The most beautiful version of this tune is on the live album “Oscar Peterson in Russia” (which actually is a concert recording from Tallinn, Estonia) where he plays the beautiful tune as an encore. ❤

Most certainly one of the most prodigious talents in the history of Music. There is only one every century. This is a phenomenal transcription. I am only a modest musician- accordion not piano unfortunately- but I know how to read music. I bow down in humble respect for the tremendous job you have done. Thank you so much for sharing. Now here’s a guy who barely knows his way around a piano. Clearly Oscar didn’t know what he was doing, had no swing, no imagination, and certainly no fingers. You can hear him struggling with the chord changes and obviously couldn’t remember the melody. Also the scale playing is quite rudimentary and probably not his strong suit. It’s truly unfortunate to hear him play with so much hesitation, but I’m sure he could’ve gotten better if he had worked hard. Maybe if he had only played in C major all the time he might have made a better showing. It’s too bad: he could’ve really made something of himself. I guess we’ll never know…

Totally agree! He was truly and definitely the Florence Foster Jenkins of the piano.

Lovely. His left hand tenths are a tribute to the big hand, and support everything perfectly. Much more accessible and playable than the Tatum transcriptions--not taking anything away from Tatum's genius.

I love Oscar -- he's been my gold standard for decades -- but my one criticism of him is that he tended to overdo it with the runs and other keyboard pyrotechnics on these ballads. This is supposed to be a tender piece, but he, like Tatum, "tramples" all over it, putting virtuosity first, which destroys the delicate feeling the piece is supposed to have.
@mollegiante10 ай бұрын
Yes, you are right. Oscar can sometimes be "too much of a good thing", especially with his big finales. But I believe jazz musicians are entitled to turn a standard broadway song upside down. "Lady be good" was supposed to be tender and slow and just listen what Ella did with this one!

Breathtaking - had the privilege to watch P. Live in concert several times before his stroke- even for me as a hobby pianist, who played several Chopin etudes, his virtuosity was unbelievable. The recordings in Schwarzwald (Black forest) Germany done by Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer from the former MPS label are the best of all his recordings. The piano sounds absolutely realistic and P. Is at the peak. There are so many beautiful pieces in those almost 10 LPs. The best swinging piece of those is „A Foggy Day“. Also absolutely stunning transcription!! Congratulations!
@mollegiante10 ай бұрын
I agree - the MPS Albums are his strongest albums. I heard him perform twice before and twice after his stroke. Unforgettable (The last occasion - 2005 in Perugia - is not a happy memory). Have to check out "Foggy Day" again. Thanks!

@@mollegiante I watched Peterson in concert 3 times in Hamburg before and one sad time in Wiesbaden after the stroke. Since the mid seventies I am a big fan of Peterson. In 2002 it switched almost completely to Fred Hersch. He is my fixstar since then, I visited 8-10 concerts in Berlin (before the coma), 2 in Florida and the rest in West Germany. He is an absolute genius. His improvisation skills are a complete mystery for me. Could I buy one or two of your transcriptions?

@@Jazzillions I heard Peterson in Hamburg twice - so we must have been at the Laeisz-Halle together. Funny! I love Hersch as well, but heard him only twice live (once in in the Hamburg Fabrik). For getting the transcriptions have a look here: www.patreon.com/Mollegiante/shop

One of my favourite by Red. He must have liked that tune a lot as he recorded it two or three times in a trio and once with Coleman Hawkins. Great work, but would be even better if you include comping behind bass solo. Cheers!
@mollegiante11 ай бұрын
You are right - but in order to really understand Red's choices in playing behind the bass line I would have to include Paul's Solo as well. Since I do everything manually and by ear that would be too time consuming. I have to wait for retirement in order to be that scientific....
