I love your videos. I have learned so much from them. I used your information to date my machine. It’s a 15k born December 24, 1947. My question is about what I see when I read that a machine is a 15-88 or 15-90 (for example). What does the 88 or 90 represent and how do I find out what my 15k is?
@SimplyStitchyКүн бұрын
The "K" indicates that your machine was built in Kilbowie, Scotland... like mine! The numbers after the "K" refer to slight differences between the machines. The 80 is a hand crank. The 91 is a potted motor. The 88 has reverse and so on... Check this page out: needlebar.org/main/15chart/ it might help you work out which one you have. Let me know! Thanks for watching! 🙂

Great video - have not seen the small hand cranks that attach to the stop motion wheel before. I have converted 3 machines to hand crank now - first my 66K, because she was a hard rubbish fb group find, just the head ( had been removed from a treadle base), already had a spoked wheel so that was easy! Then a friend found a 99K at hard rubbish, so I removed that motor which looked damaged & I did not want to touch the wiring. Spent ages cleaning the machine because it was utterly filthy, then fitted a hand crank after swapping out the solid wheel for a spoked one. Last was another 99K at the local museum, again dodgy looking wiring but she had a spoked balance wheel already, so it was easy to unbolt the motor & screw the hand crank in. Now visitors to the museum can have a go at using the machine, it emphasises the difference to new modern machines by being hand operated rather than electric, plus of course there is nothing like that lovely “tickety clack” sound ! PS. A bit of black enamel paint - or black nail polish! -works well to cover the “ made in China” transfer on the reproduction hand cranks.

I bet the working hand crank at the museum is a big hit! Thanks so much for sharing and for watching! 🙂

I have a German Veritas that been told is like Singer 28 model Would like to change it into a handcrank. Now the stop motion screw wouldn't come out. It seems the head is damage and their's no connection with the needle . The hand wheel move but nothing else. My question how to remove that difficult screw ? Are all handcrank fix any European machines? How do you call those specialty handcrank for machines that doesn't have a motor boss?
@SimplyStitchy5 күн бұрын
As far as I know, Singer hand cranks only fit Singer machines. I'm not aware of any being fitted to different brands. Best thing to do is check FaceBook to see if there is a group for the Veritas. I'm not familiar with that particular machine. I think it's called a wrap around hand crank... at least, that's what I know it as.
@ran2wild3705 күн бұрын
Probably within SInger15 class they would fit. But as you can see not that smooth sometimes.

Thanks - really interesting. Can you tell me why you would want to convert an electric to a handcrank? I have a couple of 128 handcranks that I love but never think to use. Also are you aware if a featherweight could be converted to a treadle. The wiring on my featherweight shorted out and I can't see me being able to get it fixed.
@SimplyStitchy5 күн бұрын
The featherweight was built to be electric so I'm really not sure that you can turn it into a treadle. Check with these guys: singer-featherweight.com/ they might know. Or, they might be able to help you with rewiring. As for converting an electric machine to a hand crank... I don't want to mess with my wiring issues either 🙂

:-) So mostly get the handcrank machine for cheap or... just drop it all and buy a walking foot industrial machine for sewing heavy fabric in 2020s... 100 years after those handcranks. Okkkaaayyy Sailrite.. :-))) Actually SInger15 class reperesents good machines including those 66/200 series. but they are all 100 years old and of course they can't compete with a modern and cheap industrial machines when you need to work with upholstery class fabric.
@SimplyStitchy5 күн бұрын
Maybe, maybe not... but you don't get the musical clickety clickety click of a vintage hand crank if you go for a modern industrial.
@historygradstu4 күн бұрын
I have a 15k80 and a industrial 111w155 triple feed machine....I see your point of having a one size fits all machine. But it would be hard to darn or do free motion work on a sailright and it's kungfu variants. Likewise, the sailrights don't have the triple feed and the pressor foot height is less around a 1/4 inch. Sometimes it's easier to have a few machines to approach the task at hand....sure you could have a Juki 441 or the Chinese Kung Fu clones of it....and you could sew 7/8 thick leather with it too and easily do upholstery work...maybe even clothing with 50wt thread all the way to tex 415 thread but how cumbersome will be a one size fits all machine? As far as age being a disqualifying factor...the singer 111 series machines are approaching 100 years in age and will easily handle any upholstery job under it's 3/8 of inch or more pressor foot height.

To be capable of double needle or twin needle stitching - your machine needs to be able to do a zigzag stitch. Otherwise the hole in the needle plate won't be big enough.

Good stuff there. I have never seen a 15K in my neck of the woods. My 201K will not handle the heavy threads as well as the 15. My hand crank is a 66 and I suspect it will struggle with the heavy threads as well. I'll give it a try and, in the meantime, keep an eye out for the 15K. Thanks for taking us beyond the norm.

Well, the maximum is the dense denim or dense but not much thick upholstery. Layers shifting is much of the problem. Which is solved by ether tripple or double feed industrial machines. So, these iron Singers have their limits too. But still very handy as deomestic machines.

Well, Podolsk PMZ-1A (15-88/89)/German Singer plant equipment relocated to uSSR. It sews everything, but unfortunately feed dogs aren't the same as an industrial machine has :-/, so the feeding is rather the problem.

I too bought one of these from Amazon and it was a piece of garbage. However I didn’t give up and bought the brother side cutter SA147. I understand the newer version is SA177. I couldn’t be more pleased with it. It’s compatible with many sewing machines. You just have to clip it on like other presser feet. It finishes the seam and cuts off the excess fabric just like a serger. It’s not as fast as a serger but goes as fast as you can do your foot pedal. I even can use it on my basic manual brother sewing machine the LX3817A when we travel. I can put my fabric under and over for it to act like a serger or I can just put it under the foot and it sews like a sewing machine without cutting the fabric. It takes little practice getting used to it but after that works like a dream. Just a spool of thread and a bobbin. Takes up no space in your sewing room and it packs in my sewing accessory case for traveling.

Found two vintage machines at an estate sale, and managed to get a personal one that was my aunts grandmother's machine. Excited to ID the time period and really not looking forward to repairing it, regardless, I cannot do anything until I get back home and look into it more. My serial number appears to start with a clear CE50, have a somewhat obscured 36, and what I think to be an S (far to obscured to see without using a pencile and paper to copy the code). Looked into it a bit, and found this video on the ISMACS site, though without a CE section (only a C-). End goal would be to restore it to nearly like new condition, with as many old parts as possible, and then run it with an external power adapter (was electrified at some point for 110V DC or 70 "cycles" AC).

So you mean the clunk *isn't* normal ??? 😅 My Lotus baby is now up and running, and there's definitely a clunk between the pedal and the pitman. I chalked it up to the fact things need to move between those two, but you're telling me I can fix it ?! My Lotus makes such a delightful smooth noise with the handcrank and I was mourning losing it to the clunk of the pedal, so I'm delighted to learn I can fix that ! Once again, thank you for the invaluable information !

Thanks for the video ! It didn't end up having the info I was looking for (how taut the belt should be) but it looks like you mounted yours with as much slack/give as I did mine, so I'm going to leave it as is for now, I've already taken a bit off a few times, 5mm at a time. I'll sew with it a bit and see if she needs tightening. Thank you for the bobbin case video too, it was very helpful to get the proper order in which to remove things so I wouldn't break something ! Gave it a deep clean, she needed it, it's been 3y since her last professional servicing. I'm mounting my 1917 handcrank 66k (lotus decals !) onto a 1930 treadle table dad showed up with randomly the other day, I can't wait to see how she runs like this ! She was already a joy as a handcrank.
@SimplyStitchyАй бұрын
The tautness kind of depends on the machine. Each one is different. You're absolutely right though! Try it, take a smidge more off if you need to. Then try again. There has to be some slack though so don't go totally tight. Dads are the best aren't they? They always seem to find just what you need before you even knew you were looking for it! 🙂 Thanks for commenting and for watching! Glad I could help!
