Hey mate, my steering shaft has collapsed. Do you know if there is a rebuild kit or something for it? I’m a bit lost and feels weird to just pull it out to the right length and leave it

Hi, great video. I took my 72 column apart to change the lock cylinder. After putting the lock plate back there telescopic shaft is jammed in the bottom position and won't move. It moved freely before. Any idea why this could be?
@mathiaswallgren63073 ай бұрын
I figured it out myself. I didn't see the groove on the shaft and when it was at the very bottom the retainer ring did not go into that groove, but rather pushed against the shaft and locking it. Maybe worth mentioning that it can't be in its bottom position when putting the retainer ring on?

Looks awesome....That Drive shaft is too short......Its worth getting it done now. The slip flange will have too much play like it is. or get a spacer at the back diff flange. You can probably buy a longer rear flange.
@Stoneface_Garage6 ай бұрын
Don't think so. Corvette diff is fixed of course, and this is the shaft that came on the chassis. SBC and tranny all stock dimensions.

Nice work. I've used epoxy and glass for years in boat construction. How is the Coosa board holding up? I see it's been about 3 years since your installation. Contemplating a full glass car build using the same boat building techniques with a combination of Coosa and Divinycel foam core construction.
@Stoneface_Garage6 ай бұрын
The car is not on the road ...yet...but the floor/flange construction is unaffected by all the activity- sparks, weld splatter, solvent spills, exhaust heat,etc so far.

Thanks for the info Mate. I'm trying to do the column on my sister's Trans-Am here in Australia. Still having a lot of trouble getting the pivot pins out. Can't believe how complicated these Chevy columns are! Funny this, they're almost identical on the outside to our HZ Holden columns. But the good thing is they have about a third of the parts inside...So much easier to work on. Seriously, could Chev have made these anymore complicated?...

@@jackmccauley5042 No shit! I've worked on this thing off and on for weeks now. I've had to pull it apart 3 times, and now something wrong internally. The shaft is now catching on something inside and I can't get the pivot pins out. They just spin in either direction and don't come out.

Another quick question can you please help me with about the ball bearing rings? I’ve bought some new ones from corvette central and basically they were that hard to slot in, i had to tap them in with a hammer. The balls don’t spin and the plastic thing doesn’t rotate now that it’s in there. It’s almost like the metal ring around the plastic ring is too thick? Is that normal? Or is there something completely wrong with the steering column? Also does it matter what way it faces? It’s just sitting in there super tight.
@Stoneface_Garage9 ай бұрын
You may have the ring or the race upside down

I suppose that tcentring the wheel onto the hub is achieved by a central ring inside the stud circle. Exciting first drive Love the MX5 door handles
@Stoneface_Garage9 ай бұрын
Thanks. On these older unilugs there’s no provision for a hub centric ring as on the newer ones. The centering is done by very close tolerances of the lug shank in the wheel slot. That's why you have to mount them carefully as shown. Did you watch the door handle install video too? That was a challenge!
