I’m playing Belle at the moment and I can’t see at all why she is not feminist?? She is kind and gentle, but she’s just as much stubborn and a bit feisty. She doesn’t fit in cause she is nerdy and awkward, which makes her hard to blend in with the rest of the town. I love her, she’s so interesting to me! She’s not perfect by any means, but she’s a good person and that’s what makes the audience root for her- she literally sacrifices herself for her father, she’s brilliant just the way she is

Anyone who's been to a funeral will say, "It's not wrong to pay last respects to your loved ones." Searching far and wide just to say good-bye to anyone you care deeply about qualifies as love in my book. P.S. Snow White's appearance doesn't make her beautiful. It's her actions: From helping a baby blue bird find their lost parents to joining the Dwarfs in with their singing and dancing, and then entertaining them with a story upon their request. In short: Kindness = Beauty, not the other way around.

The most annoying scene of Emma as Belle is "be our guest", where she plays like Belle had seen furniture, dishes, and candles dancing-singing-flying all the time in her role life. That was her expression: "Oh, look at the plates having fun, again". Even if they were people, the show was amazing and she was so excited as a white wall.

First, even if Cinderella had wanted to leave, she couldn't because she had nowhere else to go before the ball. Also, some non-Disney adaptations of the fairy tale might have Cinderella living in the basement, so I wouldn't necessarily consider that quote to be in error, because perhaps they're not referring to this film. (It's worth noting that the Rodgers & Hammerstein musical adaptation, or at least the 1997 made for TV movie, also has Cinderella's stepmother locking her in another room during the fitting of the glass slipper, though this is by no means common to all of them).

I agree with you, and I will even go a bit deeper and say that they RUINED the Beast in this movie, as well. Three moments in particular that come to mind are when he takes Belle to her room after he frees Maurice, when he gives Belle the library and when he lets her go after the dance, to find her father. In the original movie, the moment when she trades her life for her father's is the beginning of the Beast's change of heart. You can SEE he feels bad about what has just happened and he gives her a comfortable room, rather than making her stay in the cell. He tries to comfort her when he sees her crying. In this one, he's not even THERE. Its Cogsworth and Lumiere who take Belle to the room, and thus, we don't get that first moment of connection. With the library is him first starting to have feelings for Belle after she brought him home after the wolves attack.. He wants to do something really special for her, because she was kind to him. So he surprises her with the library and gives it to her and she teaches him to read and its a beautiful moment. In this version, he scoffs at her love of reading (over the same book, no less, Romeo and Juliet) and then sort of tosses it in her lap, as if it was nothing. It takes away what is so sweet and romantic and special about this moment. Then they RUIN the dance scene by taking away all the buildup of having the dinner and going in to dance. And then, when the Beast lets her go, there is no moment where he stops to consider his own fate and THEN lets her go, in spite of it. Indeed, his line where he finally confesses his love for her is NOT EVEN HIS. Its given to Mrs. Potts. So, again, that moment is ruined.

Belle's reading tastes were so odd for the movie. They kept advertising how Live Action Belle was going to be more intellectual. So I thought she would be reading philosophic or scientific essays... but the writers picked Romeo and Juliet? This feels odd for she does not seem like the kind of girl who loves passionate young love stories that end in lover suicide. She comes off as the kind of person who would call them stupid. They defiantly went after recognition (as if no other literature existed but that one play by Shakespeare back then) and it's so unfitting for her. Like animated Belle would have loved the drama of a lover's suicide but live-action Belle, if they had to pick a romance by Shakespeare, should have been Much Ado About Nothing or something. They also could have had her read books by women from around that time. That would have been cool, the original fairy tale was written by a woman in 1740 and she wasn't the only female author. But I guess that would have undermined Belle's whole "girls don't read" thing if were told women wrote back then. Not that the times were without stigmas, but acting like they didn't exist in a movie promoting female empowerment to uplift a "feminist" fictional character feels so disingenuous. Why not let the movie be an opportunity to educate through Belle who could have been their biggest admirer. If Belle was a "scientist" she could have been asking if her book by Emille Du Chatelet had arrived or whatever. I wish they did more with Live-Action Belle, they kept saying she was going to be a scientist but other than a washing machine she made off-screen, it never felt like she was passionate about it. Like they did all this build-up for the "new feminist belle" and she comes off as so snobbish to me.

I really don't like that it just wasn't enough for Belle to be a nerdy, geeky, imaginative dreamer. What is so wrong about that? If Disney really wants to empower girls/women, why not reinforce that women can be anything they want, regardless of what society thinks? It wasn't always mainstream for girls to be devout bookworms and fantasy lovers. If it were, they wouldn't have had to use pen names back then to hide their identities when they wrote books. I'm sure Belle was probably inspiring to women like J. K. Rowling, seeing as how both the animated movie and Rowling writing her first book took place in the early 90s. Disney thinks that STEM = empowerment. And, sure, STEM can be empowering in its own right. However, I think it sends the wrong message. It makes it seem like if women and girls want to be taken seriously, then they can only be portrayed in a certain light. That's really messed up. Traditional women still exist. Beauty gurus/influencers still exist. Authors and bookworms still exist. Cosplayers and costume designers still exist. Socialites still exist. None of these are STEM careers, yet ALL of these avenues for women are valid. I've said this before on my channel, and I'll it again: giving female characters attributes that may be associated with men or masculinity does NOT make her more valid or worthy of more respect that other women. They TOOK Maurice's talents/abilities and gave them to Belle. That isn't who Belle was. That was her father's passion, and Belle gave him her full support. I literally JUST thought of this! You know what would have been cute for the remake and truer to Belle's personality? If she had a LAARP session with the Beast (or somehow convinced him to play along lol). She could pretend to be a powerful wizard and maybe had the Beast be a dragon, and she could have beaten the "dragon" with amazing "spells". Then, maybe the Beast could have been lightly triggered by the LAARP because it reminded him of the Enchantress who cursed him (but of course, Belle wouldn't have known that). I swear...Disney should hire fans of their original work to help them write these remakes. But ok, I'll stop there. I feel like I'm going on and on at this point. 😅😅

@@WondrousJoJo Very true, girls enjoying geeky things wasn't as mainstream as it is today. I remember being in middle school and someone asking me when I'll stop reading manga, and I thought about how grown men get to attend comic conventions dressed as Batman or Obi Wan, but my geeky interest has an experation date? I understand your perspective, it's annoying listening to people say they are promoting "female empowerment" while dissing any women who enjoy traditional girly things, are gentle, or are non-confrontational. Women should be supported in all ways, all I want from my female characters is to feel genuine. I didn't hate the idea of scientist Belle, but I understand the larger framing, especially because they promoted it as improving her. I thought Disney would preserve Belle's compassion, wonder, and wit. When I watched the movie I gave it the benefit of the doubt that those characteristics would be preserved, but they didn't, because it made Belle "submissive," and slapped a scientist attribute to call her a positive role model. AND Like seriously Submissive!? Didn't they watch the original film? First Belle rejects Gaston by tricking him into falling out of her house into the mud, when her dad is missing she immediately goes to find him, then the moment the Beast scares her shes "I'm out," Belle only gives the Beast a second chance because after he rescued her they talk and she gives him a piece of her mind about his attitude. She was all that while still being a very soft, kind, and romantic person, it was valid and she was loved for it.

When I went to Israel the first time, I went to a salon where an African Jewish hairdresser attached a dreadlock into my hair. She didn't seem to care I wasn't African. Maybe because we are united by the Judaism. 🇮🇱 When I went to Mexico, there was a Mexican hairdresser who specializes in braids and braids your hair right on the beach. I didn't get braids because I didn't want my scalp exposed to the sun. Are Black people aware the braids are popular in Mexico? 🇲🇽 After Angela Davis visited the Soviet Union, people, including my mom, started curling their hair so it would resemble an afro. They would go to the hair salon and ask for "the Angela Davis". They were not aware the afro is a popular hair style among people of African descent. No, we're not being racist. We want to connect with another culture, or we're in Mexico 🇲🇽, or we are Soviets who have never seen an African person with an afro before. 😂

I mean they are even calling braid outs mama Mia hair. Box braid , boxer braids , you even had that incident where a black woman couldn’t wear her hairstyle to work then when she went to court , the judge asked her why she wanted to look like a white actress who wore braids . They take and leave with your things even when you decide to share . Why can’t we gatekeep, everyone else does .

I think education would make a huge difference. I think it's great when black people get online and correct people when they say silly things like "Mama Mia hair," "Brain Rot," or whatever else they try to rename. I actually take no issue with black creativity being protected. Just like how other groups profit and make money off of trends associated with them, we need to do the same. Black people have to be the ones to step up and OWN the creations of the culture. We have a very unique history. I think the reason why we are often looked past compared to other groups in this country (because other non-white groups experience culture theft as well) is because we didn't migrate here and there is no country associated with us other than America. Some may claim Africa, but the reality is that we are not the same. We are an entirely different ethnicity that hasn't been associated with Africa for several hundreds of years. And even if we did identify with Africa, we have no specific country. So, since we are foundationally American, and yt folks are the dominant society of America, we are unfortunately just seen as a subset of greater America. Yt people are the "company", while we are seen as the "employees". I truly think this is why white folks have a hard time acknowledging our contributions to this nation. We have historically always been seen as the group that can easily be exploited because we have no country or nation to back us up. Japan can defend Japanese Americans. China can defend Chinese Americans. And so on, and so on. Without a separate nation of our own that can be recognized for its own culture, people will continue to take from us with no one to defend us, other than ourselves. Whatever we do in this country is seen as a service to those in power to do whatever they wish with. We literally can't stop it from happening. This is why I think it's pointless to tell other groups they can't wear box braids. I instead try to take a more reasonable and realistic approach, which is to capitalize on our own creations and have other groups come to us for those services. That way, we can at least make the majority of the money AND make a bigger name for ourselves. There is no reason for other groups to come to this country and be the biggest profiters of black-associated goods/services like wigs, weaves, nails, soul food, braids, etc. when we should have been on top of that. Now, for example, nails are associated with Asians. That should have been us, but we didn't take our own culture more seriously. So, going forward, if we want to be acknowledged for our culture, we need to start seeing more of our people taking OWNERSHIP.

You know, there's always something that's overlooked in -remakes- “adaptations or continuations” of any established IPs. Now I can go into different movies or shows that Disney, done recently. But with Beauty and the Beast (2017), this actually was where the faults are shown. Because everyone remembers the 1991 movie and just how memorable a lot of scenes were, therefore believe that bring it to live-action WOULD have the same or greater effect. But despite the director Bill Condon and writers Stephen Chbosky/Evan Spiliotopoulos keeping about about 80% faithful to the source material with it’s dialogue and plot elements (Even with the added subplots), the 2017 adaptation was still doesn't work, due to the mistranslation of CHARACTERIZATION from the page to the screen. Because the 1991 movie was by-and-large…. a character-piece. While the movie starts as a typical fairy tale set-up of a young lady discovering an enchanted castle with many under a curse, in between, is almost entirely comprised of CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT, from both the leads, and supporting characters, with their personalities and relationships being both the heart and soul of the movie. Therefore, seeing how important the characters are to the enduring success of the story, one can imagine the devastating effects that the mistranslation of characterization, even by “just a bit” can have. Now you can argue with me, but I think only Ewan McGregor (Lumiere) and Ian McKellen (Cogsworth) are the two that were the most successful in translating their characters and their personas from animation to live action. But as for everyone else, they really failed, especially the leads. With Dan Stevens he really seems both mis-casted as the Beast/Prince, but this is more due to the fact that the creators Condon, Chbosky and Spiliotopoulos really didn't understand the character. And as for Emma Watson, well to sum up in short, a lot of the choices she made to Belle end up deteriorating the story, proving that she herself doesn't the character. That being said, Watson's only half to blame for this, since it's simply a matter of fact that Condon both failed at not interpreting the characters properly and casted the wrong people for the roles. Because if one is to compare how the actors portray the characters with the original, you’d realize how much both don’t mesh that well (as if they're showing the audience a PERFORMANCE, not a CHARACTER.). I can’t tell you how many film or tv creators take so much from an original source material, yet don’t seem to really understand (Let alone care….) to whom the characters are, and are unable to communicate their underlying motivations, flaws, and nuances. Therefore, it can lead to any actions that a character commits to feel condescending or out-of-context, turning them a bit into either a passive or static character. By shifting the characterization found in the original ever so slightly, you literally sucked the heart and soul out of the entire story. CHARACTER IS STORY. The story you read, watch, or play is driven by its characters. Therefore, when Disney's adaptations fail, it's because you CANNOT keep the events of the plot, yet change the characters and expect the story to remain coherent.

*Why I like The Princess and the Frog (even if it could’ve been better so perhaps live-action or animated, just as long as the CGI is actually good or non-existent, maybe it needs a remake to objectively improve upon it as crazy as it sounds as I’m against Hollywood including how they make live-action adaptations, likely if it were made by a better company than Disney, while it doesn’t have the worst representation of people of colour which is to be expected from a Walt Disney Animation Studios films from the 1990s - 2000s as opposed to their remakes like with Aladdin and eventually Lilo & Stitch, take for instance, and the company’s older films, there are so many ideas of what they could do better with this movie that gives it a bad reputation. Maybe not entirely justifiably so, but definitely understandably so)* • Visuals (say what you want about this movie, but this is one of Disney’s best-looking films that really goes to show what they can do with hand-drawn animation that looks like it was done in the 2000s to 2010s) • Music (Never Knew I Needed by Ne-Yo, Down in New Orleans by Randy Newman and Anika Noni-Rose as Tiana in the reprise, When We’re Human, Dig a Little Deeper, people can criticize the story and see how it’s not as good of a representation of black people as ElectricDragon505 would like others to think it is) • Characterization (perhaps WDAS could have done a much better job representing black culture and being much more aware than in Dumbo with that “Roustabouts” that even after the mid-19th century, white people were prejudiced towards black people, but I dunno, I actually really like the LaBouffs in this movie because they treat Tiana who is very attractive inside and out like a friend even though they should probably give Eudora the same respects by treating her better. That and Naveen was shown, like other recent Disney Princes like Adam/The Beast, Aladdin and Flynn Rider learning to become better people over time, and the growing relationships between the Disney Princesses and Disney Princes is what I like about those Disney Princess movies of 1959-2010 compared to the first two Disney Princess movies and, of course, Frozen, where WDAS would have to turn Prince Hans into the King Magnifico of the last decade by turning them into toxic stereotypes of white men after spending the first acts unintentionally making them feel genuine. That and Ray and Louis are underrated sidekicks, and WDAS used to be great at giving us animal sidekicks!) • Pacing (it knows when to go fast to ramp up the intensity of the action, but it also knows when to stop and take a breather whenever slow, emotional moments are called for) • It was directed by RonJohn (the same duo that gave us The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Hercules, Treasure Planet and Moana, now back to ElectricDragon505, who doesn’t seem to be the biggest fan of these guys. Maybe he likes their movies, especially Moana since it was made after the Disney Renaissance where he’s shown to be less grateful for diversity when it’s not shoved in front of our faces than when it is like in Disney’s recent movies when the company had a racist, sexist history even during the olden days. But I don’t know if he’ll ever forgive Ron Clements for talking about why the 2023 Little Mermaid was pointless assuming he’s just saying that because he’d rather Ariel be white than black and as the guy who gave the remake a 6.5 which is one step away from giving it a 7:10 at worst, I expect him to be critical towards the original, as much as he doesn’t deserve to, because while as a Disney movie, he might end up saying great things about it, he might also be critical of Princess Ariel and act like unlike in the 2023 version, she’s a negative stereotype of rich white women, and agree with The Crosby Critic’s bs take on the original version of Prince Eric while giving King Triton and Ursula a pass despite doing bad things as well, it’s like he’d be excited for the upcoming Disney Junior show where Ursula will be portrayed as a good guy, but I digress) • Disney has done so much worse in recent years (seriously. I have a long, exhaustive laundry list of them, plus sometimes, even before the end of the 2000s when they made this movie I have a love-hate relationship with, they made movies that don’t hold up as well as they say like Chicken Little, Peter Pan, etc) So yeah, while I know this movie could’ve been so much better from the standpoint of the story that makes me remember objectively better movies, I do have a softer side for it more than most people because even to this day after my most recent rewatch this decade on Disney+, I did have a lot of fun with its cartoony action, so yeah, maybe I am mixed towards it, but I’d be lying if I said that I hated it.

I know this is a hard pill to swallow, but as the saying goes: “Art imitates life.” There aren’t a lot of black leaders in the world, thereby we’re not going to see a lot of that in animation. You have to have a lot more than MLK Jr, Malcolm X, and Obama to get a black father figure in a film. You’re thinking of the problem backwards: “Make role models for us in a cartoon.” You need to have real people first, and then that’s going to lead to us being inspired to make a black father figure cartoon as that’s what’s going to be representative of the culture. Only recently has the black community started calling out back dads for being mostly absent from their children’s lives.

Live action beauty and the beast annoys me in many ways, but the biggest thing that really ticks me off is how there’s no sense and purpose in the way things are planted or paid off. The washing machine for example. We see in the beginning how Belle is bullied for inventing washing machine. I assumed this was the planting of Belle’s identity (of being an inventor) as it relates to connection/disconnect from the community. AND because the castlefolks are literal pots and pans and therefore are experiencing disability in many ways, it would make total sense for Belle to later invent a much of helpful machines, including washing machine! But nope. There’s no payoff for this whatsoever and the damn washing machine is never mentioned ever again. Then we have Belle’s mom. We have a beautiful emotional scene where Belle learns that Belle’s mom “sacrificed” herself in a way to make sure Belle and her dad is safe. (At least from what I remember; it’s been a while.) A payoff. Except the audience is confused af because there was no lead up to it. Belle never had mommy issue that was the source of internal (or even external) conflict. And why would her dad keep this a secret anyways???? That your mom was too sick and she sent us away so we don’t get sick as well? It just makes no sense.
