The word "adelphos/adelphoi" is the same word used when referring to a group, or many people, in other parts of the Bible, such as when it's used to refer to a group of 500 in 1 Cor. 15:6. Did Mary have 500+ children? No. Also, if Jesus had brothers and sisters, why aren't they mentioned in the account of their trip to Jersusalem when Christ was 12? Jesus would have been the oldest, so if there were other children they would have been with them. At His death, Jesus recommended His mother to St. John. There would be no reason to recommend her to an outsider if she had other sons, whether they believed in Him or not.

What about the word “friends” instead of family ?
@missinglink_eth2 ай бұрын
Do you think bringing blood brothers and sisters is more important to mention in that story when Jesus was 12 that say 1) Mary was born without original sin or 2) that many remained a virgin her entire life or 3) that Mary was taken into heaven without dying on earth? All three of those things seem far more important to dogmatic doctrine than your example, yet none are mentioned. Which is correct? I don’t know but I don’t think your argument is solid.
@kevindavis3010Ай бұрын
You raise good points. I've actually preached on the passage in John about Jesus' pointing to John as Mary's care-taker. I did preach that in conjunction with Jesus seeing belief in Him as what makes "brothers and sisters, those who do the will of God," and the fact that He comes to separate families -- it is obvious that Jesus sees belief in Him as more necessary than shared blood in veins. So it's not beyond the realm of possibility that - should other brothers exists, such as "James, brother of the Lord," so Paul says in 1 Cor 15, if none of them believed in His dying moments, it's not beyond surprising to me if Jesus tapped John to be Mary's caretaker. Interesting dialogue, and I'm not at all upset if I'm disagreed with, I'm just saying it's an obvious debate. But one that need not separate in my own estimation. People are welcome to believe or not believe in the perpetual virginity of Mary, and its of no consequence. Whether Mary was "pure enough" to have Jesus, what makes 2 or more generations back full less needful of purity if that mattered to have the perfect Son of God? Just as long as Mary was pure? I don't get that, personally.

Just curious, is the brothers versus brethren language actually Catholic bias? Maybe it’s protestant bias? I’m not familiar with ancient Greek but I’d be interested to see what experts in the original languages say about the word usage.
@kevindavis30102 ай бұрын
I'm sorry if I used the word bias, it is a Catholic preference to use "brethren." It is the word adelphoi in Mark 3:31, which is the generic brethren, or "brothers and sisters," of Gender neutral translations. It is used in NT Epistles referring to the wider body of Christ (Church). However, in our text of Mark 3:31, to see it in conjunction with the word "mother," in reference to Mary, for us to say the verse to then suggest the next party Mark (or synoptic writers) intended meaning of "adelphoi" was not immediate family related could be considered a stretch, but not beyond the realm of possibility. I hope this helps.
@adamaj742 ай бұрын
@@kevindavis3010Or it could just mean Mary was with Jesus' followers/disciples, which is the case in other parts of the Gospels. A group of people followed Jesus around. They were His "brethren". Mary was with Jesus/them.

Hi! I'm actually using my husband's phone now, so different name ... but I have been spending time whenever I can trying to find a study Bible in a translation without the God-awful "brothers and sisters" replacing "brothers." I purchased a super cheap NIV somewhere in the neighborhood of 30 or so years ago (I think I paid $4.99 or $5.99 for it at the time) and I wanted to replace it with a nice premium copy, but horror of horrors, there is was ..."brothers and sisters." I started researching. It appears that the majority of Bibles have gone this sad route. I stumbled across the BSB in my recent searches, and this video of yours tonight. Do you still like this Bible? It looks like it's maybe had a second printing and some new leather colors since you did this video (yes, I hanker for premium leather), so do you still like this Bible and is there anything I should know that was unknown to you in this video? Thank you in advance 🙂
@kevindavis30107 ай бұрын
The Berean Study Bible updated to the name Berean Standard Bible, because the "Study" was throwing people off. If you purchase one all you get is a translation with a few footnotes for translation notations but no study notes like an old NIV Study Bible. If you want something close to an NIV84 that has traditional pronouns, the only translation I know of that fits that and has a study Bible is an EHV Lutheran Study Bible, available at NPH.net. The Lutheran organization that puts it out is conservative, and won't have super off notes. An eBay purchase of either an HCSB Study Bible or NIV Study Bible 1984 might run you just as high for a good copy. If you've never checked out the ESV Study Bible its really good, and though the ESV might be a slightly harder read than the NIV84, it's still got traditional pronouns and it's not impossible to read. Hope this helps you on your journey!

@temiongcecilio At one point I owned all the editions of the NIV, including the original, which was later given to a die hard NIV fan. I bought the 1984 version about two years ago, through Amazon. I recently replaced this with a 2017 version of the CSB. It seems to be more accurate. KJV array, is almost complete (just can't afford an original 1611), as well as an array of Catholic versions of the Bible. Among other oddities is a 2005 edition of the NCV, which took me several years to warm up to.
