Hi! I use Hahnemuehle Bugra Paper, it's not very common to find though, even in Germany. I bind my sketchbooks with this paper for dry mediums, pastel and oil pastel. Ingres paper from Hahnemuehle is a great alternative!

Hullo Francis, I can easily see how much work you put into this video and I do appreciate your efforts! Well done. I have recently been awash in gouache requests! I have worked with watercolors for most of my life, but only gouache after college at a design firm that holds no good memories for me! I have been looking for a gouache brand other than Turners, where I have to most experience and know the impermanence of those paints! ::::sigh::::: well so I was always told!!! Thanks for this excellent overview of this Schmincke paint!
@FrancisArtStudio
@FrancisArtStudio 29 күн бұрын
Hi Michael, first off thank you for your feedback, I appreciate it! I know Schmincke isn't available or affordable everywhere so I took a look at other brands as well. Regarding permanence Winsor & Newton Designer's Gouache has good to very good permanence, except for pink and violet shades. I haven't tried them myself, but heard good things and their color range is bigger than the Schmincke Designer's. Schmincke Horadam has permanent purple and magenta as well and a large color range. Daniel Smith Gouache is not affordable for me in Europe, but has very good permanence and such a beautiful color palette. I hope you can replace those Gouache memories with some nicer ones and send best wishes, Francis ☀️

Cool vlog! I liked hearing about how you are putting routines in place. I took early retirement about a year ago, and I have been up and down with being too over-scheduled and being too under-scheduled, so it is a goal of mine to put some strong routines in place to help find the balance I most like and that is most healthy.

Thanks, Marcy! That must be a challenging and exciting time for you. I feel you with the over- and under-scheduling, some days I think I can easily take on 5 more routines, other days I can't even hydrate myself 🤦‍♀️ By now I trust my past self to have made good decisions and most times she did :D

Hello Francis. I am so very sorry for disappearing on you. I will simply leave it at health issues ramping up to new heights. Today being a good day, I finally came back to KZbin and specifically to your channel. My memory and many other cognitive abilities have been affected, but I was still somewhat horrified to note just how many videos I appear to have skipped before my complete disappearance. I thoroughly enjoyed this vlog. Despite your qualms regarding The Artists Way, you look happy and relaxed, but perhaps Dino has been working his magic upon your mood? I am extremely envious of the Van Gogh books you managed to snag for that ridiculous price. Then I watched as you recreated one of his earlier paintings and was astonished at just how well you captured not only the style, but his very essence. Your skills shouldn’t ever surprise me, but they continue to do so as you hide so much of your artistic skill from the wider KZbin world, but perhaps that is no bad thing? Having parts of your life lived online, must absolutely necessitate a need to keep as much of what you love to paint, and who you are, very close to your chest. Thank you for allowing me such a wonderful glimpse. Sending my love to you and Dino. I also send an extra ☕️ your way, from one coffee connoisseur to another. Now that I feel much more human, please know I will contact you on Instagram before Saturday to tell you when to expect your box of mysterious goodies at your new home. It is late here (coming up for 11pm), and as I have promised all not to overdo things, I will continue my attempt to find all the videos I somehow missed, before then getting to those I have been unable to watch for the past too many months until another day (or several). 🥰👩🏻‍🎨🖌️💜🥰

Hi Anita! How lovely to hear from you! :) Don't you worry about missing videos, I am honestly glad you have so many to choose from now when you feel like it. I hope they bring you some entertainment and can keep you company while you recover fully and enjoy a loooong period of good health. I currently have somewhat of a slump, not creative- but energy-wise. I am preparing for my first in-person winter market and can't really bring any excitement to the table. The last few months were more difficult than I thought at the time and I only now realize how tired I am. I therefore glady accept the coffee you sent :D Hearing from you always motivates me regarding the youtube channel and has done so once again. I know that views are low for vlogs and videos of the kind you commented on here, but I often have all the kind words you sent to me so far in mind when I make them. Comments like this make all the hours editing worthwile and have a much bigger impact than you'll ever know. Thank you for that 😊 Best wishes to you ☀️✨🌻

💡: what about an artist's apron? You practice your stamping and protect your clothes. I feel like a proper artist when I wear mine. The splotches of paint are like "art tatoos" reminding me of the work I did. I would probably stamp it with a lino print and lino textile ink. Loved your designs here, @FrancisArtStudio

Thanks! I love the postcard book. I also collect postcards from museums or places I visit. They live in a box. A book like this is a much nicer home for them. I would add some extra paper at the front and back, so the postcards are protected. I like yhe idea of not glueing the front cover. It looks cool.

Hi Berolina ☀️ Absolutely, you could easily place a sheet of glassine in between the postcards as well to protect them. With the book I finally feel good about collecting more postcards. I held myself back, because I didn't know where to put them :D

Hello. Thank you for all the info. Very helpful. Am also an Artist. A Pastel artist. Very opposite common denominators between oil, pastels and regular pastels. The drying part especially. So from stopping my pastels from smearing, fading and preserving. The is a sealer spray. Matt finish or clear or a final sealer. Is there a spray that will dry n preserve the oil pastel painting?
@FrancisArtStudio
@FrancisArtStudio Ай бұрын
Hi Roxanne! I am using Jaxell Universal Fixative, which is archival grade and works very well for me. It's an alcoholic mixture of shellack and synthetic resin. If you let the painting 'dry' for a few days and then apply the fixative spray, you'll be at least able to touch it without smudging. It will never fully dry, though. I recommend using a sketchbook with protective paper (glassine) in between each sheet. I have a video on how to make a small one yourself and I sell them in my shop as well (but it's currently closed). Best wishes, Francis ☀️

After applying linseed oil or thinner for blanding with oil pastels, could I apply fixative or varnish directly? How long should I wait for the linseed oil to dry before varnishing it? Does acrylic varnish work on linseed oil or thinner?

Do you need/use an easel with oil pastels?
@FrancisArtStudio
@FrancisArtStudio 2 ай бұрын
An easel makes painting easier for me and I use a desk easel with a full board surface. I think I listed one in my storefront equipment if you want to look that up. The different angle makes painting easier on the neck and it helps me with accidental distortion of the motif due to the different painting view.

I wish the myth that oil painting requires “chemicals” would go away. It’s simply not true. I paint in oils completely non toxic. And no I don’t use the terrible “water mixablel. You can paint n oils using absolutely nothing toxic in a non ventilated area and never know the difference

There’s a line of very safe oil painting products called Chelsea, of which spike lavender is the base. I paint with them and they work like the other toxic products. They are pricey but totally worth it to do what you enjoy and remain healthy at the same time. Essential oils are actually good to inhale. I clean with them, too.
