Thanks John and Kim for a fantastic interview. After writing many newsletters for over 25 years, I think a great newsletter should be a mixture of the timely and the timeless...

Good. Please ask Matthew Paulson morons to stop harassing me. On October 22, I got more than 22 unwanted emails telling me they can predict market cycles and ask for $140 per year of recycled news coming fresh other sources. I haven't been interested in their scams and delete care.if you can just ask Matthew Paulson to look in the mirror and try to Do the RIGHT thing. I know karma will find him !!!

Matt Paulson won't stop sending me unwanted garbage emails. I do not read his material or interested. On October 22 he sent me more than 22 unwanted emails to my account. That is very very twisted. I reached out to talk to him but he seems to be a con man than a good person.

Insightful as usual, John & Matt. Surprising that you mention politicisation because the client profile of most finpubs suggest right wing Trump supporters, even now. I've lost count of the Biden bashing emails I've read (& written). Which is fine, you write to your ideal prospect/client after all don't you? Polarisation works in marketing, you want your 'starving crowd' after all, your fans who will read every lift note/teaser email and click on every link to see what's on the other side. overall though, always good to hear from Matt, thanks John

Had a lot of fun on this! The embedded finance concept we discussed is a huge opportunity for publishers who crack the code on applying it to their own audiences. Think about it: Finpubs have the audience, the trust, and a significantly lower CAC than traditional financial institutions. And a lot of embedded finance plays are going to be pretty lightweight - don't require huge tech/headcount/infrastructure investments. Some finpub is going to watch this interview, offer a relevant service directly to their readers, and do phenomenally. If you do, please let me know! I'd love to hear your success. Same if you hit any speedbumps :)

So refreshing to hear someone else talking about this. It's all about asking :What does my list need to know - or what could I show them -- so that they will be more likely to become a customer of the main offer. It's one of the reasons, as a short form copywriter, I've been doing 5 - 7 day email courses that give a small win and get the prospect excited to take the next step. It's easy for the reader, trains them to open your emails, click on your links and consume your content. And it builds authority, credibility and know, like & trust in advance. Great interview!

We were serious about that Boehner launch!. I think we had 300k actual, real people who entered their email addresses into a form on that list. I'm torn on the idea of front end launches, but it was super fun to be a part of.

John and Brian - Thank you for letting us eavesdrop on a great conversation. This is obviously the big topic in FinPub right now. The days of the quick and easy money in our industry may be fading into history but this just means we have to get back to actually working for a living. Thanking the FTC may be as heretical as thanking Jerome Powell but clamping down on marketing excess is not all bad and I say good riddance to the marketing BS and hyperbole. A renewed focus on actual customer service and engagement is a good thing for our industry in the long run. Running a business that did not get drawn into the temptation (or the financial rewards) of the ten-year FinPub bubble, I am fine with seeing things return to earth. - Ed Coburn, CEO, Cabot Wealth Network

Hello again John - great video and looking forward to the launch. One idea you might have... As well as top copywriters doing podcast 'training' with you, you could produce short 5-minute interviews with members where they speak to camera without an interviewer. These could include a selection of the same questions you ask for every interview (the usual ones, name, business niche, what you've done/are doing, what you're looking for on the platform, how you can help other members etc.). That way you have a 'podcast log' and easy to use networking resource of videos and transcripts, where members can connect more easily and do business with each other. To answer your three questions... 1) Yes, a great resource to launch 2) Something extra? See my answer above 3) Ramping up FinPub and training? Sounds great and a resource I'd use. Speak soon and hope you're well on the other side of the 'pond'. Best wishes.

I like the idea of connecting with others since it can be difficult to make it to the events. There are sites like Rich's Steal Our Winners for the latest marketing/advertising/strategy ideas, but it's typically not specifically for financial.

I love the idea for the community with an easy spot to follow up with anyone from FMS. I think for swaps and for smaller groups it would be a great way to get access to the greater group. Business hub is great, I think training hub for new team members would be great, also good in general, learn something everytime i attend a session. Theres a lot of knowledge in the group and those who've been here for a while tend to forget how long it took and the learning curve, would be great to focus on and help new up and comers.
@GeorgeMecham9 ай бұрын
I think the quality of the network is what's most important. All the features will figure themselves out. I think the easiest model is something more similar to Reddit, let the users of the community decide over time what break-outs and channels they want. Let them moderate it and be responsible for it. Create benchmarks of quality on a per-channel or per user level - if a user or channel isn't active, it shouldn't be there. But quality of the people is what matters. I have group chats I can go to where I know everyone in it is CEO level talent that has built $30m+ businesses - that chat is very active and full of a lot of wisdom (and d*ck waving, which is also fun). If you don't contribute you are kicked out. I am in other groups that have lesser talent, if it's clogged up with lesser talent and wall flowers then the groups die quickly, no one shares. You definitely need some super-users/moderators that will keep the convo warm, bring new topics to the table. So whatever you decide, I'd strongly consider an owners lounge or a group of what you consider to be the highest level talent in your network. Let them interact independently they will be the fuel that keeps the other features going because they can bring their staff into the fold where they see value. Also I think you have be willing to kick out people that don't add value. No one wants to share with people that only take.

I really like the idea of having an easy spot to follow up with active people in the space, FMS is great, but I find it hard to follow up on some of the smaller meetings or the "quick chat at the bar" type meetings, where you want to follow up, but it's hard to remember once you are back at work post FMS. Also hard sometimes to go into depth on subjects, so I look forward to that in that with the new service
@financialmarketingsummit9 ай бұрын
Thanks David. There have been a ton of subjects I almost had at FMS that were a little too technical or in-depth for that format. I also think this format would allow kind of an in-depth series of 3-4 conversations around some more complex topics.

Good talk. I wanted to be there but it was my son’s birthday… I don’t miss those. At 28:10 you say… “If you can identify tight niches that have a lot of money that you can market to… you are going to have a very stable business.” There are 3 words here that are the most important, “Identify tight niches”. The bull market and Covid forced FinPub into the mainstream… most businesses chased the volume with mainstream ideas. That was a mistake. We need to re-focus on big, fringe ideas and go deeply into those ideas. Customers pay us to be trusted advisors with ideas they WON’T get from their brokers.

One clarification: The FMS Shareholder Acquisition event will launch in New York. I wasn't clear in that I meant that is the event concept I would bring back to London vs. a publisher focused event. Just because at the last FMS London we had more bankers, financiers, and investor relations marketers show up than just about any other segment. And that's without marketing to them.

Will there be any recordings for those not currently in the US?
@financialmarketingsummit Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, no, as many of our speakers share detailed information about their particular business and don't like to have all that information made publicly available where it could be abused. So, I can never tell ahead of time how many presentations, or which specific presentations will be able to be shared after the fact. We had incidences in the early years where people posted clips & pictures out of context in order to make a particular publisher look bad on social media. It can be frustrating for everyone who can't make it to the event but it's part of what keeps FMS so engaging because presenters know they can share the fuller picture of what is going on in their business without worrying about having to explain it out of context to their customer base later. I do, on occasion, release individual presentations but because our speakers are people actively building their businesses online there are always requests not to record or not to distribute.
@tsensuke5259 Жыл бұрын
@@financialmarketingsummit Fair enough. I'm surprised at what you said, I didn't think finpubs was the kind of industry to do the dirty on businesses by posting out of context clips online! Anyway, hope you enjoy the event.
