doesn't care as they just pay out a proportion of ad and subscription revenue anyway. And the major labels don't care because again, it doesn't impact their artist's revenue. We even received cease and desist letters from agencies because we would tell an artist that their streams from South America and Indonesian are questionable. So the agency threatened us with legal action. Ironically, a few weeks later one of the artists in question got 50,000 streams removed by Spotify because they were fake. The only thing that gives us hope is that distributors are now getting fined by Spotify for artificial streams which they are passing on to the artist. We spoke to a distributor who told us that it's not just about seeing a steady follower growth on the playlist anymore, there are bot location hotspots as well as more detailed stats they can look in to such as the skip rate. Believe it or not if a skip rate is too low it can indicate artificial streams as realistically a skip rate should be high for a new artist that people haven't heard of. They told us that these are the patterns they've been able to identify as artists get their tracks taken down and almost always have one of these indicators.

$5/day? Most artists can't afford that or aren't willing to pay it. That's $1825/yr they'll never get back (unless they get VERY lucky). But back to the main topic: It's only going to get worse, as bots will get smarter with the increasing capabilities of AI, and artists will always get the shortest end of the stick. Always. Nothing will change until ARTISTS put their feet down and stop people from ripping them off by taking control. It's YOUR music and you don't have to give it away, however artists continue to do just that. And THEY are giving it away; nobody else. This is coming from a longtime artist, engineer & producer AND software engineer with 45 years experience. I believe I have the solution to this never ending problem, however, again, it starts with the artists taking control and not falling for all of the traps set out for them. 90%+ of artist will not be willing to take that leap due to their nature. But until they do, the madness will just get worse. Guaranteed. Everything is driven by money and these big corporations/platforms don't give a flying f*ck about you. They are in it for themselves.
@IndieMusicAcademy6 күн бұрын
Well said!
@thesiresolo49905 күн бұрын
Interesting! What is your proposed solution?
@innofitself3 күн бұрын
@thesiresolo4990 It's a collection of a number of different methodologies including a new artist-centric platform, which would take a team of skilled software engineers with competent leadership. That said, artists could do everything on their own right now, however it would be a lot more work for them. But it all centers around a very simple idea that the artists themselves must agree to and adhere to. Otherwise it won't work. And again, most artists would not concede as they would worry that they would not be heard, for example, which is a fallacy in itself because they already are not being heard. All told, the artists need to be in full control, and they actually have that power right now - they will just historically fall into the age old traps they have always fallen into, like the promise of "making their music available for the world to hear." If you're one of the 99%+ of artists who have worked to somehow make this a reality, you know it's actually a fantasy and doesn't ever happen. Sure, it does happen to a select few, but this solution's real focus is re-valuing music, and yes, the consumer will in fact have to pay more than they currently are. There is no way around the problem until they do. That said, it will not be a problem for them if they know they are getting value for their monetary contributions, while supporting their favorite artists. BTW, I've been formulating this idea since the advent of Napster, and could easily write a book about it. The biggest barrier is convincing artists to actually take control, but it would be very difficult to get them on board, because of fear pretty much, even though their music would be completely in their control.

I had a release get taken down for botted streams in the middle of a dual Showcase/Discovery Mode campaign...the bot problem is 100% Spotify's fault for allowing the ecosystem that it thrives on to exist, and frankly it isn't really in Spotify's interests to get rid of fake profiles/bots when the number of "users" drives both the ad revenue, and the market share for venture capital investment. One thing is for sure, as long as the free tier exists, this is going to be a problem for everybody but Spotify. They aren't running out of cheap content any time soon, tracks under 1000 streams cost them nothing, and by promoting the organic and AI artist profiles Spotify actually owns outright, they have full control over their payouts by being able to control how much the royalty pool is diluted with content that Spotify never has to pay any royalties on.

Good info! If you copyright through CDBABY OR DISTRO KID, is that covering all bases? I have applied for copyright through the government office many years ago and recently have been releasing singles and albums on CD Baby. I make a tiny amount $$, but always have uncertainties about the copyright process. This video was helpful. Will probably never get enough royalties to offset music equipment costs, but have a lot of enjoyment along the way😂 KZbin @tman1954

I think that's definitely the attitude of traditional labels, managers, and industry heads... Thankfully, with social media leveling the playing field of attention distribution, you can reach thousands (even millions) through a viral post. You'll have to plan out the right type of post, but it technically requires zero funding to reach all your fans in today's social economy.
@MajorMoment7 күн бұрын
@ it’s an equivalent of winning a lottery, and leaving things up to chance is not a marketing strategy. if after 1000+ posts not a single one of them got an algorithmic push strong enough to be considered even micro viral, how is it leveling the playing field for me? it’s not. so what do I do? keep hoping for a lucky break or get in the car and do some food deliveries to acquire funding?
@IndieMusicAcademy4 күн бұрын
I think I have figured out a way for artists to go viral. Not every time but probably one in every 15-20 posts. Not millions of views but five figures at least. I don’t talk about it on the channel because it needs more testing. I’m going to be spending a lot of time this year trying it out on my own account. If you think I should share about my tests let me know.
