Man, my favorite piece of Wizardry trivia is that the co-creator Robert Woodhead (namesake of Trebor, the Mad Overlord) is licensing classic anime for blu-ray releases today. When I first sat down and watched a retrospective on CRPGs the Wizardry section had me all "wait, what, the AnimEigo guy who let us buy Bubblegum Crisis on blu-ray?"

@@PaladinProse Oh yeah, I think I checked it out earlier this year. It's very, very basic, but treating it as a relic of its time and the fact that the dungeon crawler doesn't have more story than the official background lore it's actually charming for what it is. But don't go in expecting a Lodoss or anything lol

This is amazing! I'm doing a DnD homebrew Twitch stream, my party is in The Bagman's Realm cooking in an infernal kitchen for a fight night feast to save themselves from becoming part of the menu and you just gave me the roll table to make it really shine, thanks! I love that the algorithm is recommending new channels. My upcoming campaign will have “random” encounters but they’ll be to create a plot point or resolve an unfinished one of the like.
@PaladinProse9 күн бұрын
I love that your algorithm is recommending new channels, too! I agree with your method on random encounters... If they're used as a narrative tool, that's amazing. I just have a bone to pick with random encounters that never have an impact on the overall narrative.

About random encounters, I don't agree that they are a crutch. I play to find out, and a curated list of random encounters can bring your game somewhere surprising and refreshing. People often tend to mistake random encounters with annoying, useless and stakeless combat (looking at you, Zubat caves)
@PaladinProse11 күн бұрын
Man you have no idea how long I looked for a good Zubat clip to use in this video. I totally agree they're not always a crutch, and having a more discovery-focused play style is super fun, too! The trick is using the encounter and making it matter -- not just letting it happen for filler.

Good advice! I completely agree! I use the characters motivations and wants, aka “threads “, to push the story forward. I start each session by asking the players what happened last sessions and reviewing each players threads. I think that gets us in the mindset to play.

I have concluded that you don't have to have an exhaustive list of rooms - you can simply create a list and use them for the 2/3 rolls, and stick to your 5 room dungeon concept for your 1s and 4s. You don't want them missing out the boss or the key investigation clues, so put them at 1 or 4. You could have secondary clues or other "treats" as per ICRPG in the 2/3 rooms as well, no harm no foul - and if you are tearing through the dungeon with 4s, well good for them it doesn't matter for the bulk of the adventure.
@PaladinProse17 күн бұрын
Yeah, that makes a ton of sense! Thanks for watching man.

@bjhale21 күн бұрын
Hard disagree on sticking to the five room dungeon model regardless of the actual size of your dungeon. The model is an adaptation of the five act narrative to dungeons. As such, it is linear. Well suited to one shots and those who want a very curated play experience, but if your primary enjoyment of dungeons comes from exploration, trying to make your dungeon follow the five room model will be more limiting than rewarding.
@PaladinProse21 күн бұрын
Fair take! I think the elements outlined certainly have a place in megadungeons as much as small one-shots, but there's no need to strictly adhere to them.

Great video! I love how you broke down the dungeon design process into clear steps and gave practical advice Quick question: When designing puzzles or roleplaying challenges, how do you balance making them challenging but not frustrating for players? Do you have any tips for creating puzzles that are both fun and intuitive without slowing down the game too much?
@PaladinProse26 күн бұрын
Thank you so much, man! TBH I hardly ever include puzzles because I find them so difficult to implement and I'm terrible at solving them myself. I prefer to design enemies and environments that act as their own sort of puzzle. For example in Rotten Foundations the zombies are blind, but sensitive to sound. One of my players used thaumaturgy to attract them and send them running right over a ledge into a sewer basin. That's not something I necessarily planned for in advance, but I think it's a great example of how encounters and environments can be "solved" in clever ways without having to be a straight-up puzzle if that makes sense.

Great stuff dude! Creative self imposed limitations help me finish projects and give me boundaries to work in. For my RPG I had a clear 100 page cut off for example. That forced me to make quick decisions about what can go in and what can’t. Also, missed you in Philly! Next time 💪🏼

5e is hella clunky. I am super excited for a game like this which will fix the major issues in D&D, actually. D&D combat has never been that fun, in my 15 years of playing I can remember a few decent times with 3.5 and 4e, but…I must emphasize that the game has become a mathematical anticipation and less of a real “tactical” or “cinematic” experience. We need combat to be worthwhile and the only time it’s good is when a GM makes their own rules for it to overcome the base game’s issues.
@PaladinProseАй бұрын
Can't say I disagree! Definitely stoked to see Draw Steel hit the table.
@fuzzheadwriterАй бұрын
this reminds me how when I was writing up my current D&D setting, i was going to divide kingdoms and lands by genre, and I was going to have a small kingdom be Western themed, and it would just have a lot of wizards with gun shaped magic wands always getting into cowboy hi-jinks. The concept still lives on a bit because the urban gnome kingdom has the patron deity as the goddess of comedy and the next door kingdom is a cursed land ruled by a vmapire lord and the counties are broken down into subgenres of horror.
