his original point here about a premise having emotional content was very meaningful to me. And speaking more generally, I think a good premise just has to be INTERESTING be that because the audience is connecting emotional or intellectually. Basically, this is attempting to answer the question: how do I get the audience interested in my set up before I surprise them with my punch.

this is so cool, way more insightful than those top-comics-chatting-about comedy videos (those are cool too in their own way). ive yet to see anything like this where it breaks down the craft without sterilizing or demystifying it. just using normal, accessible language to describe what needs to take place for effective comedy, with the understanding that you have to be actually funny for it to work

we have a local comedian called Paul smith who has made an absolute fortune selling out tours and the majority of people come to watch his crowd work, crowd work is in itself an art and perfect for building a brand especially on social media in todays TikTok and Instagram reel society, One liners and crowd work are the best for this type of engagement and aspects i want to incorporate the most.

I don't blame comics posting crowd work clips but my God it's getting tiresome. There are some exceptions, I love Phil Hanley for example, but I just can't stand the idea that standup comedy is going to slowly devolve into spending $50 a ticket just to hear someone ask other audience members what they do for a living. I don't give an eff about the audience! I want to hear good bits.

I play music for a living and I do crowd work almost every show, it's incredibly easy. The craft of building an act and weaving themes together is much more impressive and artistic. I won't say crowd work is never funny but for me only the top 5% of it is watchable. When you understand how it works, there's almost no magic in it.

My favorite podcast for advice, listen to it constantly, gonna be another amazing episode! As a comedian it really gives me so much more perspective each episode! Also, what a masterclass for comedy, this concept of just being relaxed and flowing and strenghtening the fun side of your comedy is so incredibly important overall to succeed, and the way Pete essentially taught it was so perfect and down to the tea with all the right info, thank you so much for posting this!
