I forgot to add one last thing. Only Chicago can compete with Houston in food and maybe NYC. A mistake made by many who move here is they stick to standard tex mex, bbq, soul food, and creole/cajun food. I love all of those, but Houston is literally the most diverse city in the US which means you can get food from any country/continent here. African (both west and east...and not just Nigerian and Ethiopian), Caribbean (Jamaica, Trinidad, Bahamian, Honduran, Cuban, Puerto Rican, Belizean, etc) Italian, Asian (from pretty much every country...see the southwest side for the Asian Diaspora) Indian, Persian, Mediterranean, Russian, Turkish, authentic Mexican, Vegan, Native American, etc. I would advise type in any country culture or city followed by the word "restaurant in Houston" and you'll get hundreds of restaurants that will take you a few years to get to and I'm not exaggerating. Big cities with diversity will always give you the best food options.

It’s really isn’t … coming from the Bay Area
@jus3278
@jus3278 6 ай бұрын
@itslitallday4361 Bay doesn't have the diverse presence that Houston, NYC, and Chicago have across cultures. Have strong Asian presence, dwindling AA presence, not a strong African or Caribbean presence in comparison to the aforementioned, etc. Diversity matters for food scenes. The more people that you have from particular cultural background means more dining options for them, which ultimately means more competition, which means you have to stay on point to compete. Plus NYC Chicago and Houston have signature food like Italian, Sandwiches, Creole/Cajun, Mexican, Tex Mex, BBQ, etc. Everything I can get in the Bay food wise I can get in Chicago, Houston, or NYC. The same can't be said the other way around. They're a tier below. Great food scene but a tier or two below.

It's pretty easy to make friends anywhere imo, if you are outgoing. If you are a guy, I would suggest hitting a sports bar during football season. Finding a common bond over sports is an easy way to build friendships as a man. For women, there are plenty of brunches, cultural events, etc. where you can meet other women with similar interests. Houstonians are friendly as long as we aren't on the roads lol. If you start talking to someone let them know that you're new and get their contact information to hang out with them and their friends. Plus there are so many meetups to become a part of, some that are specific with people from other cities who have moved here. In 2023 there are no excuses not to make friends anywhere, unless you just don't make any effort. There are a lot of places with sections here, I tend to avoid those venues. There are a lot of places where that doesn't exist though that are a little bit more low key and not blasted all over social media. After hours are still lit on the Southwest Side like liquid lounge and other stuff off of Harwin. Also Caribbeans pretty much have parties every weekend in different areas across town. There used to be great Caribbean spots like Club Riddims and they brought back Jamaica Jamaica, but it's now gone. However, Caribbeans are always throwing parties all over town and they will play Reggae, Dance Hall, Soca, Afro Beats, and even a little Hip Hop. Just google Carribbean events Houston and it will pop up on Eventbrite and In Da Mix. I also suggest salsa dancing, which there are plenty of spots at like Gloria's on a Saturday night (straight dope). Your EDM spots will be in Downtown and contemporary hip hop places like 5 Central, Urban Social, Faces, Carrington's (if you like it ratchet lol), The Spot (Ea-Do location), Swagger, Heinke, Davenport (best drinks in town), 93 Til (awesome vinyl collection), Grooves, Trez (definitely suggest on Sunday brunch hours), Mo Better Brews, Anvil, etc. are if you want to actually mingle or dance to popular rap music. There are also spots on Washington where you can mingle, as well as in the Heights and Memorial area. Alley Kat used to be a great spot to dance to for old school hip hop/dance hall/EDM/R&B and was probably the most popping space in town before the pandemic shut it down. Think of Timehri or Cloak and Dagger on U Street, but bigger with more rooms. There is still hope that they may bring it back and if they do it is a MUST. Follow them on social media...the same owner of the Breakfast Club was the owner of it. The Flat is great for dancing, especially on Wednesday nights, which are Reggae nights (really suggest it, especially in the summer). I would actually say it's the best place to just dance and be yourself, because people don't act pretentious in there. 4212 is dope for old school hip hop on Fridays. I've been clubbing in Houston for 20 plus years now and while it has changed, one thing that I've always loved about it as a native is that there is something for everybody and you can pretty much party anywhere in the city or even the suburbs. There is so much more outside of the trendy places like Address, Kamp, TLH (which locals don't even go to), Cle, Chapman, and 5015. I actually don't even suggest those to people when they visit, unless they just want to take pictures for social media. DMV people do well here as do Nigerians.

No it's not lol. Dallas is always behind Houston in everything and this goes for Black, White, Latino, and Asian culture. Dallas is a good city, don't get me wrong, but Houston is a lot better. The main issue with Dallas is that it is whitewashed. They have diversity there, but it is not embraced, and it is a very racist city where everyone non-white is pushed to the peripheral. There are so many Black folks from Dallas who come here to go to school at U of H, TSU, PV, or Rice and they never leave and go back after. Houston universities, which bring in young Black people on the verge of being professionals, along with Black Greek Culture help that age group feel right at home no matter where they are from. Black young adults aren't rushing to go to SMU or TCU Black students only make up 5% of the population at those schools and those are both great universities, but it goes to show you that not even Black people from Dallas want to attend there. Black Dallas is still trying to establish themselves, but they are far behind Houston, ATL, D.C., and Charlotte when it comes to Black people being able to move around how we want to and that goes for partying, your career, and living (Dallas is segregated as hell). I think just taking a look at the hip hop scene in Dallas in comparison to Houston will tell you all that you need to know about which city is a better place for Blacks to thrive in. Dallas is closer to Virginia than it is to Maryland or D.C. if you get my drift lol. It's getting better, but it has a long way to go.
@grayscar05
@grayscar05 Жыл бұрын
@jus3278 I'm a TSU graduate and lived in Dallas. Some Black ppl like Dallas culture and vibes over Houston. Is Dallas a party city like Houston? Not really. Does Houston feel Blacker than Dallas? Yes it does. But Dallas got a lot of jobs, very clean city, and got all the great amenities you would expect from a major city. And Black kids dont really go to SMU and TCU, they are more likely to go to UNT and UT Arlington, which attract some Black kids from the Houston area too. UT Arlington actually leads the state in producing Black college graduates, PV and TSU follow behind unfortunately
@jus3278
@jus3278 Жыл бұрын
@@grayscar05 I'm a Houston native who has spent plenty of time in Dallas over my 40 plus years on earth. I also went to school in the DMV and have family there also. I say all that to say that Dallas is nothing like D.C. outside of the fact that Black people are there. Dallas is a good city, but for Black people Houston is much = better. Cost of living? Houston. Job market? Houston, because it's much more diverse with the med center, green energy, aerospace, oil and gas, entertainment and arts (for the creatives), logistics, construction, and a tech market that is growing (I work in Tech and see companies from all over the world that want to do business in Houston right now due to the Med Center...Healthcare Tech is booming right now, especially post Covid). Higher Education? Advantage Houston. Black networking? Advantage Houston. Upward mobility? Advantage Houston, because we have more Black people in power in corporations and government institutions here and our civil rights organizations do better here as well. Nightlife, restaurants, culture, and entertainment? Advantage Houston. Dallas like any major city is not clean, in fact it ranks pretty high on being one of the most unclean cities in the US. The Trinity River is absolutely filthy and if you don't believe me look up the history on it. It has a nickname of "The River of Death" for a reason and it is still filled with garbage today. When people say Dallas is "cleaner" that is code word for "whiter," because both cities are spread out with tons of commuters contributing to the poor air quality. I wouldn't use the adjective clean for Dallas or Houston. San Antonio is the only city that I would use the word clean to describe in Texas (Austin's air quality isn't the greatest). DFW is the generic version of Houston and I don't say that to crap on the city, but I also don't lie either. It's a good city for Black people in comparison to most of the US, but in the pecking order it's behind Houston, ATL, D.C., and I'd even say Charlotte in 2023, when you factor in everything across the board. This is primarily, because we hold more positions of power and influence in these spaces.
