Hi Wes! I don't usually comment on cover videos, but I wanted to say a few words. I liked what you did on the chordal part, although there's room for improvement. A lot of interesting added voicings and trills. What you need to do to lift your playing to the next level is to work on your phrasing, both on the chords and the solos. A big part of Allan's style was in his sense of time, just as much as his speed and fluidity and note choices. That went for both his chord stuff and for his solos. You've got the chops. You have interesting note choices and good fluidity. The sound seemed pretty good, even on my crappy laptop speakers. Work on making those fast lines smooth, and really think about the rhythmic shape you want those lines to have. That was one of the things that made Allan's original solo on this so iconic. You should probably talk to a professional teacher about what you can do about that bit. Maybe even a sax player or something. It's rarely talked about in guitar books. It's also interesting to note that when you played over the vamp, it sounded quite a lot better than when those chords starting changing during the solo. Playing over Allan's chord changes is hard - it was even hard for himself. For good measure, I'll subscribe to your channel, hoping we get to see more interesting music. Good luck!
@wesleylakemusicАй бұрын
Thanks for the feedback, man! Much appreciated! Yeah, I agree. My phrasing isn't the best, I feel sometimes I'm not letting my ear guide me as much as I should, and I don't feel I'm always conscious of timing or creating an almost arch/build (not outright going into the insanely fast stuff straight away) for my solos and that's the main thing I'm trying to improve. I always prefer when Allan methodically outlines the beginning of a solo slowly and then gradually builds on it. For some reason, I have a tendency to go full turbo, and it's something I need to work on, especially because my playing can be quite hard to follow sometimes. I have a chart for the changes but I usually struggle creating a short, coherent melody for it sometimes. Again, timing, being deliberately slow as well as improving my phrasing is something I need to work on. I need to listen and play with more horn players (and others in general), it's difficult to find instrument diversity in my area and/or improvisers, so I've considered institutes/education for this but it's pretty daunting to me as I'd struggle to afford anything outside my area. Thanks for the feedback and for the subscription! It's very valuable to me. I'm hoping to upload more videos like this as well as my own music in the future and I'll try to make it interesting haha

@@wesleylakemusic I understand it's a struggle. It is very hard to be your own teacher. But I hear a sense of determination. Just watched Rick Beato's interview with Mike Stern, and it was very inspiring, because Mike had all these struggles in his life, but he persists. I recommend you watch it. And don't forget: The ultimate goal has to be to sound like YOURSELF. Allan did. Mike does. So can you!

Man, you've got great taste, with Holdsworth and Lane in your repertoire. I presume you've been following Mateo Mancuso, yeah? What he does with his right hand is remarkable. And so tasteful. Not an easy skill to add to anyone's playing. But worth investigating, huh?
@wesleylakemusic3 ай бұрын
@edwnorris Thanks a lot man! Holdsworth and Lane are my largest inspirations and are heavily fundamental to my playing. I like Matteo and have been following him for years, however I'm very "on and off" about him. He's amazing, don't get me wrong, and his right hand is remarkable - but I'm not a huge fan of his music, but that's just me. His harmonic vocab is a bit clichè imo (not to say he's bad, but I'm more invested on people who push boundaries alike Lane and Holdsworth, similarly Jonathan Kreisberg, Ben Monder and Kurt Rosenwinkel). Besides when it comes to players like Mateo or Max Ostro especially, i prefer listening to Guthrie personally, thats just me. He's very deserving of his praise and fame, I hope an influx of new and exciting players come to the limelight because of him. Also not sure on your last sentence, are you implying I should have more "Matteo-like Melodicism" in my playing? Maybe, but I like the approach I'm going with now. Besides, Lane and Holdsworth (and EJ to a degree) have taught me a lot about being melodic/tasteful whilst being unique

I have a version on a recorded cassette, Live 7-9-83 as I recall, w/out looking for it. I saw him playing it several times around then. It's recorded with what I surmise is a $10 recorder. I always thought it was a cover song, don't know why- I guess he said it. It's news to me that it's a Rob Alexander song, as is Wesley here. Other tracs, I very much regarded as viable singles were All Need, I'm Tryin & Special Love (My Heart), I have come to regard as Rob songs. They're not on Souvenirs, or Seven Worlds, c.d. 's released retrospectively. Due to their obvious quality, Ive often thought they should have been. I figured they fell out, but heard Eric telling a reporter/fan that Rob was doing well, and spoke highly of him. Heard only two things Wesley has done so far, I'm impressed.

@@wesleylakemusic Your very welcome! I'm near 70 now a guitar player my whole life. I've become aware of there being many young players these days that are amazing, but to be able duplicate and play in the ballpark with Allen is at the top.IMO I don't want to intrude into personal choices of create, but I thought I would offer this bit of advice. Zero in on your personal music and indulge in that as a priority. I believe we all have that within us and it can be elusive in the face of what others do that influences what we create. Keep going with Allen and others of course, he has allot to learn from! Constantly adding to your vocabulary in music and your instrument is well, all the better! Just an offering here, but like I said I don't want to influence whatever choices you see in front of you that feel are the right choices for you. And I'll check your video. All the best.
@wesleylakemusic3 ай бұрын
@charmaineruddock4158 Oh wow! That does mean a lot to me, thank you. I appreciate the advice, I delved into learning Allan purely because of the mystique behind his playing and always had a deep emotional connection to the latter and his compositions. However, it's never been my intention to copy him (although that'd be great to sound like him). I've always had my own approach to making my music, and I do heavily borrow ideas/concepts from Allan. It's not my intention to be a 1:1 replica of him. Also, why should I exactly copy Allan when people would prefer listening to the real thing? I want my musical output to be individualistic, but it's fun to mimic Allan sometimes, and I also get more engagement doing content people are familiar with so I usually prioritise that, however when I reach a certain engagement threshold, I intend to prioritise my own music. But your advice is greatly appreciated, Allan has been a great learning tool for me and has improved my musicality for the better. But please feel free to listen to what I have uploaded! I have multiple demos on my channel you can have a gander at that are all quite different to this. Thank you!

Hei, interesting choice of a cover! It's quite rare to hear any of Allan's SynthAxe pieces played on guitar, and from what I understand for good reason: Allan frequently messed with the tuning on his SynthAxe, so a lot of pieces are actually unplayable on guitar! Did you have any problems "converting" this to guitar? As far as soloing: You've got the chops, and it sounds OK. But I would like to hear you relate to the chords more in your lines. Maybe start by digging more into arpeggiating the chords. Those are some intricate harmonies, so the results should be interesting. Good luck!
@wesleylakemusic4 ай бұрын
@@aharchives Wow thanks man! Appreciate seeing you commenting here! I'm fully aware about his alternate tunings like 4ths/5ths, reverse tunings n such, you can tell especially with 5ths due to the interval structure inside the chord being very wide. Although here I think a lot of it I think might be in standard, but it wasn't necessarily difficult to adapt to guitar actually besides from when he sustains the chord and adds extensions on top of it (for which I had to tap the notes). And much appreciated man! I used to exploit the typical maj/minor arpeggios Allan plays as well as e.g. diminished/augmented arpeggios a lot but in some cases I've purposefully tried to not use them as I over-relied on it, but I will totally take your advice! A smoothness between the changes as well as playing interesting and intricate lines is what I'm trying to achieve, I think it wasnt in my mind while improvising to use a 3 note per string arpeggio e.g. lol. But my intent was to never copy Holdsworth outright in the solo and rather have it as a tribute to him in my style, using his language but approaching it my own way per se, I wrote a lead sheet for this using Holdsworths symbols and followed it myself. But I'm no Holdsworth at the end of the day, but I can try! This isn't really my best solo and it could be much better, but I want to try something different honestly, I'm 19 so I've got many years ahead of me. Anyways thanks a lot man! Love seeing your comments!
@aharchives4 ай бұрын
@@wesleylakemusic Well, to put it this way - I'm not sure Allan could play that when he was 19! You certainly have a good ear, so keep putting it to good use. The main reason I love Allan is that nobody sounded like he did, so do try to find your voice. But I think anyone could learn a few things from him: First, however he played, fast or slow, there was always a sense of MELODY to his solos - he would shape his lines consciously. Second, and this is often forgotten among guitarists, he had a very keen sense of RHYTHM. WHERE he placed his notes was as important as WHAT notes he played. Keep it at!
@wesleylakemusic4 ай бұрын
@@aharchives Thank you! I do still have many years ahead of me to improve. Precisely the point, Allan is like no other and his uniqueness and individuality is what sets him apart from every other guitarist. I want/have been learning his language, and yes, it would be great to play and make music like him, but I have my own tastes n individual sound. Somedays I want to play like Allan, sometimes I don't. You're exactly on the money there, his sense of melody and connecting Melodic lines was essential to his sound. And exactly, his use of rests especially is unmistakable as well as odd groupings. What I get from Allan is that the melodies and time feel are very natural (he'd sustain a note to the second bar or downbeat and continue on the upbeat e.g., whereas most would focus starting from the first bar and on the downbeats). I appreciate your advice man and I will take it with much consideration in order to improve. Thank you so much!
