I have one question I missed the last time I viewed this segment. Why is it so in Latvian, that(besides a grammar quirk) so many words lose their "s" when the word becomes plural(like tirgis singular and tirgi in the plural for example) but here: one week and one day have no "s" in their singular forms and have it in the plural ??? This makes Latvian learning and understanding common words gaining an "s" in the plural in many languages. There must be a catch for I do not see it.....feminine words are ending with an "a" can be added an "s" at the end for the plural form ?? In fact, in the french language, we do have a specific list of words that have a specific ending when they become plural. I'll cite an example here: "Un cheval"(singular) in the plural many are tempted to write (and they would be wrong to do so)it has "Des chevals" which for many would make perfect sense but the right answer would be: "Des chevaux". I'm still trying to figure out why French is so difficult....not just for the lengthy sentence with extra words and our many accents and many verb conjugations..and yes french is a mess to learn !!!!!!!! 🤣🤣

Thank you for your curiosity and I wish I could have the answer to your questions. In this case we need to find someone who can explain how language develops and the authority who has power to create systems of languages and create the books. Right now I don't have such people in my life. The only thing I can teach and try to explain to English speakers the how Latvian works. What I did notice every language needs to be learned, experienced, used and liked. If you have anything else to add or you might know how languages develop, please, do share with me.

Sveiki Victorija !! I'd like to take the opportunity with my comment, to wish you a happy new year !!🙏 I have a sort of request, whenever I do exercises within my colloquial Latvian study book, they ask me to follow the appropriate "Latvian declension" to write down the sentence appropriately. Now I am fluent in both French(mother tongue)and English my second. Though they are not that complicated for me since I'm using them for so many years and I'm used to them(in both) but in Latvian, declensions sort of "screwed up the deck of cards" for me(so to speak) with words so deformed for me they came barely understandable. Basically, certain words with an ending with a certain letter end with a different or with different numbers of letters according to genre(male-female) and quantity(singular-plural). Some even end differently depending on the subject(direct or indirect) or destination(Ex: Es dzivoju Rigu, Rigu changing cause Riga is the destination) and that sort of thing. I don't know if I'm "on to something" as for a suggestion for another video perhaps. Anyway, you're doing an amazing job And I love watching your videos along with my book. These are the declensions I'm referring to: nominative (nominatīvs) genitive (ģenitīvs) dative (datīvs) accusative (akuzatīvs) instrumental (instrumentālis) locative (lokatīvs) vocative (vokatīvs) Paldies !! Uz redzēšanos !! 🌞🌞🤪🤪😍😍

Thanks for your question, it seems like you are super enthusiastic human being. If you want me to do declension to any particular example, I can do and I can try to explain as much as I can as I don't know why certain rules are as they are as it is not in my power to create them. But definitely I can share my knowledge teaching and knowing Latvian language. There are some rules that must be learned, remembered and used. And here is why Latvian so difficult to learn, there are many rules and everything changes everything. What module are you studying now?

@LatvianTutor I visited Latvia in the summer of 2024 this year in July. I really loved the country and met new friends there. I visited Riga City. I visited old town riga, national library of Latvia in riga, freedom Monument, bastejkalna park and big food market near bus station in riga. I love learning new languages and cultures. So that's why I am learning Latvian. I am very much interested in travelling and geography.

I'm not a linguist but as a slavic person I just can to guess that word "lab" in phrase: "lab vakar" (good evening) might has a connection to russian (and other slavic) words as: 1. ladny/ladnyj (good/well) - "ladnyj v'echer" or 2. l'uby/l'ubyj/lyubyj (pretty nice/beloved/...smth that sbd likes....in russian "lyuby" from word: " lyubov' /l'ubov' "- love) - " l'ubyj v'echer" or 3. l'epyj/lepy - (all previous meanings + beautiful) - " l'epyj v'echer / lepy vecher"
@LatvianTutor
@LatvianTutor Ай бұрын
I am not a linguist too and yes definitely everything is connected to everything. In real life if you are from Latvia and you are Russian, you will need months and years to learn the Latvian language, even as you mentioned in your comment, both languages could have the same roots. Practically, people from Slavic origin have difficulty learning the Latvian language and won't understand Latvian, unless Latvian language classes are taken. For English speakers it is easier. What languages do you speak?
@alexsidorov9955
@alexsidorov9955 Ай бұрын
@@LatvianTutor I'm native russian. I surprised by your words that latvian is difficult for learning for slavic nations. I guess some differences might be difficult due to "finnish" (in general, for example livonian and estonian) influence on old-latvian in past. As I know this kind of non indoeuropean influence to lithuanian language is less. This probably might be a reason why some difficulties for slavic nations exist as you said. But be honest I guess it's not too difficult, at least slavic and baltic languages have cases (Nominativus, genitivus, dativus, accusativus, ablativus, vocativus ) unlike modern english. Moreover these languages have the same roots (baltoslavic/venedic) language with the same roots of the words as I showed earlier
@LatvianTutor
@LatvianTutor Ай бұрын
Of course depending on what language to compare to the Latvian language. If you are a Russian speaker and you want to learn Bulgarian, it shouldn't be difficult at all. If you want to learn Scandinavian languages, that's a different question. If you are learning Chinese or Hindi as a Russian speaker, that's a very different level of difficulty compared to Latvian. There are other factors such as real life applications and usage of Latvian. Many citizens living in Latvia have moved here from various countries and because their surroundings like friends, family and work colleagues speak Russian only, even if it is easier to learn Latvian than Chinese, they can't speak 🙊 the Latvian. Plus there are personal factors to each individual student like accessible time, memory and discipline. For sure I can agree with you that any language can be learned, and the Latvian language too and for some it is easier than others.

Probably, if we will take each world's language we can find words, which sound similar or even are pronounced the same way with similar meaning or different. Thank you for giving examples, it is interesting and useful to know. @@LatvianTutor I've just found your channel so I didn't start learning yet. I actually find this language beautiful and wish to know more about it. Moreover it's one of the most ancient and conservative languages ( as well as lithuanian) among other european languages. Even slavic ( closest to baltic) languages unfortunately lost some ancient forms and variation of the words when latvian and lithuanian saved it regardless the finnish (livonian and estonian) influence on them.
