Kia Ora Holly, thank you for posting this information on your visit to The Fruit Tree Man Nursery in Midland. We were blessed with the fabulous Matt helping us make choices on fruiting trees for our back yard. We feel so much more confident with our selection and keeping them thriving. The car was filled to the roof literally with our bounty and look forward to booking a grafting session in the next two weeks. Matt and the team are amazing, so full of knowledge, willing to share it and offer free advice. Highly recommend anyone becoming a regular here. Got great prices and the free fertiliser is the icing on the cake. Well worth the trip from Armadale. 😀

I keep meaning to go and see the fruit tree man. I have heard lots of good things about that nursery, so looking forward to purchasing our trees from them. I definitely need to learn grafting, I have 0 clue how or why.

I was told by a commercial avocado grower to plant them on a mound, especially if land flat, so as to avoid drainage issues with clay soils and to provide a deeper bed in sandy soils. I have also visited an organic avocado orchard planted on a reasonably steep hill that was purported over 100 years old and still producing bountiful crops.

Great tips! And what a fantastic local nursery too. That kind of variety is hard to find where I live (in one nursery) so must shop around. Bit more time consuming but made easier if I know what I'm looking for. 😁 I love avocado but had almost decided not to bother with one since they get so big and take a while to get up, but now....I love the idea of a dwarf fruit tree garden!

The timing of this video couldn’t be better. I have an A & B type avocado to plant tomorrow. What a great idea to get a dwarf and graft it with the other type for a small yard! Great video. Good luck with your avocados 🥑!

Some good information in this video for people new to avocadoes; especially painting the branches/trunk while they're young. Literally paint the entire plant stem/branches when it's young, especially in hot areas of Australia like Perth. As Zechy said - the new buds will push through it easily. I also wouldn't stress about the exact species with regards to height if you're an avid gardener - unless you want to specifically keep it in a pot - as many can be comfortably kept at 3-5 meters tall with yearly pruning (eg. Reed; Sharwil etc.). What's probably more important as far as space is concerned is the spreading habit. Plants like Hass like to spread and grow tall - hence most people say they're larger varieties. In contrast, Reed and Sharwil tend to grow more upright with less of a spreading habit... so a yearly haircut up top can easily manage their size. FYI - there's a bit of debate that Gwen isn't really a dwarf avocado as many claim it to be. More of a semi-dwarf at best! They tend to start off slow, but once they're established, they can become pretty large... For fertilizer, you can pick up a specialized fertilizer called ECO-PRIME AVOCADO... it's a commercial silicate mineral based fertilizer (with added microbes) designed for avocados. It does come in 25kg bags, and I think I paid about $75 from Elder's... PS. great choice on the Sharwil! If your graft doesn't take; let me know and I can probably take some budwood off my Sharwil for you (I'm also in Perth!).

This might sound like a daft question, but where do you get the scions to graft onto your existing trees? Not just the avocado, but any fruits. I like the idea of grafting various varieties onto one fruit tree but where to get the scions?? Where do you source yours from?
