First of all, welcome to Spain and God be with you. Now: "Non-denominational", is just another disguise of protestantism, and protetantism with the three different monsters-ideologies it engendered (Liberalism, socialism and nationalism) is just what destroyed Spain. There´s not a single anglo-saxon protestant book from the XVII century ahead that don´t talk lies about Spain, talk exactly what the protestants anglo-saxons were doing in the north of America: exterminating indians, and encouraging white supremacism, protestant ethic of work (Work till you die), and no wonder, since Spain was the main sword against protestant heresy in the XVI century. Hopefully, one day we´ll be back to mediterranean catholic culture, to practice charity, siesta, mixing with other cultures, love inmigrants, and fight peacefully for the only true holy and apostolic church.

As other people have explained to you, in Spain, for centuries, the presence of religion in the lives of citizens was omnipresent and exerted an influence that was not always positive because it was exercised as a political power, something that did not happen in the United States, where economic power is the dominant force. Under the Franco dictatorship, the Catholic religion was imposed to such an extent that when democracy arrived, there was a movement of rejection by society and that young people have continued. Of course, the church has done good things, and its social work with the disadvantaged is important, but it is true that it does not achieve a good connection with the current world and if you relate to the Catholic world, you immediately become suspected of being a supporter of the dictatorship, the extreme right, fascism or whatever you want to call it. Naturally this is not true, but there are certain groups of that thought. In the end, in Spain, thanks to our stupid politicians, no matter which party, the civil war, older than the Second World War, has not yet been buried. Besides, there has always been something anticlerical about the Spanish people, as can be seen in all their literature. There are good historians in English who will certainly inform you better than these comments, which, at least in my case, I did not take as something truly indisputable.

Kind of. Young people abandoned the Church in the late 1950s and during the 1960s and 1970s. By the mid 1960s the church-going was quite low and those young people who were overly Christian were social outcasts. Religion was not imposed in the reality of the private life of Spaniards during Franco's time, and it was during the last 15 years of his life when everything collapsed. Actually, even the Catholic church rejected Franco's regime quite actively since the Vatican II in 1962.

Meg, you'll see... the integrity and the core of the inheritance Jesus left for us to sustain and strengthen and make grow and mature our faith, hope and love while we are in this exile is deposited only in the Catholic Church. To despise it is to despise Jesus and His gracious present He left for us His lovers. All those "denominational" and "non denominational" "ministries" are all branches of Protestantism. Now, the birth of Protestantism was not a "Reform of the Church", as protestants claim, but a rebelion against the core and authenticity of Christianity which is found only in Catholicism, as I said. Its diffusion was not due to the spiritual factor but to the political, social and economic interests of the German Princes who used Luther's ideas to rebel and free themselves from the authority of the Pope in order to appropriate all the enormous riches that the Church had in their lands and take away the authority the Pope had over their populations so they could keep it for themselves. Thus this doctrine was established and disseminated for sociopolitical, that is, human, reasons, so that the divine factor was almost completely lost from sight. Protestantism and all its branches are too human, minimally divine or lacking the divine element entirely no matter how much they say "Oh Lord! Oh Lord!". There is no way to participate of the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Christ but through the Eucharist and our only access to it is through apostolic priesthood: only the catholic priest can consecrate the bread and the wine for them to become the Flesh and the Blood of the living Jesus, and only through that participation can we be part of the Mystical Body of Christ, which is one of the names belonging to the Catholic Church only. You talk a lot about "Bible studies", consider that we christians do not adore a book neither are we under the laws of the Old Testament, we are not even under any letter of the whole Bible. Jesus is not interested in the "letter" or literality of the Scriptures but in that we grasp and assimilate the spirit of His message. He teaches us to adore God "in spirit and in truth", not in literality. The Father is Spirit, Jesus is the Truth, and the Holy Spirit is the One that allows us to understand it. May God bless you and your family.

Europe is fortunately a less religious and more secular and even atheistic society than America. In Europe, for historical reasons, religious freedom has been configured as the freedom to believe or not believe in God, while in America religious freedom is seen more as the freedom to profess one belief or another. Here and in Europe in general, the phenomenon of televangelists that occurs in the United States is unthinkable. We often forget that the United States was founded by religious extremists who were expelled from England and other European countries, not for their religious ideas, but for their intransigence with the ideas of others. Much has been said about the persecution of the Spanish Inquisition, but this did not have a religious sense as much as a political one, since the "Protestant" was persecuted more for being a political enemy of the Spanish monarchy than for being a heretic. There is hardly any mention of the persecution of Catholics in Protestant countries and even massacres, such as those of Irish Catholics at the hands of Cromwell's troops. Until relatively recently, there was also discrimination against them in the United States. On the other hand, it is also curious that the reformist churches that were created to end the temporal power of the Papacy, in the end became national churches, whose highest authority passed from the Pope to the King. After the Second Vatican Council, the Catholic Church entered a period of modernization that led it to adopt progressive policies in many aspects, especially with regard to the distribution of wealth and social and labor rights. A clear example are the Jesuits, who went from being the spearhead of the most traditional Catholicism to being the standard-bearers of liberation theology. It has been this progressivism of the Catholic Church that is the reason why the United States encouraged the growth of evangelical churches in Latin America, churches much more reactionary and antisocial than the Catholic Church. It is very curious how the most conservative branches of Catholicism, such as Opus Dei, the Legionaries of Christ, the Kikos, Communion and Tradition, etc., have copied the methods and even part of the discourse, especially in relation to social and economic rights and moral issues, from the evangelical churches. The evangelical churches today are a bastion of the most right-wing forces in all of America and it is very possible that this phenomenon is also occurring in Spain due to the strong Latin American immigration, since we must not forget that in those countries where the message of the evangelical churches has had the greatest impact, because it has also been where the focus has been most, it is on the poorest classes in those countries, which are also the ones that emigrate the most.

I would say your assessment is spot on here in Spain. I think the Christianity here in Spain is more of background/heritage of being raised in Spain than say, a daily relationship with Jesus like in some non-denominational sectors of Christianity. We have met some wonderful Catholic families here in Spain.

@@goanddogood Spain is a very secular country, which is why homosexuals can marry, women can go topless on the beach and sexuality is not taboo. Forty years ago, that was unthinkable in Spain. The Catholic Church has had enormous power since the Middle Ages and was an ally of Franco during his 40-year dictatorship. People think that the Church in Spain only brought poverty, backwardness and repression, and after the arrival of democracy in 1975 and entry into the European Union in 1986, the Spanish quickly abandoned all links with Catholicism. Even so, by tradition, there are processions at Easter, Christmas and the day of the Three Kings, especially for small children, but in general, religion in Spain is seen as archaic. I think that there is too much religion in the USA, but I respect that.

While it's true that the Church in Spain has been a powerful institution throughout history, it's important to recognize the positive contributions it made as well. For instance, during the time of the Inquisition, while civil courts often imposed harsher penalties, the Church tribunals were sometimes more lenient and focused on reconciliation rather than punishment. Historical records show that many accused individuals preferred to be tried by the Inquisition rather than civil courts due to the procedural safeguards and opportunities for appeal. Additionally, the Church was instrumental in preserving knowledge and education during the Middle Ages. Monasteries were centers of learning, where ancient texts were copied and preserved, contributing to the intellectual foundations of Europe. The Church also played a vital role in art, architecture, and culture, commissioning works that remain treasures of human history. Charity and social welfare were other areas where the Church excelled. Religious orders established hospitals, orphanages, and schools, providing care and education to the most vulnerable members of society. These efforts laid the groundwork for many modern social services. While the Church's influence has waned in modern Spain, its historical role is complex and cannot be reduced to just repression or backwardness. It also fostered unity, education, and cultural achievements that shaped Spain's identity. @janres9540

In Spain and Europe in general, the Christian religion is an increasingly forgotten subject. The United States is a very conservative and religious country. There it is normal to say "God bless America", but if a politician here says "God bless Spain" (or France, or Germany), the voters would take him for an ultraconservative madman and almost no one would vote for him.

Do you know if you can deduct mortgage interest expense, property taxes and management fees against US rental income for Spanish income tax purposes? Also, the treaty does not mean that if you pay taxes in the US, you don't need to pay taxes in Spain, you just get credit for the US taxes and if Spanish taxes are higer, you woudl need to pay the difference to Spain. Thank you!

Generally, taxes on foreigners who are not from the European Union have significant surcharges in the contributions to the Treasury. Anything that is outside the scope of the EU must be looked at carefully, because the Treasury is implacable, and as a piece of advice, do not try to hide anything from the Treasury, because they are fearsome with the fines for tax evasion.

02:48 Foreigners who are not from member countries of the European Union must pay for private insurance equivalent to public health services. This is done to prevent people who have never contributed to the public health system from using it without contributing. The British have learned this lesson late. When they were members of the European Union and needed medical attention in Spain (or another EU country), they could access public healthcare without a problem. Since Brexit, if they come to live in Spain, like You must pay for private insurance, unless you work legally and contribute to the public system.
