This was the beginning of a great era for the world squash champion Jahangir khan
@saleemkirmani558316 күн бұрын
Bruce Brownlee's highest rank was number 6 in the world. He was a very good player. Jahangir Khan's first professional victory in a tournament final was against him at the New Zealand Open in 1980, at the age of 16 or 17 .

If Hashim Khan was fitter and younger with modern squash facilities, he would have destroyed all the World Open and British Open champions like Geoff Hunt, Jahangir Khan , Jansher Khan, Rodney Martin and Peter Nicol etc.
@saleemkirmani558317 күн бұрын
Jahangir Khan was 2 months short of his 16th birthday when he won the World Amateur Squash Championship. Unfortunately, his older brother Torsam Khan passed away playing at the Australian Open squash championship two months after this win.

Great to see this footage thanks, Cam was an excellent player, one of Aussie's greatest back in the day. Good to read the story around this BO, cheers. Makes me wonder why the pakistani players weren't featuring in the semis, Zaman, Jahan, Mohibullah etc

Not surprising that squash on Tv wasn’t very popular back in 1976. What was the frame rate/second . . 4? Totally different coverage now, angle’s, white ball, glass court. Now we can actually see it!

Hunt was a mercurial player, and a great bloke.

A perfect example of why Jansher will never be the greatest in my book. Always slow to clear in the front corners, blocking his opponent
@stevehughes1510Ай бұрын
The player that won the first match in the first part of the vid was Dean Williams from Aussie, don't know who his opponent was though, and in the second game it was Qamar Zaman who beat Gawain Briars.

How good were these guys? Obviously they were pro's but Id be curous to see if they could keep up with modern day squash.
@stevehughes1510Ай бұрын
@@waltersavage4796 These guys would have footed it well with the players of today. You take the top players of the past and give them today's rackets and ball, they'd be fine to compete. One thing that's obvious in regards to today's matches is what we called back in the day 'the American scoring system'(where every point counts), this scoring system makes the matches of today shorter in duration compared to the English scoring system of the past where a player could only score a point on their serve.
@saleemkirmani558314 күн бұрын
I liked Dean Williams a lot. He was a hard hitting player, who was the runner up to Jahangir Khan at the 1982 World Open. I did see a fascinating match between Dean and Maqsood Ahmed from Pakistan in Karachi. It went to 5 games with Maqsood emerging as the winner. It was an upset win.
@jacobpaintАй бұрын
He seemed to be stepping so close to the walls when ghosting left and right. Is that a result of changes in how people play and/or old style racquets?
@stevehughes1510Ай бұрын
A convincing win in the end to Jansher but you have to feel for Rodney, some of the refereeing decisions were atrocious. Quick fire rallies from these two, fast paced and precise play for the most part.

The last World Amateur Champs in '79, Jahangir playing Phil Kenyon in Melbourne. After that we all headed up to Brisbane for the teams event. Jahangir couldn't play in that because he wasn't a member of the Pakistani team, he came out of nowhere to win the title and the rest of course is history.
@stevehughes1510Ай бұрын
Bruce was one of NZ's greatest players and the first kiwi to win a major international title, the British Amateur in '76. Jonah came to NZ in '68 and played here against the top Aussies Hiscoe and Nancarrow. As a kid in those days it was inspiring to see these great players playing the tournaments.

That's a great video thanks James, a good history and background of Hashim. Dardir was my coach here in NZ and we spent a lot of time together over the years talking about his early days of playing the Khans in the '50s and early '60s in the various British Opens etc, he held all of them in very high regard. All the best and thanks again.

Good to see this, Hashim was 64/65 years old and Geoff about 30. A good bit of squash history, too bad about the sound.

For the most part the rackets were heavy and clumsy, the Aussies and the Brits tended to make the best ones back in the day.

In the very first Cheezels championships in Australia in 1975 for junior players U14, I played Chris Dittmar and gave him 5 points over 3 games. I also beat Peter Nance 23 to 22 over 3 games. Both those guys I believe went on to become world junior champions. I faded into obscurity, as a lot of junior players do for whatever reasons.
