Nice one!. I won't ever fly free flight anywhere near trees after loosing a model high up in a hoarse chestnut tree in the local park, it stayed up there for about six months totally recked it.

Ah, the subtleties and nuances of rubber powered free-flight abound. Firstly, there are much higher quality kits than this available. Dumas has been my source for quite some time, now. All of their kits (and there are many) are designed by the prolific designer Pat Tritle. This is high-quality traditional model building with laser cut technology. They are a joy to build.

Quite normal size prop for a free flight rubber powered model.

We appear to live in roughly the same geographical area and the weather has turned WINDY and WET. I love that little plane. You should absolutely take it to Muncie next summer!

THanks! I don't mind telling you I'm in southern MD, not any flyers here it seems except me. Muncies quite a hike for me! Cheers!

It is a 5-hour drive for me. Far, but do-able occasionally.

010 there is extra mass at the tail; in the over-tall vert-stab and the huge elongated root.! d
@skipstalforce22 күн бұрын
The short tail moment requires extra fin area to balance the side surface area and prevent any hint of dutch roll which is a drain on efficiency. The enlarged dorsal separates air flow around the tail more efficiently, resulting in less drag and additional stability. In addition. I was concerned that the long, higher aspect ratio wing might require more rudder area. Hope this answers your question. CHeers!

Wow, 70 feet! I have a 40 foot ladder and 30 foot pole and still can't get things from 70 feet up because I can't safely go to the top of the ladder. Sometimes I can use a kite to dangle a hook on the end of a line, but it is tricky. Could lose a kite, too! By the way, you can estimate the height by pacing it off. Go across to the other side of the field, at least several hundred feet. Hold a stick at arms length, match the end of the stick with the airplane and your fingers at the ground. Tilt the stick horizontal and note two objects on the other side of the field, same distance as the tree. The tree is convenient. Pace off the distance between those objects.

My links have been deleted. Google search jackite and uline for telescoping poles. First is 31 feet, $100, second is 49 feet, $3,000.

Just couldn't resist the urge to perch herself in the tree, I like to think maybe some kid will find it and have some fun later....
@aeromodeller1Ай бұрын
Before a flight, you make a flight plan. That includes a weather forecast. Get the size of the field from the Google Map. Locate the most upwind point on the field and the downwind distance. Calculate the time to traverse from the windspeed. Keep in mind that your plane flies in a circle, know the diameter, subtract that from the distance. From the expected time of flight, you can figure whether the plane will leave the field. From the size of the field and wind speed you can determine whether it is a a one minute filed, two minute field, etc., and wind your motor accordingly. Given the variability of wind speed and direction, this is still risky. All bets are off if there is thermal activity. A strong thermal can turn a one minute flight into a ten minute flight. I generally don't fly if the wind makes the prop spin faster than it does on full turns.

I was depearate for the maiden, I knew better, and took a chance, It's my fault.
@aeromodeller1Ай бұрын
@@skipstalforce No fault, I've done the same thing, but we learn from our experience.
@aeromodeller1Ай бұрын
Not necessarily a loss. You need to get a recovery pole. I have one with a ring in the tip through which I force a 2 1/2" length of 1/8" dowel, forming a T tip. It can be used to pull a branch to shake it or lift an airplane up and drop it through a hole or even carry it away from the tree. This one is right near the edge and not very deep in. You can't push very hard with this one, it is telescoping, friction fit and if you push too hard, it will collapse.

Love to know where to get one!

Ground control to Major Tom...Come in Major Tom... Dang, Skip. It was flying so well. Then it flew too high... At least you know the next windy time will blow it free. Hope you get there before some lucky kid.
