Hey Holly! I've tasted one of those but have not grown one myself. Don't forget the white sapote for those of us that like white chocolate. Cheers!

Guava is the loveliest fruit. I love the little crunch from the seeds. I don’t peel them. Just a quick rinse under the tap and we are good to go. 😊

Hi do you have bugs in your soil? New to Perth, found lawn bugs that eat the roots of grass in our lawn, so now I'm wondering will there be bugs that eat the roots of my vege plants if I plant a garden here in WA?

Genuine question... why do you call it "sweet potato" when we call it kumara? Is it because you get more international engagement? Surely people would be interested to hear the Māori word is the more common word we use...
@SustainableHolly2 күн бұрын
They don't taste anything like our Kumara back home!! More like the orange versions you see sometimes. Even the purple ones taste different, so it doesn't feel right haha. I miss our NZ Kumara 😢

Hi Holly, can sweet potatoes be successfully grown in a climate that gets heavy frosts?

Should be fine they grow over summer so then harvest them before the frosts start

It broke open on it's own? Does it always do that when ripe? :)
@laurence62303 күн бұрын
I usually harvest mine sooner, they often crack open a bit but not as much as in the video. I’m sure it’s still edible regardless.

Great information! Do you have a list of all the varieties you’ve grown somewhere? I’ve heard that moschatas are more resistant to vine borers, so I’m trying to collect all the kinds I can. And that tip about roasting skins with seeds…🤯…I’ll be trying that!

I'm still waiting for my oranges, but the limes as usual are always on, the cumquats are also ready to be harvested and then I will move onto the tangelos. Be careful trying to grow Yuzu as they have the longest thorns. Cheers!

I have been learning about Land Race seeds. I bought Land Race kake and kale/collard tree starts and seeds which cross polinate with other Brassicas to create a race of Brassicas that acclimate to your own climate or micro climate. Here is hir dry California, cherry tomatoes l, especially Heirloom Sungold grow best. They even self seed. They also cross pollinate to create a Land Race. Keeping the seeds and seeding them year after year, thwy will acclimate.

Here in California Mediterranean climate, I grow several varieties of 1) blackberry, 2) fig, 3) pineapple guava, 4) plums, 5) apricots 6) nectarines, 7) crab apples, 8) apples, 9) mulberry, 10) pears, 11) pomegranates, 12) tea, 13) lemon grass, 14) Egyptian Walking onion, 15) Welah onions, 16) potatoes (yes perrennial, leaving them to grow wild in ground), 17) mints, 18) rosemary,19) strawberry guava, 29) sorel, 30) perrrenial chard, 31) perrenial spinach, 32) kale/collard tree, 33) lemon,34) orange, 35) bananas. Our bananas may freeze over before ripening totally but the bees love their flowers. We compost in the center of our banana circle. I am starting to learn how to graft fruit treees and pollinate brassicas with the tree kale/cllards. We have a similar climate to New Zealand. I grow New Zealand Clover. And we have ine apple tree imported to a nursery in USA. They purchased and impirted cuttings. Grew rgise into trees. Then they started new trees from curtings. I irdered their first offering. The tree is only a few years old so no apples yet. But passion fruit, its too dry here. It can grow on California coastal gardens but inland is too dry. It always dies on me.
@jedheart80599 күн бұрын
I take the guava and freeze it. Then use it to make frozen smoothies. Just add bananas or whatever - strawberry, etc.

Great to see you back . I got some Qld Arrowroot off FBM and I was so surprised how good it is. I also planted some Malabar Spinach which is edible also known as Climbing Spinach that is a prolific climber hardy and creates shade for my Kratky vegetables and greens. I love your posts especially because I am in Perth . Next step for me is water harvesting grey water especially from laundry 6 months without any real rain is not good. Love your garden Holly I have been checking in since the start.
