I must have DiveBlob!! It reminds me so much of a computer game I used to play when I was a kid but I can't remember the name of the game since it's been so long.

Sortof, some of the characters change some logic on how the stages work.
THIS LOOKS AWESOME. I am a game dev (learning) who has been trying to make a game in the style of a gameboy game and this looks very impressive. Built-in rumble is an awesome touch.

This is probably about to be the first kickstarter project i ever support. This is so neat! I'm actually curious how you got around to making the carts, but of course you don't need to share your magic publicly! I just love the idea of this and the box as well. Regardless, i love this little game. It does everything I loved from old gameboy games as well as does what I love about a long-running roguelite. Really captures the retro feel.
@maithonis3 ай бұрын
Thanks for the really nice comments! Basically, I looked for suppliers on all the individual parts and then sourced just a few for prototyping purposes. The Game Boy modding scene is huge and so a lot of this stuff has gotten a lot easier to source. I'd say sourcing the box/manual/labels are probably the more challenging parts. There was a ton of back and forth with the labels to get it looking perfect so that was tricky. As far as the PCB, anyone can buy them from insidegadgets and then buy a ROM dumper (which he also sells). There's other PCB sellers too that offer other configurations also. I went with them because I know he uses high quality parts, something you wouldn't get with re-writing a chinese bootleg. He's got many different cart configurations so ideally you want to get the cheapest one that will fit your game and features you want (ie: rumble/fram/sram/rom-size). One thing I wish I could have done was had my own Injection moulded cartridge shell. I'm not sure how bigger publishers are doing that, but that would have been really cool for us! I play all sorts of games and I've been developing for over a decade so I've gotten pretty good at knowing what I chew off myself. A finished game is better then no game. I know DiveBlob isn't a super deep RPG like Pokemon with vast artwork and a sprawling world. But, if people can pick it up and play it for a few minutes here and there like they would Puzzle Bobble or Tetris, then I'm happy. I also like arcade-style games for their share-ability (which handhelds are great for). It's much easier to get your friend to play a quick game of Tetris rather then a quick game of Zelda links awakening.

Oh nice! The other characters and music sound fantastic. I backed this recently and you should too!
@maithonis3 ай бұрын
Hey, I'm glad you like the music! One cool thing we did was with one of the music channels (Ch2) will duck when SFX plays like the spring platform "boing" or the TNT "zap". Our composer made sure not to use ch 2 for any critical melody notes but the channel is still heavily in use for filling out chords and stuff. With many GB games you can tell that the SFX clashes with the music so we were very mindful of this. You do hear some SFX getting interrupted during the JUMPEE gameplay but that's because I made the jump have a SFX and not because the music is fighting with the SFX. Maybe I should remove her jump SFX. Hmmm lol.

@@maithonis That is an amazing insight into the development for GB games. I am fascinated with these behind the scenes takes. Not sure if you know him by Timbo who made Bubble Frog was the first campaign I backed last year for a GB game. He even has a cool tool to bring GB games to Windows. Interesting. Which song exactly? I love what our composer came up with. You can only hear one song (Shinee's) in the trailer but the demo has 2 others (main menu and Blobee's). Our composer has even made music for Runescape/OSRS!
@AugustRenders3 ай бұрын
@@maithonis I was referring mainly to the music at 0:44. It reminded me of this track from the Atari Tetris arcade game: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bpaTYpZvjthlhbc&ab_channel=Otouto72 I think it's the tempo that made me think of that. Nothing to be worried or ashamed about. There will always be similarities with other work, no matter what you do.
@maithonis3 ай бұрын
@@AugustRenders Oh believe me I'm well aware of that haha! It's like that meme where the kid has a song he's showing the dad, but the dad puts on the song that sounds similar to it that he grew up with, and then grandpa walks in and he's got his version of the song from like the 1940s that's also the same. Basically any pop song is a dusted off song from history. Intentional or not! But in this case I'm not sure I'm hearing what you're hearing. Just FYI I'm not the composer but I'm very happy with our music. You can check out the Kickstarter to learn more about him! I do know that with one of the songs that's not in the trailer, there is a bit of a nod to another game's melody, but I doubt anyone will ever notice it.

The authentic is off because the Game Boy Color cartridges were not compatible with normal game boys if you wanted a game that was backwards compatible with old game boys you need the colored cartridges. Like the black cartridges were showing colors for the Game Boy Color but can be played on a normal Game Boy.

Hey, you're 100% right. I actually ran a few polls though and many preferred the blue cartridge. On the bright side the shell is not an original GBC cartridge mold it's a bit different to allow it to function with an original DMG.
