When I was in aged care I supported a woman who was 17 when she fled her native East Prussia. Her family was wealthy but she had 2 infant siblings so cloth nappies took precedence over any valuables they could have brought with them. Her family were billeted into a farm where the farmers treated them poorly for being Protestant. She left for England as soon as she could to be a domestic assistant. The only time I saw her cry was when she said that her mother used to carry a gold purse then died with a plastic handbag.

Read a dozen of these books about the, " heroic" German. The poor, poor German. Yet, never a mention of their deeds in Russia. Not one note about the Holocaust. Nothing but poor me, ain't it so sad, yeah but. These dudes were monsters in every sense of the word. They want you to forget, & forgive. Well, f them, & f you if you fall for this crap.

Towards the end, after the encirclement of the 6th army, I really began to feel very sorry for the plight of the ordinary German soldier. Hitler didn't give a damn about sending a quarter million men to such a terrible fate.

Love the book and the reading but bad mistake at 3 42 20 secs. The Australian PM who defied Churchill was John Curtin not Artie Fadden. Fadden was a fill in PM (from the junior Coalition partner the Country Party) for 40 days during tumultuous Parliamentary times of no confidence votes. An election was held and the opposition Labor Party won in a landslide, partly over the issue of where our troops were fighting while Australia was in peril from the Japs. Curtin brought the troops back, to the extreme displeasure of Churchhill. Curtin died in office just before the end of the war and many think he worked himself to death during it. He was also greatly distressed by the traitorous actions of wharf workers and coal miners and their unions who had been infiltrated by communists and hence sided with the enemy while the Soviet Union was an ally of Germany. Sabotage on the wharves of military equipment was rife later leading to US soldiers supervising loading/unloading operations with loaded weapons trained on the wharfies suspected of deliberately damaging gear.

Why do people have an obsessive need to feel like they are righting some perceived wrong done? The US didnt ignore the French contribution to the invasion. Ive seen countless different accounts of how important the French contribution was. You can claim the British ignored the French contribution since them ignoring Dutch resistance intelligence is why Market Garden failed and the British are known for ignoring contributions made by anyone but them.

2:30:00 crazy hearing the fake reports of the 6th army fighting to the death couldn’t imagine fighting there to then get you’re family told you’re dead when you’re actually marching to the gulag, interesting fact they kept finding small groups of Germans for months after the surrender

Incredible book. I can’t imagine living through the the pain, misery and horrors, even if it only lasted as long as this was. It is infatherable living through it for three years and then having the mental aspect the rest of your life. He may have been fighting on the wrong side, but no judgment from me. He was definitely a great and tough man.

Generaloberst Heinrici's account paint a vivid picture of the immense hardships faced by his XXXXlll armeekorps and the entire 4th army during the Russian winter of 1941-42.The extreme Cold, limited supplies and challenging terrain significantly impacted 4th army's combat capabilities and contributed to it's eventual failure to take Moscow. Of course credit goes to the red army for defending their capital and preventing it's capture.

Great listen. Interesting to hear that long before the NSDAP, there was already a strong strain of Eliminationist Anti-Semitism in Germany & Austria.
I really do think if they had the four divisions and the amount of tanks and ammo they needed they would have reached sixth army
