I agree, I do not like these paints much. They're not for controlled paintings and move too much. They look very splotchy and inky in my sketchbook... I think these paints are best for people who do loose paintings like landscapes and large areas to cover.

Sorry lady! I believe, your expectations from this book or from artist completely wrong! She didn't promise to share or reveal every detail she achieved during her 4 decades experience in any book created! As an artist,she shared what she loved what she wanted! Stop expecting everything ready to serve to you in life first! Second;build up your knowledge about art before holding brushes! Third; if you have enough knowledge about how to read pictures you don't need some one explain to you prosses. Please! DO YOUR HOMEWORK BEFORE CRITICIZING SOME ONE WAY WAY AHEAD OF YOU! This is just advice from elderly art lover old man!

Wow, you must be having a bad week--that is a very angry rambling comment for an old book review video! Anyway, this book IS about teaching art, so I reviewed it as such. Many books of the same size have excellently covered many artists decades worth of complex techniques in one volume. Several such books have been reviewed on my channel. And actually, I have decades worth of advanced drawing and painting technique experience myself in many mediums, so I think you should have done your homework and looked at my other videos or artwork. 'Nuff said, not saying anything more to you.

@@HajraMeeks You don't need to be upset, it was just opinion. I saw many talented people claiming themselves as an " Artist " without knowing how to read a piece of artwork! What they say, " Picture hold thousands words if we can read them " You don't have to respond, again it was just my opinion ! Wishing you well!

LOL...it's because I've been very ill with chronic health issues, and also because YT and much of YT 's audience didn't really care for my info-dense videos. People don't really care about good teaching and learning anymore--a few wonderful people like you, but not enough to make a living on YT (and by extention Patreon, Skillshare, etc). I do plan to get back onto YT once my health ever shapes up (still struggling with Hypermobility Disorder complications), but I will be posting as a public service or personal art journey, and rely on other venues for income. Thanks so much for your interest and I wish you all the best in your own epic art adventures, h

Thank you for your content. 🙏 What brand of proportional divider do you have? Would you recommend the plastic ones, or should I stick with the brass or aluminum ones? Thanks.
@HajraMeeks
@HajraMeeks 5 ай бұрын
Mine is by Alvin, I believe. Depends on how much you use it--you could also use a ruler or metal compass (or even your pencil or finger) for visual measuring marks (see my other videos on prop divider and how to draw anything methods kzbin.info/www/bejne/sGWzgWSIitCqm5Y ). I haven't used dividers as much I thought as I end up just using my pencil or something faster, but the metal Alvin prop divider I have is a beautiful tool to own and use. Plastic or metal will also depend on how large you draw or paint. As I often paint quite small, the finer metal tips are my preference.

That's so exciting! Glad to provide some info and inspiration on your journey! My favorite mediums are gouache, watercolor, and ink. I've found I can do every style possible with these three. (In contrast, I found oil and acrylic too allergy-inducing and with longer setup and clean up, and found that "dry" mediums like pencil & pastel were too slow and hard on hand muscles.) You'll explore and find out which ones work the best for you. Good luck and have fun!

Thank you....this video was a scientists dream comparison of three art mediums I'm interested in. Having had to choose between a science or art path in school, I left painting behind in 1992! Due to health I've had to break from the world of research and academia, and I'm desperate to learn about how paints have changed and what's possible. I loved the fact based information, brief explanations of terms and techniques and lack of flowery waffle. Art and science go so well together, it's a shame so few see the overlap and potential for beautiful tables 😂. My ADHD brain also loves the fast paced talking and handwritten comparison....keyboards make information retention so much harder. I will subscribe based on this video alone.

I am a Schmincke girl. mainly because I started with them and they are most easily available where I live, but recently I started to dabble into other paints. if I want reliable results I still like to work with Schmincke (though I had good reliable results with Roman Szmal and White nights), but often I also want to be a bit surprised by the paints and kinda "problem solve" towards a good painting. that's why I like picking limited palettes but also why I also use handmade paints and try out other brands like Qor and Daniel Smith. I find it fun that the same pigment can look different with different brands and I like the Qor for doing more unexpected things. I find Schmincke is very smooth which is good for more conventional works...it's a work horse and I know what to expect, especially if I go for well-known colours, though the more granulating ones do introduce a little pinch of adventure into the painting process. haha I only recently got a Qor set. It's the portrait set. They are a bit more difficult to control. Like you said, I think they were originally formulated to work for bigger paintings, where the higher rate of the pigment spread is a feature not a bug. working with them on smaller portraits (roughly palm-sized) is a bit more tricky but I do like how vibrant they are. they claim that Aquazol is more archival than Honey and Gum Arabic and that it influences the colours less by being clear instead of the mot yellowish tint that other binders have. I don't know... up 'til now I didn't notice a difference in tint. maybe you gotta wait 50 years for it to be apparent.

Hi back! My painting is solely transparent watercolor in this video, thanks for your kind comment. The paper is the common 140 lb Arches-the cold press looks thicker than hot press due to texture. (I don’t buy the thickee 300 lb as it drinks up too much paint, and the 90 lb is too thin and buckles too readily-the 140 lb is the goldilocks just right fit for me).

You're very welcome. it's not so easy to find realistic watercolor portrait books that go step-by-step. I had to mix and match from drawing, gouache, and watercolor technique books myself. Find digital or print versions of the older books by Andrew Loomis--still the best at teaching how to draw the face or figure in my opinion. You can also try Bull Maughan's head drawing book, which I reviewed way back here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fWaceXmml56DgbM. As for painting a realistic portrait in watercolor, I found that Susan Harrison Tustain, did a great video workshop with a watercolor portrait demo of her daughter, I think there's a preview here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pYOahJeVZ7CtgMk wishing you epic art adventures, hajra

I mostly came on here to figure out how to take off the black residue on the edges of the paper, after you take it off the block. Any tips/ tricks would be appreciated :)
@HajraMeeks
@HajraMeeks 10 ай бұрын
The black residue is the black glue on the profile of the block. You can shave it off with an exacto knife or sand it off with a sanding block. You can also cut off a sliver of the entire perimeter with an exacto knife or scissors if you want to go faster and don't mind cropping the paper a bit. I usually do the cutting as it's faster and less messy. Others I know also just mat over the edges for display so it's hidden without removal, so you can consider that if you plan on using a mat frame over the piece. Hope that helps!

@HajraMeeks
@HajraMeeks Жыл бұрын
This has happened a few times to me as well, and can happen with other varnishes, too. I’ve found that using a sand eraser very gently and brushing off on the varnish resistant bald spot seems to help make the surface more receptive to a coat of varnish if it’s oil or other surface issue which is keeping the varnish off those little bare spots. Be very careful not to rub too hard and lift much paint/medium, just enough to make the surface porous and receptive to a varnish topcoat. If it’s an uneven paper surface gravity issue, just tilt the artwork and reapply to the bare spots. Hope that helps!
