It is certainly possible to use waterproof ink in a fountain pen. I do it all the time. It has to be ink designed for fountain pens like De Atramentis Document ink or Rohrer & Klinger Sketch Inks.

That's nice to know, thanks for sharing! :) The fountain pen I had before specifically said never to use waterproof ink in it for some reason. WP fountain pen inks will be an interesting option to explore once my current inks are gone.

There are actually quite a few waterproof inks that are made to be safe with fountain pens .. deatramentis document inks, noodlers’ bulletproof inks, and quite a few others ... thanks so much for the reviews I love the lamy safari pen.. have been using it for s long time now with the Deatramentis document inks, and then I watercolor over the line work,, is wonderful

I love the Herbin Lie De The color for using like a watercolor paint itself. The dye separates in wet washes making a pretty rad multiple-color effect. It reminds me of a brown version of specialty paints like Daniel Smith Moonglow with the magic it can do. If you're into that sort of look, you might want to try dropping some color into a really wet pool of water :)

thanks for that input, Kimberly--I love water-soluble ink effects so will definitely try that out in a future demo, the color separations you mention sound yummy and perfect! :D

I'm so glad you got a Lamy Safari! I love my Extra Fine nib--works great for general inking and I love how delicate writing looks when using that pen. When it comes to the reed pen, I used those extensively when I was a teenager, and I found that by using thicker ink (like that kind that comes from a Japanese inkstone) and a light hand, you can get finer lines. Envying your Herbin inks--they look gorgeous! And wow your hand is STEAADDYYY when you use that liner brush. Impressive :D

Thanks so much, Amaya! Thanks so much for your own experience and input on the reed pen and LAMY, much appreciated. Inking by brush has been my main method of inking for some years so I hope I'd have a steady hand by now. XD Thanks for always being so sweet.

You can use waterproof ink in a fountain pen. The best is Platinum Carbon ink. They even have a matching pen. You can also buy the cheaper Platinum Preppy fountain pens and they have different sizes which go super fine! The black ones in that pen is waterproof also.

Nice comparison of tools! Pigment-based Platinum Carbon ink is waterproof and designed for fountain pens. I use and love the Platinum Carbon fountain pen with extra fine nib for writing and sketching. It has cartridges filled with their waterproof ink. I also have a Platinum Preppy pen with fine nib - the cartridges for that pen are filled with water-soluble ink. Each pen costs about $10. Platinum Carbon pen is higher quality than Preppy, but it's a desk pen, so not portable.

Thanks so much for letting me know, Sharon, great info to have here when I get black wp ink refills! How fine is your fine nib, may I ask? Finer than 0.5 mm?

@@HajraMeeks Platinum Preppy Fine is listed as 03 on jetpens.com. Extra Fine Platinum Carbon pen does not specify, but it is much finer than the 03 Platinum Preppy Fine (Preppy $4.00 on Jet Pens, $12 for Platinum Carbon).

Jake from Rasa: I think I’ll have to get a glass dip pen now! Great advice about the damaged paper causing bleeds. I love to use my fountain pen with a wet in wet effect, especially in the iris of an eye, then clean up the edge after it dries. Another great tutorial, thank you!

Love the comparisons of all the inking tools! As I think other commenters have mentioned, there are many waterproof inks for fountain pens. Otherwise, they wouldn't be so popular with watercolor artists and urban sketchers :) Lamy Safari fountain pens are used by many prominent watercolor artists. What size nib did your Safari have? It looks wider than the EF (extra fine) nib that I have.
@HajraMeeks
@HajraMeeks 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that totally makes sense--I guess I must have had a very fiddly and sensitive fountain pen in the past if it specified non-waterproof ink only. Glad to hear otherwise from you and others. :) My LAMY came with a F (fine) nib, which is just a touch bigger than 0.5 mm in writing width.

Loved the demonstration of different ink tools for watercolor. ✒️👍 Not sure how familiar you are with fountain pens so if you want something uber fine and waterproof, try the Platinum Extra Fine desk fountain pen paired with Platinum’s Carbon ink in Black or a fountain pen with a Fude nib for line variation (the nib looks ‘bent’ and it’s extra fine when using the tip and broad when using the flat body of the nib). HTH! Btw: Japanese fountain pen nibs are much finer than Western/European fountain pen nibs (e.g. a Western/European Fine would be comparable to a Japanese Medium).

💖 Such a great demo of some super cool tools! I love my glass pen and it was so cheap, and the tip is so easy to modify with a fine grit sandpaper. Those incredible nibs are something completely different, I’ve never come across them before. My favourite inking tool is a extra fine pentel brush pen, which is meant to be disposable, but I refill it with a blunt needle syringe. I also love my Pilot capless fountain pen with I got about 5-6 years ago in a charity shop, for only £3.50 (around $4). I could never have afforded full price on that pen, but it writes and draws like a dream, it’s soooo smooth. Enjoy your very fancy inks, they are really useful colours in my opinion. Lots of love to you and Elijah

Uhm...Hajra, I've been using waterproof inks in my fountain pens for years. So do LOTS of other folks. You just have to use waterproof inks designed for fountain pens. Popular brands are Platinum's Carbon Black, DeAtramentis Document inks, and Rohrer & Klingor SketchInks. Sailor also makes "nano" inks that are similar but I haven't found a source for them in North America.

@@HajraMeeks That's a pretty general statement from pen manufacturers. Their concern is that people put india ink or acrylic inks in fountain pens, which will ruin fountain pens.

Hello, there are some waterproof inks for fountain pen, Noodler's bulletproof (but take a long time to dry), Rohrer&Klinger Sketchink (my favourite with) De atramentis Dokument, Platinium carbon & Dan Nelson on youtube uses one from jerry I think but I don't live in the US so I'm not sure. Lamy is a great brand! I enjoy using the Fude nib (from Platinium) or soft nibs (Falcon from Pilot) when I'm sketchink. Which might not be your style but if you like to experiment those were my suggestions :)
