Thanks! I see what you're saying. The second A unit is nice, but I figured the single A was all I needed to run the boxcars. I think that they look quite good, hauling the boxcars and the unbroken lines are pretty clean looking. I don't have a second A or even a B, for the Southern. Some extra information on the trains. The outer loop is led by my MTH Rail King Southern Ps-4 Pacific, which usually heads my AMT Southern Crescent set. It has whatever Southern region cars that I have, with an FEC caboose, since I don't have a Southern one. The middle loop has a 2026 leading, with a modern-era Pennsy tender, with all Northeast and Great Lakes region boxcars and a Pennsy smoking caboose, which obviously quit the habit, as it doesn't smoke, anymore. The inside loop is led by the FARR Santa Fe 8900, with all of the railroads from Chicago westward. The 8900 has a nice whistle, but KW's whistle lever doesn't work. All in a day's work.

Some info on the trains. The outside loop has the MPC 8370 NYC F3, from the 1983 20th Century Limited Set, with all modern boxcars, from MTH, K-Line, Williams, Lionel LTI and LLC. The middle loop has the 2026, from my brother's original 1948 set, with a couple of 6464 cars and a pair of pre-war, carryover cars, the PRR Automobile Boxcar and gondola, from 1946-47 and the 2472 caboose. The inner loop has my brother's original #41 Army switcher, with the operating boxcar and brakeman car, with the 6257 SP-style caboose. The #41 basically tires out, after a couple of times around the layout, but it's a trooper.
@ozarkmidlandsouthernrailway21 күн бұрын
@@johnandrus3901 Thanks for all the info. I couldn’t tell for sure, but was thinking perhaps the 2026 was a 2035. Do you actually have an idea of why the #41 tires out. Some sort of mechanical problem, worn parts. I don’t know just figure you might. I enjoyed seeing you trains running today.
@johnandrus390121 күн бұрын
@@ozarkmidlandsouthernrailway I don't know why it tires out, Bill. I serviced it earlier this summer. The commutator surface is in good shape I put new springs in to hold the brushes. I cut a spring in half, that came out of a light socket. Maybe, they are too long or too heavy duty? The brushes were a bit worn, but seemed OK. The pressure from the new springs may be wearing them out. Not sure, really. It ran quite fine on my inner loop, when it only went around the town. Hopefully, I'll figure it out. I run the 2026 the most, because it smokes way better than the others. I really need to service the other's smoke units. My MTH Pacific smokes real good, too, but it didn't fit with the theme of the video. I'll change things up, for the next one.🙂

@@johnandrus3901 I read your reply with interest especially about #41as there was a time years ago when my focus was on post war trains. While I now operate almost entirely command control equipment, I still really appreciate the post war trains. Is the motor overheating in a big way? I think focusing on the brushes and springs is the way to go. You might try just simply replacing both with new ones and see what that does. I have a friend who repairs Lionel post war equipment and will ask him what he thinks the issue could be. Take care. Bill PS I'll look forward to seeing your next box car video.

@@johnandrus3901 How are the rolling qualities of the AMT trucks compared to (postwar) Lionel? I always heard they didn't roll well. Or is it that they need periodic re-oiling?
@johnandrus390124 күн бұрын
@@RailRide The roll fairly well. You do need to keep them lubed, now and then. I'm thinking of going to a silicone spray lube, which dries quickly, as I don't really like getting lube getting on the tracks, which happens when you lubricate axles and bearings. The wheels are just a shade smaller in diameter than Lionel, but the tread is a tad wider. The truck side-frames are each separate pieces and hinged in the middle, so they are very forgiving on uneven track. The draw-bars are attached in the center and move separately from the truck. Their simplicity makes them easy to work on. The one major thing is that the cars are quite heavy. The frame is a separate casting, as are all of the pieces of the shell. Sides, doors, ends and roof. They're solid and can take a fair amount of abuse. So, all-in-all, the weight is the biggest factor, as far as pulling a long train goes. Sorry about the long-winded reply. I do tend to get going, when I talk about AMT passenger cars. I wish that I could just send a picture. Maybe I'll do a video on taking them apart and servicing them. Either way, thanks for the comment and question. It is much appreciated.
@RailRide23 күн бұрын
@@johnandrus3901 No problem with the length of the reply, it pretty much answered all the questions I may have had about them. Also I write replies that long all the time :D Every so often I see these at various shows and I think of how these cars would look with the roofs polished with some _Nevr-Dull_ then replacing the bulbs+frosted windows with overhead LED's and scratchbuilt interiors, but imagining the amount of drag with a full set of each car type sort of acted as a reality check. I sometimes wonder how the trucks might accommodate a ball-bearing upgrade, but that would likely require shop tools (that I don't have room for), to alter the sideframes. (also, adding to my collection is like a game of _Tetris_ now, so I'm being really choosy as of late)
@johnandrus390123 күн бұрын
@@RailRide I use Simonize on the roofs, whenever I feel the need. Turtle Wax is fine, also. Only use plain wax, no polishing type of wax or compound. The sockets for the bulbs are built into the chassis, but they don't stick-up too far, so you can get around that. I have 45 AMT passenger cars, so I would have to upgrade to LED's, over time. I've pulled ten of them, with a post-war F3. An upgrade to LED's would reduce the amperage that they draw, so the transformer would have a bit more amps, for the locomotive. With a good, dry lube and the reduced current from the LED's, I think that there would be no problem running a full consist. There are nine cars to each set and I usually only run six. Sometimes seven, but rarely. The locomotives handle that many, with no problem. If you find a handful of them for a good price, grab them.
