interesting to see this from the vantage point of 2024; a Soviet Union under a leader like Gorbatchev looked far less dangerous for the survival of the human species than the current Russia under Putin; the communist leaders were in a way still controlled by the forces in the Communist party and could be removed if required (e.g., Khruschev); in contrast Putin reigns supreme; he is the most powerful Russian/Soviet leader since Stalin

Its my second month in Estonia and Im extremely proud of the country! They were the biggest and first oppressors of the Soviet regime and the amount of struggles and war they've seen is incredible!

Collapse? UNited States promised peace with treaties and a spot in the United Nations. Sign agreements to reduce Nucular increase. AND LIED! Broke treaties tried to destroy the whole country and succeeded. Too bad they regrouped and are a strong super power yet again. So it’s not a collapse it’s a con job by American That failed. Just like the 70 other regime changes by CIA across the world.

To state a few facts: Capitalism and the United States WON the Cold War while the Soviet Union disintegrated under its own weight without a single shot being fired; Socialism is the obsolete ideology that failed miserably in Zimbabwe, Venezuela, Grenada, Vietnam, North Korea, East Germany, Yugoslavia, Libya, Sri Lanka, Chile, Hungary, Nicaragua, Poland, El Salvador, Mozambique, Romania, Honduras, Mongolia, Bolivia, Afghanistan, Angola, China (which has been Capitalist in everything but name since the economic reforms of 1964 by Deng Xiaoping), Russia (of course), and everywhere else it has been tried. Capitalism continues to be the best and only option while Socialism continues to be the worst, the most failed and most lethal after having caused at least 120 million deaths in less than 90 years which would translate in more than 1 million deaths per year. BTW, how come reds keep bitching about American "imperialism" but never mention Chinese imperialism in Vietnam or North Korea? Or Soviet imperialism in Afghanistan, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Hungary, East Germany or Yugoslavia? Or Cuban imperialism in Angola, Mozambique, Grenada, Nicaragua or Venezuela? Or Yugoslav imperialism in Albania? And let's finish with the Socialist prayer: If it's a Socialist atrocity, it never happened If it happened, it wasn't that bad If it was that bad, they deserved it If they didn't deserve it, mistakes might have been made If mistakes were made, that wasn't real socialism.

Communism fell because the communist movements betrayed the working class they were supposed to represent, failing to uplift their lives to the level promised, but rather, reducing much of the working class of the Communist Bloc to slavery. The USSR could have been everything the American Dream, for example, aspires to and then some. The Russian Revolution could have been an American revolution 2.0. Instead, communist movements failed to live up to their own humanist ideals turning their backs on democracy and human freedom in favor of tyrannyand terror, which made them appear hypocritical and empty. That was why the people gave up on the Soviet experiment.

The collapse of the USSR was the greatest disaster of the 20th century ? Well Mr Putin it appears that your country and your people are kind of used to various "political disasters" since more than a century now. As Mr G.B. Shaw once famously wrote : "Communism was maybe a good idea but it started with the wrong people"

To all those who see that Russia is not continuing the stuff to this day is usually just a naive person or just simply really that dumb it is an insult to those who have tried to expose Putin and his elite and the people around him and it has become more and more dangerous how these people have really just endured this lying by people Because Putin has always used event like 911 the war and terror anything to his advantage there is a lot of people who’ve got schizophrenia who think that Putin is somehow a good guy. I have seen this from people from vadniks you know if Putin really wanted a world war he would first weaken the west and then destroy it through a series of collective actions. First use liberals in politics to weaken the west by saying that multiculturalism and diversity are our greatest strength next get the right wing toto react to this stuff, including the far right, as as pervasive that is make them think that their countries are not worth receiving because the liberals and the woke to make them more compatible with Russian demand next stabilise the west in a way that would be an uncover able in a way that would meet the worst feel that their whole life that they celebrated for years is down the drain next to basically ramp up the what’s I find troubling is there a lot of these so-called right wingers and far right wingers and extreme right wingers are actually just acceleration -ists the reacting to what Putin is doing with the left and saying look at these left wingers they are basically destroying our country which is true, but at the same time he’s supporting it by behind-the-scenes is helping these leftists gene power in a way that would seem and point that would never be discovered by anybody in a way that people would never underestimate. This is why Putin has always support Islam and I will know anybody who will try and make any excuses for this do you know what Britain will do, he will make it look like that basically this is what happens when a lot of these right wingers obsessed with left-wing and liberal politics. They think that the whole world is coming to an end and the purposely side with Russia against the liberal elite just like Dugin has always used at times to convince right wingers that Russia on their side when in reality he supports the left wing and right wing fighting each other you know the Russians realised a long time ago that in order to convince right wingers that Russia is a good guy in this conflict they would need they would rudimentary have to ramp up the left wing politics in those countries by first getting a lot of right wingers to obsess over left-wing politics now a lot of left-wingers are may disguised themselves as pro West in reality they are pro Russia. They are just disguising their pro western stuff as ways to keep people distracted on what’s really going on which is they are stabilising and demoralising society basically a lot of these western countries are copying the Russian tactics and copying the Russian laws and tactics

Gorbachev called United States and informed that Soviet Union could not pay their debt. Years of wars and Afghanistan war took a toll on USSR on their debt. United States gave Russia one billion dollars to help, but now because Putin starting a war ,it will not be forgiven and Putin just brings mor harm on Russian citizens.

There's a huge number of Russian people who absolutely loathe Gorbachev, seeing him as the one who destroyed the Soviet Empire led to the degradation of the 90s. Fair enough, but my question then is what would have been the alternative? Let's say Perestroika and Glasnost were never implemented and the social and economic decay from Brezhnev's era continued unabated. Would any kind of reform have been able to take place, or would the Politburo have covered it up until things reached critical mass and you had hordes of starving civilians in the streets demanding their heads on pikes? While Gorbachev's attempts at saving the Soviet experiment ended in grand failure, I can't help but think the alternative might have been even worse. Chechnya-style wars might very well have broken out all across the rotting carcass of the Soviet Union as central command and control broke down and the big honchos carved their own mini-empires out for themselves across the vast territories that would have been ripe for the picking. Or they might still have lingered on till the modern day, becoming little more than an empty shell of a nation much like North Korea, the misery and poverty hidden by a facade of fancy banners and columns of tanks, much like before, but taken to new extremes.

when Yugoslavia broke apart constituent republics declared independence in mostly artificial borders so constituent nations found themselves over night in foreign countries. It seems that Russia/Yeltsin accepted Soviet republic borders as new state borders thus creating chaos which is still relevant. One federation cant be peacefully disintegrated without compromises, agreements, diplomacy. Hopefully there is some future when borders will be irrelevant

Gorvachov was a mother. Can you imagine today if a separatist region of China were to look for its independence and have the passivity and approval for meeting of Xi?..Can you imagine that?..Unthinkable, with a strong leader. But possible with a mother like Gorbi.

These were supposed to be sovereign governments. If you just crush any resistance, you reveal yourself to be the bastard people suspect you might be, and your empire can crumble even faster. Also we don't have to guess what Xi would do since Taiwan is de-facto independent and Xi and his predecessors just have to stand by and watch.

The fact is.... During the collapse of the Soviet union, only one old bolshevik was alive to see the demise. His name was Lazar kaganovich. He was the last surviving Old Bolshevik from the time of Vladimir Lenin & was in the inner circle of Joseph Stalin along with Vyacheslav Molotov (the guy behind Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact )
