@Lush_Acre_Homestead21 күн бұрын
@melodylamour6123 I have no idea why these got so big. I've grown this variety, Lucillus, before, and I've fed the same for about 5 years. The only thing I did differently this year is I went HEAVY on worm castings. I mixed them in at planting and applied them every couple of months. I'm amazed, and the chickens are thrilled. 🤣💚

@melodylamour6123 I'm jealous! I haven't figured out how to worm farm outside in our heat yet, so I have to buy all of my worm castings. I'm excited to produce my own at some point. I've noticed a lot of positive changes since I started using them. Less pests, better root systems, no grubs, better good bugs. My ladybug population was almost non-existent last year, and this year, I had them everywhere! 💚

I hate powdery mildew. So annoying
@Lush_Acre_Homestead21 күн бұрын
@CampfireRachael Same, it sucks! But I'd much rather deal with it in November than early in the season where I have to treat or risk losing plants. Luckily, in our climate, powdery mildew is really only an issue in late fall and early spring. We have about 7 months where it is just too sunny and hot for it to take hold. 💚

They say if you paint your hardware cloth black, the wire will almost be invisible from afar, and you can see inside the coop a lot better.
@Lush_Acre_Homestead26 күн бұрын
@@theluckytundrapup2690 We've discussed doing that, but we have an issue with birds. We've had a couple of doves break their neck flying into the hardware cloth. I'm worried we'll have more birds fly into the wire if it is less visible. 💚

@Lush_Acre_HomesteadАй бұрын
@Kevin-ul8ux I'm growing a ton, so I can try a few different things with them. This one, I ate raw, and I do want plenty for salads and raw eating. I'm pickling some, using them in my kimchi, roasting some, using some in a hot sauce. I'm growing a Wasabi mustard that I'm using for a stand-in for actual wasabi to make a paste, but I might try pureeing a batch up to see how it does for a paste. That's a great idea, thanks! 💚

Are these plants undesirable?
@Lush_Acre_Homestead2 ай бұрын
Yes. The China Berry drops seed pods that are toxic, and our dogs have eaten a couple. The palos verde and mesquite are great for shade and nitrogen fixing the soil, but once they reach a certain size and age, their thorns get to be 1"-2" long and very sharp. They shed them, and we've had them go through our shoes as well as in our dogs' feet. We only keep them outside our fence line, not in our yard. 💚

@brianroberts815 It would! While we don't have any Kudzu here, as you can see we have a TON of Bermuda grass, like half of our acre is covered in it. Luckily, it isn't as invasive as Kudzu, but the roots still get around 6 feet, and so far, the only way I've been able to remove it without having it pop right back up the next day, is digging it out with the pickaxe. Here in the Vegas Desert, with our Caliche clay, the pickaxe has become my go-to tool. Do you have a lot of Kudzu where you are?💚

If you let some go to seed, little birds will come pull the fluffy seeds (similar to dandelions and thistles) out and eat them all winter. It’s a bird feeder that doesn’t encourage rats! I have artichokes all over my property and I adore their massive gorgeous foliage. My biggest bush last year was about 8’ across and the tallest choke on it was at about 10’ tall. That bush made me about 20 chokes last year. We take half and leave half to the birds. We even got bushtits nesting right over the artichokes now!

@Lush_Acre_Homestead10 ай бұрын
This is actually a lightweight fleece row cover on them right now. We have aggressive birds and rabbits that have no problem eating anything they can get to, and it also keeps out other pests. I switch it up depending on the time of year. December through mid-February, I use greenhouse plastic to hold in heat, like a mini-greenhouse. I put on 90% UV cloth around mid-May, and that stays on until late August/early September. The rest of the time, these will be covered in the fleece. 💚
