I was at this race. I was 13 and a huge Jeff Gordon fan. I loved how people at the track were dogging him early on in the race watching him to continue to go around the track under caution for repairs only for him to nearly pull it off. Gordon was hated in the mid 2000s

There's a reason why NASCAR now has it as a rule that the rear bumper stays on. It's basically free lunch with the old car to take it off. I struggle to think of a car that didn't become much faster after taking off just the rear bumper in a race. Mark Martin at Spring Martinsville 2009 comes to mind to show just how ridiculous it was.

I truly thought he was dead in the water after Wallace hit him but after seeing him methodically fight his way back I thought he was gonna take the lead. That damn caution with like 10 to go really killed it. To finish 2nd after crashing was a remarkable performance!

There is no denying that something had to be done, given that the opportunity to gain a position (or several depending on the circumstances) simply became too much to pass up. With that being said, and this is a bold statement, racing to the caution still has it's place in NASCAR. Hear me out - how many finishes to races since September 20th, 2003 have been ruined because of cautions (more or less) on the final lap? Several dozen, at least. Here's a few, without having to think about it: --> 2004 Aaron's 499 --> 2016 Sparks Energy 300 --> 2013 Aaron's 312 --> 2016 Subway Firecracker 250 --> 2019 GEICO 500 --> 2021 Coke Zero Sugar 400 Correspondingly, there is also no denying that racing to the caution allowed for thrilling moments to come to fruition that simply would never happen when applying the modern rules. Examples to support this include the following, but not limited to: --> kzbin.info/www/bejne/banZaH1qmppohMksi=3WalOEE07u5oZ4-s&t=14 Summary: the top eight cars are ahead of the wreck, the top six keep racing back to the line. --> kzbin.info/www/bejne/q2Tai4qkq5qNarssi=cMqWi5q8zmp-d5Gt&t=9886 Summary: a 3 lap sprint to end the 2002 Kroger 300 at the Kentucky Speedway. 10 cars are left on the lead lap for the restart to contend for the win. On the final lap, #21 Jay Sauter wrecks in turn two; caution is thrown. The two leaders keep racing to the line in what ends up being a fantastic finish. --> kzbin.info/www/bejne/bp6kmImGbt2JepIsi=_Hb2ZqXe0_fkhGxj&t=7360 Summary: After a spin in turn 2 on lap 228 of the 2003 Auto Club 500, Dale Earnhardt Jr. holds off race leader Bobby Labonte to get his lap back; the crowd cheers him on. --> kzbin.info/www/bejne/sIuZk2efbdWcpNEsi=UGu2zNlY2Jk1aDO7&t=8532 Summary: Bobby Labonte blocks Bobby Hamilton, triggering a massive wreck coming out of turn 2 on the final lap of the 2001 EA Sports 500. 27 cars are in the lead pack entering the final lap; only nine of them or so get through to try and win. There is no debate that this finish would have been less exciting if the current caution rules were in place. --> kzbin.info/www/bejne/roLGqX6PZt59rbMsi=Me_vEwhL-QMBVyPA&t=3953 Summary: Jeff Gordon had to pit by himself under green during the 2002 Pepsi 400 at Daytona and eventually got lapped. He never got the lap back. The video shows Jeff Gordon trying to get his lap back but to no avail. With all of that said, the original question still hasn't been answered. Can racing to the caution work in modern NASCAR? If you have gone through the examples, most of them reference races that took place at Super-Speedways. I firmly believe that racing to the caution can still be allowed at tracks two miles or longer. Anything smaller than this does not allow any benefits to justify sacrificing safety. It doesn't have to be that complex, either. Here's what a caution would imply, theoretically, at tracks two miles or longer: Yellow flag --> Keep racing back to the start/finish line. Red flag --> Do not race back to the start/finish line (no different than it is now). Specific examples of racing back being acceptable: --> kzbin.info/www/bejne/rp3GZ5xnm5VmY80si=G1ERbQ4EH58ltpSs&t=9046 Summary: #77 Blake Jones gets spun coming out of turn two. Having the field race back to the line does not put the 77 in any immediate danger. --> kzbin.infozbRiunCINrs?si=yISduJOpJ7RhKUC6&t=8959 Summary: #6 Brad Keselowski is well out of the racing line, may as well let the field race back. This may make the caution period shorter because that is one less lap that is spent getting the field bunched up. Pro: Assuming it is too dangerous to race back to the start finish line, NASCAR has the option to throw the red flag to get safety crews to attend any wrecked race cars immediately. No delays. Pro: Assuming the red flag is not justified, the caution is thrown instead. Drivers not on the lead lap can try to get their lap back by passing the race leader. This also allows for a finish similar to the 2001 EA Sports 500. Pro: The Generation 7 race car more or less stops on a dime, so drivers can slow down immediately once crossing the start finish line. Con: What warrants a red or even a yellow flag is up to interpretation. Every wreck is different. Con: People will question why the rules for a yellow flag are different across different track lengths. Con: Assuming the caution is thrown, safety crews must wait until everyone gets back to the line. At a road course, this could mean waiting for up to nearly three minutes. Con: Caution lights would need to be updated to indicate red instead of only amber. Con: A decision must be made more or less instantaneously. Red or yellow? I rest my case.

This is a rare instance of NASCAR, or any major sport for that matter, making a change that actually makes sense and isn't just change for the sake of change that we're all just expected to accept. "Racing back to the line" defeats the purpose of waving **caution** flags, and the fact that it was ever an accepted practice says a lot about the culture that still persists today of using yellows first and foremost as a tool to bunch up the field instead of using them for their intended purpose.

While the racing back to the line might be the traditional thing, I think that the Lucky Dog / Free Pass rule with no racing back to the line is the smarter choice for driver safety while still keeping the race competitive.

I'm glad they changed the rule, as what was said in the broadcast is so true. Slowing the cars down on yellow allows safety crews to respond sooner. I just hate that this has opened the door up to what we have today, with fast drivers constantly complaining about lap cars fighting them and not getting out of their way. That was never part of the gentleman's agreement
