The title is incorrect. Because all gaming mice have some component break after a few years.

I am in the process of doing the same, using a PAW3370 from pixart. It is actually a straight forward process to get the data sheet with the SROM code. But I will be handling the sensor through a ESP32, not a custom PCB

Oh my god the damn side switches in the g203 are the bane of my existence, I'm glad you did this! I settled for an AutoHotKey script I found online and it works fine for me. Hopefully custom mice become a more accessible thing in the future!

Man it sure would be a shame if someone uploaded a ripped copy of that SROM to the internet. I mean it'd be a truly heinous, irredeemable crime to do so of course, because private entities leveraging the public judicial system to prevent people sharing their intellectual property is completely morally justified and is not a complete misunderstanding of the very core concepts underlying the free market, I'm just saying it'd be a real shame if someone did upload a ripped SROM.

honest question here, are we sure this is actual part failure? I'm switching to trackballs, but for the past decade or two I've basically been using the G502 and it's derivatives (if a mouse doesn't have a scroll lock, left/right scroll tapping and forward/backward m4/m5 buttons it's a non starter as far as I'm concerned) and while I *_have_* had that bouncing happen to me, I just slammed my mouse down on the table a few times and it went away, ended up being able to use every mouse it happened to for years without issue, only switching because they got too grimy or otherwise wore to the point where it was just more practical/desirable to buy a new one instead. If it was 'real' hardware failure though percussive maintenance like that should, at best, buy you a few days or weeks before the problem comes back far worse - it shouldn't solve it for years.

Oh, that's phenomenal. I've been doing a lot of RP2040 work lately, and my second G300s mouse is just about dead in the same way as usual. Suppose I better start working on this while I can still click most of the time.

a better way to do it is manulally opne switch and remove oxide layer from contact points ( you need clipper and a needle to dis assemble switch housing and you mouse will again work for 2 years normally )

After replacing the switch a few times the solder mask or solder pads will start to deform, scratch, or decouple from the PCB, because of heat cycling damage.

Very nice. Maybe v2, just directly put the rp2040 ic on the pcb? LCSC does have in stock, so jlc can solder it on for you and you can put the usb port where ever you wish it to be.

Found your video on my feed today right after yesterday my G102 got this bounce problem 0:58 on one of the keys. Bought it in 2019, after 6 year it decided to only had that problem yesterday. The fact that this is open source tempted me to do this project but it'd be much, much, more expensive than buying new one here in my country, especially making the custom PCB and 3D printing. (damn cool video btw)

don't buy logitech. everything they sell is crap. either the hardware itself, or the software they provide. I bought so many items by logitech over the years (20 years or so), hoping, that the cheap product finally is a good one, but it never is. right now I'm using a logitech keyboard and mouse. hardware is good (if you can accept, that you see significant wear on the mouse, after only a year of use), but the software is bad. it took over a year, until they updated the software, so I can finally turn the light off on the keyboard >.< the mouses extra buttos sometimes randomly do not do what I programmed them for. don't be as stupid as I am and just buy something else ;-)

Now you need to replace switches in your custom PCB and make new one after few replacements. Switches are switches and they will break. Cool project, completely pointless tho :D

good result and engineering! I don't know how your old mice failed so often though- I use a mouse for 12 hours every day since they had balls in them... and NOT ONCE did I have a broken switch. All the problems I ever had was related to the mouse wheel and most mice are also bad at flying into a wall.. which can be easily fixed by not playing Overwatch...

Like more and more as companies just keep cutting costs it seems like the only way to get quality products is to just make them yourself, or find someone who's equally as fed up as you are who's already done it

I had a G502 that worked extremely well for years after buying it used from a friend. When it finally died, I went to go replace it with a new G502. Every single part of it just felt so much cheaper. I'm still using that one, so it's lasted quite a while at least. But every so often it's just like "man this thing feels so cheap".

Man, I really hope so! But the debouncing thing isn't particularly hard for a product engineer to figure out, so it's got to be a cost-cutting measure somehow, or deliberate. I think the only way to get them to implement it is to raise awareness that it's possible and don't add cost anything but two more PCB traces and two more used pins on the MCU.

I can attest to logitechs lack of quality control; I have 2 g203's - in one the middle mouse button barely works, on the other the buttons all stopped working. - Update: It turns out the buttons hadn't stopped working, the thumb buttons were now left and right click; the PC I was using the mouse on had somehow corruped the Logitech G Hub software and reinstalling it fixed the problem. But, if I try and use the mouse on a PC without the G Hub installed, it's the thumb buttons again.

A nifty project that I am _immediately_ sending off to HackADay! Some thoughts: 1. The box-shaped mouse design is over fifty years old. (Yes, really; the overall shape of the mouse hasn't changed much since it was invented in the mid-sixties.) It isn't ergonomic and requires you to bend your hand in an unnatural manner. I suggest making a design like the 'DELUX Seeker', which not only orients the mouse body so it naturally fits in your hand, but includes a hand rest, so you aren't forced to either hold your hand up off the mousing surface or drag the heel of your hand across it. As a bonus, it will naturally be larger, so there will be more room for things like more buttons, a D-pad, or using a small trackball for the scroll wheel. 2. For those who don't want to go this far, replacing your mouse buttons isn't difficult or expensive. (Even the best quality buttons are generally less than $2 each.) You can even choose buttons with different activation pressures. Look up 'Definitive Omron Switch Guide for Mice' for a forum post to start you down the rabbit hole. It is well worth it. 3. As you are making your own mouse from scratch, I would _not_ mount the switches directly to the motherboard, as that locks you into only those switches which use one particular footprint. 4. Optical switches using photo interrupters don't suffer the same problems mechanical switches do and have *much* lower latency. 5. Digital Hall Effect sensors offer the same advantages as optical sensors but also aren't affected by ambient light/dust/etc. As well, if you use analog HE sensors, you can do things like fine-tune how fast they trigger on the fly. 6. By making your own switches, you can add features like adjustable springs to tweak how much force is needed to activate them. Cheers!
