That second to last dunk where he floats sideways under the rim, holding the ball up like a platter of hors d'oeuvres then stuffing his whole arm down is my GOAT dunk

Thats just regular jumping… nothing special. Only non ballers are amazed… the rest are consumer fans. It takes a 42in. vertical for 6’6” player to hit head on rim… the bottom of backboard is 6 inches lower than the 10ft rim.. Many players do that. I know personally, winning multiple dunk contests and standing a 6’6” myself… MJ creates a illusion for y’all only because he has big hands and palms most of his layups and dunks… so it looks like he’s higher or looks like he’s doing something more than he really is… all his dunks are all regular dunks… mj never does dunks like even Ja Morant or LeBron’s POWER TOMAHAWK DUNKS… Just regular dunks or copies Dr J’s free throwline dunk… no original value…

he never even got his head to the rim in any of these clips let alone 6 inches above it, he had a 43 inch vert max not 48. all of the clips that make his head look level with the rim are taken from a bad perspective

The whole reason MJ is called "Air Jordan" is a sentiment to his unmatched place in basketball history as the goat! When defenders jumped with MJ he would always float like a butterfly then sting like a bee! R.i.p Ali
@kian87584 ай бұрын
He definitely could have gotten his head above the rim by a few inches. Also, he has the best furthest dunk out of anyone because his head is actually still close to the rim when he cocked the ball back on his free throw line dunk. At that time, dunking was still evolving. I have no doubt, if Jordan played today his head would be 6 inches above the rim on his highest jumps.

Btw, jumping with the ball is harder because you cannot get your full arm swing, not because the weight of the ball.

None of those plays were Jordan's head even or surpassed the rim. If he actually had a 48 inch vertical at 6'6, his head would've been way above the rim on some of these jumps

Yea maybe somewhere around 43-44 inches which is still pretty insane

I still haven’t seen anyone hang or jump like him since. There are guys who can leap higher, but the way he just defies gravity so gracefully the moment he takes off is unique to him. It doesn’t matter whether it’s one or two feet either.
@youfellforthebait25557 ай бұрын
he doesn't defy gravity. your hangtime is based on your vert. you go up the same amount of time you go down

@6:41 that’s pretty accurate .. he rarely felt the need to jump as high as possible, he had to jump thru the defenses, making contact and absorbing it, making mid air adjustments to score… safer too knowing how the game was played in those days, jump really high and another player cuts underneath you is risky. And yes to conserve energy for a more physical era of basketball

Combination of hops and INSANE SPEED. That’s what nobody can replicate. Many players can jump. Many are quick. But nobody could combine both to that degree.
@manny49356 ай бұрын
Yeah they can. From Zach Lavine to Westbrook to lebron. You really underestimate how athletic many pro players are. They just aren’t as good at basketball as a whole so they don’t get the attention mike does
@ryandouglas8382 Жыл бұрын
Anytime you see an MJ dunk where the TOP of his head is at the rim is a 44 inch vert because the rim is 10ft, minus his height. There are many where he's neck gets bent like the one at North Carolina. This shows proof it's not just the top of his head, it's higher which shows he has a 48-50in vert

Based on Numbers For Mj TO have 48 inch vert His Head has to be above the rim almost halfway from the top of the small white square based on numbers height (6'6" = 78 inches) + 48 inch = 126 Inches Basketball Rim height (10' = 120 inches) White square height is 18 including the bottom part of the square, so estimated 17 inch = 137 inches So Mj no Doubt can reach 48 inches with the full vertical leap motion arm swing + penultimate step I believere 1988-90 would've been his peak jumping form
