The barber character is portrayed by Howard Terbell McNear (January 27, 1905 - January 3, 1969). He appeared on the Andy Griffith Show on 80 episodes from 1961 to 1967. During that period, he had a stroke and needed 18 months to achieve a partial recovery. After his stroke, Andy Griffith asked him to return to the series, despite McNear's inability to walk or stand. The production crew accommodated him, as he was usually seen on screen, either seated, or standing, with support. It is testimony to Griffith's great kindness and humanity that he kept McNear on staff, despite his poor health. (Ref: Wikipedia)

I wish they'd have kept jim Nabors as Gomer on the show and not brought back Howard Mcnear after his stroke since he couldn't play Floyd the same after that and I didn't like Goober all that much either.

Gomer left to get his own TV show (Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C.) where he made much more money than playing a minor character in Mayberry.

The song is spoof on the song "Sweeny Todd The Demon Barber on Fleet Street" a barber who slit the throats of his customers. they made it into a play. The play was a Broadway hit. That's why the dumb "Sweeny Floyd" song is here.

My mom made me go to this crazy old barber when I was a kid in the mid 1960s. He was on old guy in his 70s who probably had Alzheimer's disease. He would space-out while he was cutting my hair. He would stop and just stare in the corner. Then he would start talking to me like I was one of his army buddies from World War One.

allison haplin needs to relax about the stroke and sitting down of course it wasn't ment to be offensive.Most nights before I go to bed I watch mayberry on my dvd's it takes me back to and right in the town of mayberry althouh only in a pretend way It takes me back to a nice place and away from all the trash talking jerry springer crap and the hatred and violence going on today I love going back being with andy barney otis ernis -t floyd goober thelmERlou helen charlene and the boys
