Reading through cpmments , people are correct , I used to go back in the 90's and it was extremely cheap compared to now , it really throws me off with a bad taste because all it took was for a few celebrities to start vacationing there and they jack the prices up , try Cozumel .

Playa Papaya charged me and my gf $100 minimum to use the beach and the sun beds. I didn’t care and had several drinks. The guacamole was horrible. Borracho pero buen muchacho! Be careful at the beach - muy dinero

William, I have traveled a few places in Central America. Some places I have visited that have many people your age as expats are Belize Ambergris Caye and also Roatan Honduras in the area of West End ! Headed down for 3 weeks to West Bay Honduras. You definitely need to check into these places. I think you will love them both and a bit cheaper for monthly stays ! Also there is Utila Honduras that is also very beautiful ! Any questions, just reach out.

William i think you would be better off in Playa del Carmen. Tulum is nice for partying but not so great to live. Party in Tulum and hang out in but live in Playa del Carmen. The infrastructure is better in Playa and it's less expensive. Tulum is a "Cash Grab" with dirt roads. Apartment rental prices are coming down in Tulum because they are over built but not a good enough reason to live there. Just my opinion.
