I also asked about your use of 2x4's standing on their side as RR ties on a previous video. I would expect that gives better drainage with the deeper ties and more gravel, but have you ever had the ties rock or slip out because they are standing on their sides?
@NortonRailway5 ай бұрын
Hi there. Sorry, KZbin isn't notifing me of comments. I had seen it done with 2x4's on a video back in the day when I had built the loop at my parents house back in the early 2000's. So I just copied from the video. Fast forward 20+ years, about 95% of the ties reclaimed where still good and could be reused. (gravel side was good for re-use, exposed side was rotted a little bit. I never had an issue with them tipping, rocking or slipping. Yes it does take lots more gravel, but I find it to be a good solid foundation for the rail. I put down about 2", tamp with the gas powered tamper, then place the ties upright, with 3.5" spacing. Then I dump the final ballast, rake it good, and brush the rails clear, so only the top of the ties are showing. I'm sure 2x2's would be fine. I just don't want to rip 2x4's for weeks. lol. You're correct about the mesh / plastic for weeds etc. I had put some down on the ground before the 2" tamp in some areas. I ran out and forgot to get more. lol

I agree with the comment regarding "plastic under tracks". Seems it would eliminate future problems and maintenance.

Run a strip of platic under tracks so weeds dont grow up in the gravel. Also will keep dirt dry so frost wont heave tracks so much

Hey, it looks like your railroad ties are 2x4's standing on the side. Is that correct and if so, what is the purpose? I'd guess for deeper gravel and better drainage? Holding power? Thanks
@NortonRailway5 ай бұрын
Hey there. Yes, the ties you see are 2x4, from the reclaimed track I had at my parents house. I'll be switching over to 2x2 once the old ones are used up. Engine is still with Aaron over at Mill Brook getting all new wiring. Hopefull will have it back soon. I'll make an update video this weekend. Thanks for watching!

Hey sir, i am really interested in this. Ive been a model train enthusiasts my entire life, i come from multi generation railroading family. The ny central, Delaware hudson, conrail and amtrak. I grew up operating amtrak up n down between Albany and NYC. I'm a custom builder by trade and i was looking into joining train mountain in Oregon but idk if i want to be in a large club. Im very introverted. I want to discuss helping you. I will work for exchange place to stay. I have a dog. I know how to scavenge materials and be very creative with use what you got. Im in my mid 40s btw. You sound very boston area ? Im from upstste ny but currently in west TX. I tell you what, bnsf makes nfs and csx look like a back yard train layout. Lol its all wide open and trains usually follow the roads so youll see 6 7 8 trains in a hour trip sometimes. Biiiiiiig trains. But out here 100 cars with 5-6 head units, dpu in middle ans few more on rear don't seem big because you can see both ends at the same time 😂

This folks is what not to do when cleaning your machine. That much water going into the machine that is plugged In and turned on is a bad idea. LoL lots of water and an electrical appliance is just a bad idea. These machines have openings with wires just under the heating element. Someone is not going to be so lucky one of the times cleaning the machine like that. Read the manual to see how to clean your machine people. Each machine will tell you the way they want you to clean it. Do not do what this dolt is doing. This guy isn’t the poster child for safety, he let his kids put their hands under the bowl more than once before physically getting them off the machine.

How do u get the track the rite distance apart for the train do u have a guide when laying the track xxxxxx
@Marbelup8 ай бұрын
You make or buy a track gauge, or several. The track gauge is usually slightly wider on curves, so you need a different track gauge for curves.

I did get another 50' installed. It's been really rainy and cold here in MA. And I'm running low on gravel, so I've been indoors keeping warm and dry 😂. The locomotive is still down, I keep frying the motor controller 😞. I did find some wiring plans online so I'm looking into that. Lol I can't win. Thanks for watching!

Will the hopper be bottom dump capable?
@NortonRailway Жыл бұрын
Great question! To be honest, I wasn't planning on that but... I guess I could look into that feature. I've been watching lots of Mill Brook Railroad videos, and there are some interesting designs I've seen for bottom dumping, side dumping and tipper hoppers. I was going to look into some of those designs also, down the road. I'm getting tired of hauling 5 gallon buckets of gravel myself 😂.
