I don't get them anymore. Used thistle for years and always had success and they just don't use them. I've tried new feeders and new fresh thistle seed. I've just wasted thistle for a few years. Black oil , unshelled seeds, safflower nothing is working

I made a 2 foot diameter of some up-cycled chain-link fence to make a hoop that the feeder sits into. Cardinals and finches get inside but the larger birds just stopped coming around.

What do you call a nest box mounted to a tree? A raccoon lunch box.
@WBUBarrie
@WBUBarrie 7 ай бұрын
While you're not wrong in stating that raccoons predated bird nests in trees. The reality is many species will not use a nest box that's not on a tree, for example nuthatches. You can assist the birds by wrapping sheet metal around the trunk, using small hole sizes and predator guards, securely mounting the boxes with screws and using locks on the side panels that open. The reality is these species have to deal with predators such as this in nature and offering a nesting box to create habitat doesn't mean that it's doomed to fail.

Now, something I've been brought to attention of and/or thinking more about lately is the situation of making things too easy. For example, this seed being higher in fat and oil and easier to break open, if we start offering too much of the Golden Safflower, initially it may seem like it's making it better, but what happens if those long term effects lead to birds losing some of their better qualities, like stronger beaks, for opening shells and such, because of what similarly happened to the Roman Empire, and subsequently lead to its fall, where things became too easy and laid back, and then complacency leads to growing weaker rather than progressing? Okay, yes, maybe this is way too heady or excessively overthinking, but I'm just considering the super long term and not wanting to contribute to a decline in bird heartiness, in the attempt to rid ourselves of such nuisance birds/pests. Granted, that means I'm now coming off somewhat hypocritical, as what lead me here in the first place was trying to find something to discourage Starlings aside from just popping them off, (legal control) but I also now wonder if I'll just have to deal with them, as I still should offer other seeds too and not switch over to just one catch-all seed, as it could potentially have lasting effects down the road, as mentioned above in this comment.

Thanks for your comment! We’ve started a live bird feeder cam and moved over to a different KZbin Channel. We encourage you to check out our new channel and subscribe to see our new content. Since we moved our content over there we have not been responding to comments on our older videos as frequently. Great question. You can offer the No-Mess with millet in this feeder but we strongly recommend a No-Mess without millet for this feeder. The reason being that the millet is the same width as the drainage holes and it tends to clog the feeder. So if you have another option of a No-Mess without millet use that one instead!

Since we moved our content over there we have not been responding to comments on our older videos as frequently. That's a good question. A hungry deer would probably eat anything but I suspect it wouldn't be their preferred food. Hot pepper infused seeds would be a better option for deterring deer or handing a feeder out of reach (14' or higher).

Very interesting. Making one of these myself atm in central Africa. Lots of beautiful birds where I live, and I've been thinking about making a birdcam for quite a while now. You know what might help to get awesome photos of the birds visiting your bird buddy? Put a small mirror just above the camera. Most birds love mirrors, and they tilt their heads in the funniest ways to see themselves. Just an idea that might bring some more variety to this awesome hobby.

Thanks for your comment! We’ve started a live bird feeder cam and moved over to a different KZbin Channel. We encourage you to check out our new channel and subscribe to see our new content. Since we moved our content over there we have not been responding to comments on our older videos as frequently. House Sparrows typically don't like clinging to feeders like woodpeckers do. They also aren't keen on suet. What they like are the seeds (like millet or corn) found in many lower quality suet products. Our suggestion would be to use a high quality real suet product without seeds. That should be enough to get rid of House Sparrows if not then go with a high quality plain suet. The feeder itself will not close for House Sparrows as it's not designed to keep them out.

If your a fan of blackbirds visiting then it's probably not the right product for you. If you want to deter them then nutrasaff would help save the cost of the food they consume (typically a lot very quickly)! It really depends what you want to offer in your yard.

@WBUBarrie
@WBUBarrie Жыл бұрын
A good suggestion but the Bluebird Pole isn't ideal as it is only 5 ft tall and you cannot add length to it. Once installed that leaves you with 3.5-4 feet above ground which a squirrel can easily jump overtop of.

Keeping critters out of bird feeders are an important part of the hobby for many people. It's an investment upfront to do this but in the long run saves a lot of costs in squirrels eating the food and a lot of headaches for people.
