Interesting conversion. After watching a lot of generator repair videos, I was under the impression that you would need a tri-fuel carb to really achieve this conversion. You also mentioned the expense of a 3/4” quick connect kit. Amazon has these for about $50 and they come with a quick connect and 2 fittings (one with male end and one with female end) which would have eliminated the need for the 3/4” nipple you used. Wondering if that snorkel end should have passed thru the hole in the butterfly flap on the carb - maybe would have allowed the flap to work correctly? Most dual fuel gens have a fuel selector knob that ties into the electronics some how - wondering what effect not having one does?

I appreciate sharing your actual experience, problems and all. From MN and needless to say I am also thinking workarounds for freezing temps, snow, and ice. How did you solve access to the panel (or maybe you haven't had the chance?) - a small roof/shield? I'd also like to see a reference or hear more about that power usage sensor. It looks pretty handy. One last question. I've looked at a couple other videos from you as I am also installing the snorkel for NG. You went with gasoline, and I am wondering if you hadn't had the NG system hookup yet? Thanks
@jonathanDIYsАй бұрын
@@steve8189 hi, thanks for commenting! We don't have freezing rain too often in Texas, so I didn't want to put in the effort to put up any permanent solution. I most likely would just cover it up with a tarp or unlatch the panel and to keep it slightly ajar the next time freezing rain comes. The remote power monitor is the Sense system, but with how expensive it has gotten, I'm not sure I would still purchase it today. There is another one on Amazon that is cheaper and gives you more sensors to monitor each branch. I went with gasoline because of the power strategy I have in place - anything outage less than 4 hours, I have plenty of gas to run the system. Since my NG hookup isn't permanently set up, i save my NG for the long outages. It is a pretty big hassle for me to pull the 80ft NG hose out of storage and hook everything up. It is exactly why I got the motor snorkel so I can have the flexibility to use gas, propane or NG as i have available or is convenient for me.

@@jonathanDIYs That plan makes sense. I am building a plan with a little more depth in it depending on certain variables. Next year includes moving the generator out of the garage to a storage area which can double as a sound dampening space. I haven't worked out the details but want to consider a Johnson controller to activate a fan (or continue allowing the fan to run) while or after the generator has been running and the room is still very warm. It does have an electric start so I'd need to make sure the charge controller is part of the solution. One issue that is not working is the Grid power sensor. It is supposed to activate an alarm once grid power is restored and detected which would tell me to shut the generator down and switch back the interlock. The problem I am having is the alarm is constantly going off regardless of the state of power, or not.

At least afterwards, you have a tool that you can use for diagnosis and other repairs.

2.) The initial starting delay could also have been caused by the need to purge air out of the regulators and fuel hose. That's typical for any natural gas or propane fuel hose assembly when it's first put together - you have to run all the air out of it and that can take a moment before an engine or burner lights up. This was especially noticeable years ago when gas appliances had standing pilot lights. One would have to wait a bit before the air was pushed out of the lines and gas finally made it to the pilot orifice.
@beltrams2 ай бұрын
The direction in which you wrap with the thread wrap tape sort of matters. Ideally, you wrap in the direction that you are going to turn the male fitting after attaching the two pieces. This is so the exposed, cut end of the tape is pulled further tight as opposed to the male fitting trying to unwind or bunch up the tape end. In practice, I've never seen much difference, but this is what most plumbers say and it definitely can't hurt things to pay attention to this. You may have paid attention to this on your joints, but it wasn't always clear in the video.

I was wondering if you were going to mention the price of the hose. I don't remember the length of mine but I certainly remember the cost. $430. for a 3/4" I.D. custom length hose. It's an oddball length because I bought exactly the length I needed. The funny thing is my brother wasn't about spending that kind of money so he bought a 3/4" decent quality garden hose, cut the ends off and has been using that. There's very little pressure in a gas line so it works just fine.

Hi Fauxque5057, thanks for commenting. That definitely works in a pinch, but I couldn't ever do that as I want everything to be properly rated for the application. I definitely will give props to your brother for thinking outside of the box! My hose was a mod podge of hoses I found from a surplus supplies store. I think it ended up being about 85 ft in length for around $200. It has been a while since I purchased it, so I don't recall.

I had to temporarily relocate my 125 gallon propane tank away from my house when I did some foundation work and put a length of garden hose spliced into the feed pipe between the house and the tank. I had cut, clean ends on both ends of the garden hose and used stainless steel, screw pipe clamps to secure each end of the hose. It easily held the 11 WC with no leaks for a few weeks, but I wouldn't leave that around permanently exposed to sunlight and other weather.

@jonathanDIYs2 ай бұрын
It depends on your gas service. If you have standard 7" water column pressure, you don't need a regulator. (About 27" WC is 1 PSI) If you're running propane which is stored 100-200PSI, you definitely need a regulator. If your utility company is running "high" pressure like 2PSI, you need one. A lot of people do not realize there can be a significant amount of carbon monoxide accumulation in the attic when they run their generator close to the house or in a narrowed fenced area close to the house. The ventilation soffits under eves of the house to help cool the attic can draw up the exhaust/carbon monoxide into the attic and then inside the house. This past winter the news reported the death of a family and pets due to carbon monoxide poisoning. The generator was near the side of the house in a narrow gated alley area. They determined the carbon monoxide accumulated in the attic from ventilation soffits. Please keep your generators approximately 20 to 25 from the home and in a well ventilated area. Always good to have carbon monoxide detectors in multiple areas of the home when using natural gas appliances as well as a generator. Houses in the past 30 years are much more energy efficient compared to the past. Older houses can be drafty if they were not modernized. This did help prevent carbon monoxide accumulation because fresh air was always coming into the home.
@jonathanDIYs3 ай бұрын
This is really excellent advice - you totally lose any value with a generator if you end up ending the lives of you and your family. As a precaution, I never run my emergency generator setup while I am asleep because as you stated, carbon monoxide can build up especially when you have it unattended. I also make sure I have carbon monoxide detectors in all the bedrooms. Thanks for sharing and I do hope everyone exercises safety and caution when running emergency generators in a temporary setup like mine. There are certainly risks you have to be aware of and steps that you need to take to stay safe.

For the price of the Easy Start; which is no longer selling the smaller ones, I would like to have more data. Like... How much electricity is it going to save me? If it doesn't then how many years is it going to add to my A/C unit? Don't have answer to these questions? Then just so I can use a smaller generator is not a good investment criteria. Easy Start priced themselves out of the market buy just selling the commercial units only. End of story. Or better yet get a split cooling unit that has a heat pump instead!
@jonathanDIYs3 ай бұрын
Hi Teddy, thanks for commenting! As far as I have observed, the easy start does not save ANY electricity. Theoretically, the A/C unit should last longer, but I think it probably is only extending the life of the capacitor or what not. The only reason why I got it is to run a smaller generator... For me, a requirement was to run an inverter generator - I have sensitive electronics that would not work on regular generators. The math added up as follows: Generator: $900 vs $2500 or $5000 generator for 11000 or 16000 watt generator Upsizing wires: 10 gauge vs 8 gauge - $300 vs $600 I was looking at spending more than $2000-3000 more dollars if I was to just upsize my generator. Getting a easy start at $300 seemed like the better investment when considering these options. If you don't have inverter generator as a requirement or don't mind getting a bigger generator that takes up more fuel/hour, just getting a bigger generator might be the right thing for you. In my scenario, it was the most cost-efficient option.

I have a window unit I can quickly deploy into a bedroom window that I power from my similarly-propane converted Wen GN400i generator. I think it's reasonable fuelwise to run lighter loads if possible during an outage, and my little gen runs it well, along with my fridge, deep freezer, and a couple lights. Since it's 120v only, installing a generator inlet plug really isn't an option, so I just use extension cords. I want to install a natural gas quick connect next for it as I don't have but a few days worth of propane, but can always go back to gasoline so it's making it a bit hard to justify the cost. Anyhow, this little genny kept the natural gas furnace working well during the big Texas chill quite well. I'm debating on a 2nd unit for redundancy.

If you have the space and money, 2nd unit is always a good idea. I would consider a closed frame model - they're both smaller, lighter, and more quiet to run. Hi Ronald, I went with the cheapest, NEC compliant option - a backfeed breaker with a manual interlock transfer switch. As long as you do not have both the utility power and the generator power connected at the same time, you are ok. A manual interlock transfer switch physically prevents both the generator backfeed breaker and the main utility power switch from being on at the same time. I don't have a video up on that yet, but I may put one up in the future to discuss how I set that up. Thanks for commenting.
