When Snape came out of the shack did Snape have his wand? I thought this was why Snape just used his body to block the children and not a spell. I do have a query about Lupin though as isn't it suggested he bites himself after turning because he keeps himself trapped/locked up but if he's taking the potion from Snape isn't he ment to keep his human mind? Perhaps the wolf side still elevates his agitation/stress so he still hurts himself even though he's a man in his mind? Lupin's story really is incredibly sad. All the Marauders really even the vile Peter as he was motivated by fear.

I'd find it hard to believe any wizard, let alone one as adept as Snape, would leave their wand behind anywhere, especially somewhere dangerous or with antagonists walking around. I think that's just a poorly staged part of the film, because how would Snape beeline to the trio so hard he didn't notice the werewolf first? Can't remember the specifics of the book, but the reason Sirius is locked up and Harry has to save him is because Snape catches him. Again, not sure why he'd attempt to do that or even be able to without a wand. Wizards aren't exactly known for their physical strength.

@Ozunoda I don't think I've explained appropriately, it wasn't planned by Snape to not have his wand, I seem to remember he was disarmed?

@@nicola6530 Book excerpt: Harry made up his mind in a split second. Before Snape could take even one step toward him, he had raised his wand. “Expelliarmus!” he yelled - except that his wasn’t the only voice that shouted. There was a blast that made the door rattle on its hinges; Snape was lifted off his feet and slammed into the wall, then slid down it to the floor, a trickle of blood oozing from under his hair. He had been knocked out. Harry looked around. Both Ron and Hermione had tried to disarm Snape at exactly the same moment. Snape’s wand soared in a high arc and landed on the bed next to Crookshanks. - in the film only Harry, somehow, blasts Snape backwards, but either way Snape's wand is laying around in the shack for him or one of the trio to pick up. Maybe Sirius picks it up to use?

@@OzunodaYes, I feel like Sirius does take it after they disarm Snape as didn't he originally taken Ron's and Lupin gave them back? I could be incorrect as I don't have the books to hand at the moment.

@@nicola6530 This would make sense, and you'd be right that Snape wouldn't have a wand to defend the trio against werewolf-Lupin. I can however bring this around to a problem I think I bring up in a review of a later film, which is why the hell, if wandless magic is so difficult that losing their wand makes them useless, doesn't every wizard have at least one spare wand on them at all times

Great video! I’m only 8 hours through so maybe you will answer this later down the line. With hindsight of how all the books ended and what information is most important do you think a condensed but accurate version of the movies was possible? Maybe if JK allowed the directors more info?
@Ozunoda
@Ozunoda 19 сағат бұрын
JK giving more info would have helped soooo much, but even without that I think the franchise would have continued to be pretty darn good if only Cuaron continued to the end. Not only did his vision and style suite the setting by far the best, but I think he's a talented enough storyteller to have improved on many of the book's short comings and contrivances. And, given how hands off Rowling was in giving them any insider info on future plot stuff, to the point of contributing to some of the negative changes they made, I don't see why she should be so against some more drastic POSITIVE changes. Having said that, the movies for the last 4 books should have all been at least 3 hours long. Much shorter than the HBO tv series will go on to be, but films are films and don't need all the books slice of life fluff to tell a compelling story. The main storyline of every book and the series as a whole, when cutting down on that stuff, isn't so complicated or dense that it can't fit comfortably into 7 or 8 LONG movies.

For some reason it's still my favorite movie in the series. I just enjoy watching it the most. Not at all a faithful adaptation, but I like it far more than chamber of secrets, which I consider the worst film, especially since it's the longest movie but shortest book.

You spend SO MUCH of your videos just recapping the movies that the videos are a chore to get through. Keep it concise to your critique man we’ve already watched the movies.

@Ozunoda 2 күн бұрын
Obviously a series comparing books to their adapted films is going to need some plot context. Having said that, a lot of my effort writing these went into keeping such recapping concise whilst maintaining the accessibility it provides to those who don't know or remember everything that happens. Also, if you hadn't noticed, a fair bit of my analysis unchronologically bounces around the series to pull context from elsewhere; not quite so straightforward as some long-form essays that do mostly recap everything as it happens.

i think the time turner stuff is more that it's a closed loop and that's just how time travel works in this universe. it's not that harry can't see himself because he might hurt himself but harry can't see himself because he didn't the first time around and you can't change the things you've already personally witnessed.

3:38:37 Yeah I think you should read about August 31st in book 5 before saying that. It might seem that way in the films, or when reading the third book, but itʼs easy for “the thing you fear most” to make it hard to do even simple things correctly. (Relatedly, I donʼt think Hermione was honest about her end-of-year DADA exam performance.) 3:41:08 I donʼt think it became a twin for his Patronus. I think it became *him.* Lupinʼs Patronus is a true wolf; hers would be a specific werewolf.

Even with Prisoner being my favorite book and movie, it makes no sense once the rest of the series is taken into account. Peter’s escape should in no way stop Sirius from clearing his name, as you still have the options of Veritaserum, Occlumency, and the Pensieve to determine the truths that were discovered in the Shrieking Shack.

Portkeys make sense because wizards of all ages were headed to the Quidditch World Cup, and in Deathly Hallows, we learned that some kids might be too young to do Side-along Apparition. I suspect that’s why Lily didn’t try that with toddler Harry! We also know from Arthur that a lot of adult wizards find Apparition too dangerous because of splinching, and they never get their license. We do know that there is a Dept of Magical Transportation that monitors the Floo Network and the use of Portkeys. Cho’s friend Marietta’s mother works for that department. Aside from that, if Fake Moody made Harry randomly disappear at any point during the school year, it would be a big deal. That was the entire point of using the Triwizard Tournament as a cover.
@Ozunoda
@Ozunoda 8 күн бұрын
I still think portkeys are a bit of a shaky idea; likely to cause more trouble than they're worth for something as widespread as people traveling to the world cup, compared to, for instance, building a bunch of floo network ports for people to teleport to straight from their homes or from public ports. It's used in the world cup because that's the setup Rowling decided for the magic's use to get Harry to the graveyard. Whilst a random 'undocumented' portkey might raise suspicions, I don't see why that should deter any death eaters from capturing someone as important as Harry. Clearly he can be killed or used in a ritual before anyone notices, or enough people to do anything about it, never mind actually finding where he was taken and going there to rescue him. Fake Moody doesn't need to maintain his cover or, as far as we know, had no plans to do so after capturing Harry, albeit it was and would have continued being a great position to assassinate Dumbledore.

In Chamber of Secrets, the teachers aren’t really being all that incompetent. They don’t know that the monster is a basilisk, and they don’t know that you can only access the Chamber by using Parseltongue in a specific bathroom. Harry keeps the voices he hears to himself on Ron’s advice, because Ron says it’s weird to hear voices in the Wizarding World too. That’s why Hermione and then later Harry and Ron were the only ones who could piece it together. They had all of the pertinent information. A bigger plot issue might be that Dumbledore never asked Myrtle how she died, but we also know from later on that Myrtle didn’t always stay at the school. She was haunting and harassing a girl who made fun of her for years, and showed up at events outside Hogwarts to that end until the Ministry forced her to stay at Hogwarts. It’s a bit shaky, but it’s possible that Dumbledore stopped considering the Chamber by the time Myrtle was forced to stay at Hogwarts. Tom was already in his power, Dumbledore knew he was the Heir, and he also knew he wouldn’t let Tom chill in the castle long enough to attack Muggleborns. I think most adult Wizards probably never learned to brew Polyjuice potion and might not even know what it is. It isn’t something they learn in class until NEWT level, which means if they didn’t pass their Potions OWL, or if they choose not to continue with Potions, it would never come up. Hermione was only able to get the recipe because Lockhart gave her a permission note to use the Restricted Section. In the books, they tell us that they don’t reveal themselves because Muggles would want magical solutions to everything. I think the fear is more or less that wizards would possibly get exploited. I think there’s also the idea that magic might get weaponized by Muggles.

It seems like the story lacked focus. Was Harry unable to be killed bc he was a Horcrux and the first death returned him to normal humanity? Or bc he was the master of death with all three Hallows? Was Voldy unable to kill people bc Harry died to protect them or bc the Elder Wand rebelled against him? Rowling didn't seem to have one answer. It seems like she's trying to say the Deathly Hallows don't even matter... if Harry was a Horcrux, Voldy didn't use any of the established methods of destroying one to kill him?

I agree that there are some things that don’t make sense to me or could’ve been done a lot better had they have time to put the extra effort in. I’m not saying they were horrible decisions, but even accounting the smallest details is what separates the legendary adaptations like Lord of the Rings or Dune, to what’s created just for entertainment. And Harry Potter rides the line a little too tight. So I think I have a solution for this problem. I’m making a list of very specific and nitpicking events that happened in the movies rather than just general topics and drastic changes. Here it is: 10. Have Hermione help Harry pass through Snape’s potion obstacle. 9. Have the trio not use magic outside of school unless the stories from the books calls for it. 8. Reduce the First Task and focus on Harry finding Barty Sr insane at the forest with Krum. 7. Have Barty Jr not appear in the Goblet of Fire until the trail scene and have him scared and beg for mercy. 6. Have Ron be the one to guard Harry courageously against Sirus Black instead of Hermione. 5. Have Harry not been romantically interested in Ginny until he sees her kissing Dean and show us his jealousy. 4. Cut the Burrow attack in Half Blood Prince entirely and instead show us at least 2 or 3 more Voldemort’s pasts. 3. Have Grindlewald not betray Albus to Voldemort and die protecting him. 2. Show us Harry using the Elder Wand to fix his Holly Wand. Honorable mentions: Have Wormtail die by his enchanted metal hand. Show us the flashbacks of the Marauders in the Prisoner of Azkaban. Have Barty Jr get the Dementor’s Kiss. Extend the Quidditch World Cup. Have Ron and Hagrid explain to Hermione what the term Mudblood is instead of herself. Show us Dudley’s redemption at the beginning of Deathly Hallows Part One. Keep the deleted scene of Dumbledore saying: “I’m not worried Harry. I’m with you.” 1. Have Voldemort die as an ordinary person rather than turning to ash.

They're still usable, at least as far as Krum and Harry's attempts suggest, but not as effective if the caster doesn't really want to use them. But I don't see why the mind of someone under imperius, given the order of passionately using an unforgivable, wouldn't think they want to use it. Only when the will of the victim is stronger than the will of the caster does their mind seem to resist the mind control, but whose to say they succeed in resisting before already fulfilling the task they were given.
