Thanks! Well, I got it completely dead. This used to belong to Tandyn Almer and I ended up with a number of his old broken stuff including some Studers, a Siel DK70, Kawai K4r, and this CS. Some tech (and I think I know who) made a modification to the memory circuit for reasons I can't begin to fathom. This failed and caused a massive cascade failure that blew hundreds of components--I had to replace nearly 300 parts in here! Once I got it running I noticed one of the memory ICs was extremely hot and eventually found the mod this guy had made. Since then it's been running perfectly. The good news is that it was all off-the-shelf components that got fried--all of the custom Yamaha ICs like the VCF were spared. Cascade failures are not uncommon in vintage Yamaha gear, so I did replace the PSU with a modern switching unit. It's more reliable and will shut down if something's wrong rather than pumping voltage when it's on fire. So as long as you don't get one that was abused by a Beach Boys-adjacent songwriter then you should be fine.

@@mphtower thanks. good to know. thinking about buying one and then I read how parts are increasingly difficult to source etc.. would need to fit a midi kit. got me wondering if I wouldn't be better off buying modern...
@mphtower6 күн бұрын
@@edenhunter9904 Well, there's a secret I should be reluctant to share because it means destroying some otherwise good instruments, but... You can get most of the unobtainable parts for free. Yamaha Electones organs of the same vintage use the same custom Yamaha ICs. You have to do some research to find them--I haven't completely cataloged everything. But here's an example: Rather than pay $300 for an iG00153 VCO you can find a D-85, often for free. And then you also get a ton of other useful parts including hardware, some BA617s, an STK amp chip which goes for a fair bit, etc.

The compaded format used for recording and playing these (code/decode, a bit like riaa does to vinyl recordings) to optimise the audio is called Ulaw (i think the u is a greek mu in fact) every unit using this ulaw treatment will work fine with any eprom recorded with this epb blower (got one lately i came back here to recheck before teting because i had to change my regulators on it, hope i wont have to go for more problems...). About every high end american brand drum machinme of that era (the firsty series of digital drum machines using sample) will be able to use your epb blowd eproms: Linndrum, sci drumtraks, oberheim dx and dmx. the exeption in the lot is the e-mu drumulator, they had theyre own way to do it (and later they mastered sampling vbefore most a dem). just to add a little knowledge for those interested in the topic, in nowadays you canbuy eprom (and other chips) burners for 50 bux brand new, they take some time to learn to use but we live in the era of communication right? then you can burn ytour eproms for a bvuch of units, samples or even firmwares. i will suggest going on the "electric druid's" website to read his article on the topic of digital drum machines, if you want to dive a bit deeper intoo what usefull trix you could learn regarding that technology, wich imo give the best drum results sonically. thanks for the vid mate.

Hi great video:) tell me do you know if you can use any sds emprom/chips in a SDS1 - example will a sds9 chip work in a sds1 drum pad? Thanks
@mphtower3 ай бұрын
Yup! They're all interchangeable from that era including the SDS7. Just remember to flip the EPROM Type switch to the right setting. (Nothing bad happens if you don't, it just might loop one time or play half the sample).

Oh good! I hope she gets better and this all passes as a bad memory. Fortunately, I've had very few lingering effects (my eye gets a little wonky still but it's not a problem). Certainly at the time I made this I had no idea how long this would be sticking around, which was quite scary.

Nice! Yes, the EPB is quite unexpectedly valuable at the moment. Honestly, I'm not sure why. The pots are hard to find, but the knob caps are still available.

@@mphtower hey man, in case you want to sell or repair this unit, please feel free to get in touch, i'm working on mine i bought "as is" for 400 bux (i'm an audio electronician, or else i would'nt of done it), in fact i came back here before testing it after putting new regulators (there was no -15v out of the 7915, hope it the only provblem, seems like a chip was replaced in the past, the seller got it from a pro studio's ayuction sale in california, so for now i'm pretty confident lol). if you want to sell it (or swap maybe?) i'm interested. If you want to repair it yourself and have a question maybe i'de be happy if i can help. and if you would like to have it repaired (i'm in france though), if you are in europe rather, i might be the person that could do it for you. I bought a few units latyely (simmons epb and sds-9, sci drumtraks...), all having to be refurbish a bit, to study that technology. that means that weather it may be for chatting about the topic, or putting my hands in these, i'm pretty motivated...

How would you diagnose the pitch and mod wheels if they are aligned properly and receiving and sending voltage changes in their proper 0-5v range but not affecting the sound at all?

Yes - very nice patches! I used to have a CS70M in the early 90's that I remember buying for £600 I think! but before I could get my teeth into it the synth was stolen from my car 😥 My hope now is that Cherry Audio concentrate really hard and make a combination synth that emulates the CS70M, 40M etc... as I don't think that the CS80 VST has the characteristics of your 40M or how I remember the 70M as sounding?

Great review and song for a great little unit! Simmons seem to have squeezed about the most out of one short clap sample with this machine, apart from dynamics...
@mphtower Жыл бұрын
Right? It does do a lot with very little. It can get more dynamics than I showed if you use an appropriate trigger. I didn't feel like going through the effort to hook this up to my Simmons MTM, but that could apply velocity sensitivity to the Clap Trap. It only affects the VCA, as far as I can tell, though.
