tl;dr:
1) learn the hiragana and katakana
-- you should not stay on this step for longer than a week
2) learn basic grammar and maybe a handful of extremely common words
-- this should not take longer than a month, and if you start getting bored, start reading
3) read.
-- it's going to be REALLY slow and REALLY hard when you first start out. THIS IS NORMAL!!! just keep putting in effort every single day, even if you can barely do it.
By the way it usually takes at least a year to become truly comfortable and have confidence that you understand what you're reading. And that's if you manage to read for a few hours a day. It normally takes multiple years.

So I was halfway through Tae Kim guide and getting kinda bored and decided to play Aiyoku no Eustia thanks to your tutorial. All I can say is that I'm getting my ass clapped in nihongo. This reminds me of when I started playing JRPGs in English (English not being my first language). I'm trying to use this on Muv-Luv (steam) and i can't get it to work properly. For some reason i get like 50% of the first line and then i get less and less text afterwards. Is the steam version not compatible with textractor? or am i doing somethings wrong?

I actually have the DeepL extension and it's pretty nice as a translator, for the most part, but I can see how it can stunt you for sure. Had no idea you could mouseover like this! I've had this video saved for so long, I think around 2 years almost, and I'm finally doing this. Well in that time I finished 4 decks on anki with a good amount of vocab tho most of the complex ones didn't stick, but I feel my understanding of the basics has really improved to the point where if I can read the words that I don't know and see their meaning(s) I'd be able to piece together the whole sentence.

I am so fucking mad. Why couldn't stuff like this exist 8 years ago when I learned kanjis like a god damn cave man trying to find them by radicals when I saw them in VN and there was no furiganas. Now I just use always on top script and with this and I got a dictionary than tells me the correct reading and translations in a second. Great stuff, I heartily recommend the Nazeka on firefox.

for anyone who wants to do this and intends on utilizing anki for some vocab, I can reccomend using the yomichan mousehover dictonary and having a clipboard page, because you can set up yomichan up with anki connect and make one click detailed cards (except for image and sentence audio)

Thanks for making this, Ive been studying japanese for about 9 months(using JFZ and AIAIJ, currently I'm halfway trough aiaij and planning on using tobira next) but I had no idea you could do that.... Ive never been really motivated to play vns in japanese bc i had to use hand drawn recognition for every kanji i didnt know(yea i didnt know texthookers were a thing until yersterday).. Sadly this doesnt work on all vns TT on Taisho x Alice everything looks fine ingame but on the Nazeka tab it just shows some random characters. it works fine w my other cracked vns though so i might just play ep 1 in english and actually buy ep 2 on steam so that the texthooking works anyways ty for this again lol, whats your Japanese level now, after 2 years?

Interesting, I haven't read VNs in a while (last one I read was either Baldr Heart or Sen no Hatou years ago) and I was wondering if the tooling improved since ITH + Translation Aggregator (with Jparser). Nazeka seems interesting and I might check it out later. At the very least, the pop-up is instant compared to TA's slightly delayed popup.

I hate that I just now found this and never tried to actually look for something to help me with this. I've read Majikoi A-5 in japanese once and managed to finish it because of how much I love the series. That said, it was a pain in the ass the whole way through. I had to constantly listen like 10 times one sentence and then try to write what I hear in "Jisho" to see if I got the writing right. This would have helped me so freaking much. The same thing happened to me with games in Japanese. I had no idea I could find the script on the internet and that extensions like "Yomichan" existed so I could have an easier time reading it. Yomichan is also helping me when it comes to reading WN's, something I had never thought about doing since I had been using Jisho for the most part At least now I can enjoy my japanese media easier. I'm sure this will help me a lot.

Had you used Rikaichamp for onmouseover dictionary you would be able to push shift for meaning/kanji/name rotation of given kanji/word (no need to look for the names on web. but I realize many kanji names can be read differently)

Do you have any advice when it comes to knowing when to drop the text hooker? When I initially started learning I never felt bad about excessively relying on the hooker or not using anki because I figured that as long as I just kept reading vns my Japanese would inevitably progress and everything would just eventually work out in the end. After completing 25 or so vns, while I can definitely say I improved a ton from where I began, I've started to wonder if I'm being too naive in thinking that I'll eventually "get good" at Japanese if I don't put in the effort (e.g. going cold turkey or supplementing with srs) to try to break from the hooker. My progress feels slow when compared to others (yes, I know) and my ability to recall kanji that I technically know the reading/meaning for is starting to frustrate me. I'm constantly second guessing myself when reading and there are kanji that I constantly fail to recall despite encountering the word a billion times. A lot of the time rather than reading the kanji, it just feels like I'm just guessing the word based on context and trying to vaguely remember what the kanji looked like. Do you think this is a sign that it's time to drop the training wheels or am I just overthinking and this is a problem where I can overcome by powering through more vns. Like I want to reach basic fluency in a reasonable amount of time and I'm probably at a point where it's feasible to go cold turkey, but my lazy-ass is finding it hard to drop the convenience of the hooker unless someone explicitly tells me something along the lines of "continuing to use the hooker will severely stall your learning and unless you start putting more effort you will just be wasting your time". (not sure if this is even true and would like your input)

@@Vexxed This is a throwaway account so I didn't see this question til now. My bad. To answer your question, I initially tried reading with manual lookups but was awful at all three methods (hand-write, spelling via known words, and radicals) so I switched to texthook with no mouse-over lookup. Didn't last long since the pandemic happened and I stopped reading regularly, dropping off my progress. I essentially "lost" two years to this but I don't consider it all that bad since it pretty much killed off all the 焦り I had back then. Since I wasn't reading I did KKLC instead and that ended up solving the original problem I had with kanji. Well, I say KKLC but I actually didn't do the course and just brute forced the anki deck without mnemonics. Despite this, it still improved my kanji recognition ability tremendously and cleared the "blurriness" I had with kanji. As a result, the urge to constantly double check myself with the texthooker went away. Also, as someone that's typically bad at spelling words (applies to both japanese and english), being able to bring up a kanji in text-copy form via typing in the KKLC keyword is a godsend for manual lookups. Semi-related story, but back when I started learning jp, I had a negative experience with anki thanks to core 6k/10k and saw a lot of "anki boring and bad, just read" advice. As a result, I never gave anki a fair shot outside of premade vocab decks and ended up losing out on a lot of easy jp progress. Anyways, very late reply so you probably don't care at this point but maybe it'll help someone who comes across this in the comments. Probably won't catch replies since throwaway account and all. P.S. Wareya if you happen to read this, I realized that I upvoted your reply back then but didn't actually say thanks. Overly due, but thanks for your reply from back then.

Bonus advice(?) that may or may not work for you: If you're like me with bad memory and find yourself failing a lot of anki cards, hard limit your anki time. (I typically do 5-7 minutes) While obvious, imposing a limit reduces the memory workload/difficulty and I found that anki stops feeling painful if it only lasts for a few minutes. After doing this anki basically turned into the equivalent of a soshage daily mission for me; small daily commitment for relatively high reward/effort ratio. The "downside" to this advice is that you have to be very diligent in cutting out cards once you have them down else you end up wasting your limited study time doing useless reps. Word mining only takes two buttons if you're using mouse-over lookup so I strongly suggest starting a mining deck. "See new word, lookup, mine, move on" Having a deck really speeds up the learning process and imo greatly reduces the stress of being overwhelmed by new words. I put off making a deck for so long since I didn't realize how effortless mining really was. Google Lens Camera OCR ("google lens" app on android, "google" app on ios) is drastically better than any other PC OCR I have tried so I highly recommend it if you hate manual lookups. Google OCR to clipboard > clipboard pc auto-sync app > pc mouse-over lookup is my current workflow. I find it faster than manual lookup but still just annoying enough to help with memory retention. Always felt that OCR wasn't viable as a replacement to manual lookup due to its hit or miss nature, but google ocr is seriously good and completely changed my opinion. The Google translate app also has a ocr function, but I don't recommend it because of ui issues, including a pointless scanning animation and the accuracy felt slightly worse for some reason. (might just be me)

500 to 2000 hours if you start from scratch (basic grammar, very basic vocab) to understand 80-95% what happens depending on the difficulty of kanji, you also need to be regular

@@toushinrance I also just just learned vocab and not kanji. Honestly I think it's an all paths lead to rome situation, but I think the path of using only vocab is actually paved better (faster) than studying kanji and vocab. It's all I've done so far at the very least. Don't wait too long to start reading, it's always going to be hard no matter how many words you know, but by the time you reach 1500-2000 words you're ready to read some simple slice of life manga or anime, or maybe read a simpler VN. The best way to learn is by actually doing it,.

This is great video and as a fellow Japanese learner I pretty much agree with the majority of advice you gave in the video. The only thing I will say is that I don't think a pre-made anki deck for the first 500 - 1000 most basic Japanese words is a bad idea. I used a JLPT N5 tango deck in the beginning stages which helped gain a decent foundation. Other than that it's probably better to make your own cards from content you enjoy.

how about practicing reading with a furigana generator that adds furigana on top of the kanji? is this method a viable option?

Furigana inserters are parsers and as such will always make a lot of mistakes. It's not every sentence, but there are enough mistakes that you're better off learning to read with a dictionary. If it weren't for the fact that furigana inserters are parsers, there wouldn't be a problem. For example, learning from manga targeted at kids (which always has furigana) is no problem.

The browser addon landscape has changed a lot since I made this video and there's a lot of stuff that's harder to get working than it used to be. So I did exactly as you said and it worked. Then as I progressed through the game there was a text box with 2-3 sentences and Textractor only managed to grabbed the first sentence. I tried switching through all the different hooks but nothing seems to work. Any idea how I can fix this?

6:15 - Regarding fetching characters, using Google Lens on an Android Phone provides great accuracy for such lines. I've only had it be inaccurate for me once or twice in a game with a really annoying font. (It makes エロ look like the western word "ID" as in "identification" lol) 11:27 - VNDB is an alright resource most of the time, although for *some* series, their naming system sucks ass, and I personally disagree with their philosophy of "The Japanese don't know how Romaji works". This has resulted in fx. Luka from Steins;Gate being rendered as Ruka, which is wrong for a multitude of reasons.

@@wareya I took the argument with them with regards to Luka and a few other characters, citing consistency in romanization as the biggest reason for them to change it. I guess the word from the official translators on having the name romanized one specific way by the copyright holder isn't worth much in their ears either.

I learned by reading manga, games, and VNs after getting about halfway through tae kim. It's brutal but it's going to take a while no matter what you do anyway, so you might as well try to get the fun in from the start. If you're really stuck you can slow down and work on vocab and sentence structure some more, but it only really helps you get over the hump. Reading and listening give the best long term gains and are the most fun, at least once you can get over the stress of reading/listening in a new language.

When I was a beginner I tried using Anki and it helped a little but I had a negative retention rate and it took up something like a flat one or two hours a day even though I was still in my first several hundred words. It helped a little, yes, but it didn't really result in real language ability, just less trips to the dictionary, and the difference wasn't that big. It might help more for you, who knows? Different strokes for different folks.

I wish kanji never existed. I'd be able to read better if the writing system was more alphabetical. Edit after 1 year: Words in Kanji are actually better than words purely in kana because of the number of homonyms in Japanese.

To be honest machine TL aren't that bad if you know how to handle them for learning. Google and Papago are definitely shitty but DeepL is great most the time... I mean the mistakes that it makes are mostly related to confusions with the object of an action, where an action is aimed at and several other "lack of context" related mistakes. You just need to have a critical interpretation of it's output by being grammar-aware and pitting your own translation against the MTL's one. Never take the MTL translation at face value (you could even ignore the parts of the sentences which aren't relevant to your understanding) and accept it only if it clicks and logically makes sense. It's like you were two friends trying to solve a problem and suggesting your own solutions. In general I would say, first try to translate the sentence on your own, search for the grammar -> if you struggle put it on DeepL -> If still doesn't make sense, find other examples sentences or just ask on some japanese learning community website :v

It really does not have to be that difficult provided you have a good method. It's actually much easier than you might think. I highly recommend checking out Refold or themoeway websites if you want to know how you should start teaching yourself. I've been learning Japanese by myself for over two years now and found great success with it, though I still have much to improve on. I've completed at least 7 untranslated visual novels so far and I am able to enjoy them the same way I would in English. So please do not convince yourself that learning Japanese is some herculean feat because it isn't. You can do it. 頑張ってくれ！

@@DanneoYT It really doesn't have to be if you have a good method. The majority of the actual process is just listening and reading the language you're trying to learn until your subconscious mind gets used to it. You don't have to be a genius to do it believe me.
