If you had a "screen", I say in air-quotes because I don't physically mean a screen, but the logic you'd use for one, as in if you have a grid of cells that are set directly by redstone instead of being a toggle, and then you just hook an observer chain to the outputs you can make that non-toggle version of a screen directly into a 1x1 cell copper bulb screen without any additional logic. If a cell is on and it turns off it sends a pulse. If a cell is off and it turns on, it sends a pulse, if the cell stays the same, no pulse. The only difficulty is in getting each chain of observers to be synchronized but outside of absolutely massive screens this isn't that bad.
