Hauntingly beautiful but sends a powerful message. 5 voices + close harmonies = shivers up the spine. No beatboxing. They remind me of a pipe organ at the c!imax.

It's when the unusual harmonies and piano voicing that my interest is captured. It's not they style of song which I seek out; this makes it interesting.

EXCELLENT breakdown of this performance. I especially appreciated you mentioning the videography. Lighting, negative space, etc. He does all of this in his studio in Brazil. He is incredibly talented! Many thanks.

Very much liked your detailed reaction. H & F are special musicians and people! They dedicated their video for Two Oruguitas to my late husband.

Thank you again for a lovely reaction - I always learn more about the music and visuals listening to you than I would however many times I watch it. Nathan Alef recorded a number of songs with Evynne Hollens (Mrs Peter) back in the day, and also plays on the H + F version of Mary Did You Know, he makes some lovely music.

Thanks for your analysis. That was very pretty version of this song. ! I am a big fan of The Mamas & the Papas. They were known for their smooth harmonies. I remember when Mama Cass Elliot went solo & had a big hit with "Dream A Little Dream Of Me". Nice to see this song being brought back to a new generation.

When YT told me my music stats last year, metal was my most watched genre (which was as I expected); but The Hound & the Fox were in my top five most-watched artists, #3 IIRC, which did surprise me and caused me to pay more attention to what I instantly click on if I have time and headspace. Thanks McKenzie and Riley!

Thanks David. I too heard Mama’s and Papa’s version first. But I like H+F lullabies a lot. Hound Fox and Chance remind me of Peter Paul and Mary. A melancholy version.

I understand why your output is slow - this was a lovely analysis thank you! I also lovehow Layne manages to be spectacular while also never over the top - it sounds like each sound is individually analysed and deliberated before puttibg it in. And their humour. And their 🎉🎉🎉arrangements🎉🎉🎉 ye ghods. They earned an hours worth of (edited) examination. Thank you.

Lovely choice and great analysis. I'm a sucker for old-time song and dance movies, with Fred Astaire or Gene Kelly. This song evokes many good moments. Hound&Fox are extraordinaire singers.

The pounding of the piano note, the intensity and almost threatening atmosphere about it and how it drags the listener along with it and you can't break away from it, reminds me of the two chaotic orchestral sections of the Beatles A Day In The Life that climb to intense crescendos, even though the sounds are totally dissimilar.

I didn't realize it was filmed at Casa Feliz!! One of my best friends got married there :) it's beautiful 😍 . Now I have no clue how I missed that fact. Loved this analysis and breakdown

Thanks taking your time on this one - one of my fave Geoff covers. My own pet theory is the “she” may refer to his wife’s hearing… hence the ticking of inevitable loss and the breaks in the notes, the static and distortion being typical symptoms of hearing deterioration.
I love when you and Angie get to nerd out over Geoff's music, because I love to do that as well. Keep bringing her on as often as possible, and keep up the amazing analysis; articulate or not, I'm here for it every time! 😊

I've got a day on my own when my mind is too frazzled to work or do anything creative, so why not spend the best part of two hours listening to you two analysing a Geoff performance I love? No reason at all. Really enjoyed that, thanks both!

I love your shirt, David! - Thanks for this great reaction and analysis! Hahahaha your reaction to the 'shape shifting'!! I'm so glad you got to this one because it's the song with which I first discovered VoicePlay and I was immediately hooked because it's so so so brilliant! The arrangement, the singing and the comedic parts. 😍

This analysis is as exceptional as is Geoff's creation. Angie's input allows a comparison of perspectives and insights. It's almost like the tone of the song; it can never settle on one interpretation and Geoff's character can never fully resolve. Brilliant! Please bring Angie on for additional videos. While I don't have any musical background, the back and forth discussion informs my listening and viewing appreciation. I agree that Geoff's creation here is one of the most subtly intricate pieces out there. It's a gem which most of the world unfortunately will never experience.

From a "dinosaurus", most people gather this is about a woman, but if I recall correctly, Bill said it was the two drunks talking about missing the drink when they try to kick off, and the I know is aboout everyone telling them to just stop drinking and them not being able to.

i always felt that the original song was rather too bouncy for the theme of the song but Geoff has given it so much angst and passion. it's a whole new thing. But that's what he does. And he upped the number of "I know"s to even more. That "being all over the place" is just brilliant. It's how you feel in those circumstances.

What Geoff did with it? He fixed it. The original was too peppy for the words. This is a masterpiece

Thanks to both for some interesting insights! While I do sing, I never got the kind of musical education to understand some of what you’ve discussed. So a really enlightening discussion for me. I’m generally right in there with visual discussions (spent my working life in advertising), but I learned a lot about that today, too! Side note: try to remember what you said about conductors and wizards when you get to VoicePlay’s “Classical Chaos” - hint: music as magic!

Another lovely discussion about one of my favorite melancholy Geoff songs. (He does forlorn so very well.) I don't hear "and"s in the repetition section. I hear intentional stutters of "I kn-know", as though the narrative voice is stumbling over his own conflicted thoughts. Interesting how that sort of small thing can color each listener's perceptions.

When Geoff released this, that's when I found out that he can act. It's so beautifully sad, and he reflects that in his voice, but also in his movements and facial expressions. That final part in the kitchen, is amazing! Geoff's new one is Marty Robbins' Big Iron. He did a short several months ago, then decided to do the full version beginning where the short left off. Harmonies on it are amazing. Also, he wrote original music and lyrics for it.
