The Greatest there ever will be. No doubt MJ combined vertical with horizontal energy to create the optimum arc for a dunk or layup. MJ's hand size also used the ball as leverage in jumps so he could even create more kinetic energy into the jump - no one has this unique ability, you can even see MJ do this with two hands with the absurd hanging jumpshot at 5:22 - look how he throws the ball up and pulls on it to get even more hang time. No one has ever had this ability to naturally coordinate physics with his body and MJ could do this with one hand as well as you can see in the very next move at 5:28. His giant hand allows him to use physics with the ball to pull on it and create a split second more hang time.This is why MJ is the most amazing singular athlete ever- he has maximum extraordinary natural gifts in skill and physics and the body to pull it off. If MJ did a max effort up and down it would be bananas, I say 50 inches easy. Just one of the unknowns of his limitless abilities.

The greatest athlete of all time. I'm a born/raised Chicagoan. I saw Michael at their home stadium four times. No matter how fast and how athletic he looked on TV, in person he was far more spectacular. What showed up in person far more than on TV was the GREAT DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MICHAEL JORDAN AND EVERYONE ELSE ON THE COURT in - !!!everything!!! Speed, cutting, leaping, passing, faking, juking, flexibility, strength, decision-making, rebounding, blocking, dribbling, shooting. His better-than-Globetrotters touch with the basketball was unbelievable. In addition, Michael Jordan was the most-graceful, balanced, poetic being in motion in history. And yet, I believe his greatest strength was his competitiveness. I believe he burned more calories per game and overall than any other player in the history of the game. That level of will power combined with athleticism was jaw-dropping every single game he played. We who watched him explode on the scene and dominate from Day 1 to his last day in the NBA are fortunate. There will never be another. I mean absolutely no disrespect to any other NBA player or other athlete. It's hard to imagine that there ever was or could ever be another athlete like Michael Jordan.

MJ is reported to be 6'5.5" (not actually a full 6'6"), but we don't know if that is when in socks and shoes or bare feet. So, when he is heads with the rim (obviously wearing socks and shoes), he is then at either a 41.5" or 42.5" vertical. The claims that he had a 48" to 50" vertical do not add up and unfortunately will never be witnessed. If it were true, his head would be 5.5" to 8.5" above the rim and there is no video footage of that having ever happened. The highest leap footage in public-known existence shows a clip where right at the beginning of a Bucks game, where he wasn't tired, but a young, warmed-up MJ, a 44.5" to 45.5" vertical (without jumping with the ball) is witnessed at 3:47 in this video. If you follow the bottom of the backboard angle with a straight edge and slide that same angle down until it touches the middle of the rim on the right side of the rim, it then projects to the left, until it first touches the top of MJs eye brows. That is about 3" above the rim. I wish there was a straight-on camera angle to dually verify this. This is a true and accurate approach called projective geometry, that they teach in engineering college. So, the highest we've ever witnessed him jump is either 41.5" + 3" = 44.5", or, 42.5" + 3" = 45.5". One could average that and say 45", or one could round up to as high as 46", but 48" to 50" seems unlikely, based on all the footage we have of him mostly never even at heads with the rim. I have a 36" vertical, jumping without the ball and using a running start, and I can say that in the footage I have of myself, that my 36" best was reached in many games on video. So, our highest leap is not only found off-court, in an isolated, perfect scenario. It can be and is witnessed during game times. That's why I also stand on this approach I'm taking here to be pretty darn close. I'd say 45" to 46" is what it really was for MJ. What doesn't make sense to me is that he also achieved heads with the rim from the free-throw line, off 1 foot, with the ball. You would think that if you can run that fast and jump that high off 1 foot from that far, with the ball, that if you jumped as hard and as high as you could without the ball, not having to cover that distance, that your vertical would be maybe as much as 5" higher. The 5" is my experience from attempting to jump as far as I could, where that height for me was about 5" lower than my highest vertical. Taking this loose approach, you could then say his potential is heads with the rim, plus 5". So, that'd be 46.5" to 47.5". However, for MJs jumping style, from seeing all his footage, I don't think this approach fits what we've seen from his style results. What we see and calculate is not 5" for him, but a 3" difference here. This speaks to his 'hang-time' that people say about him, why he is called "his airness". He literally hangs at near his peak height longer that most, at least seemingly. This can only be explained by whatever motions he does from leap to land, to optimize momentum. Yes, I am an engineer. Both approaches I've offered in this little novel of a comment here, land then between 44.5" and 47.5" at very best, still not in the 48" to 50" range. With this, one could say his average is 46". I think we all can agree that his vertical was AROUND 46". MJ is the GOAT in basketball, just not in vertical leap, unfortunately. James White can get well above heads with the rim from the free-throw line. He was 6'9", but that's still a 3" higher vertical leap than MJs. There are dunkers that are barley over 5' dunking as well and jumpers with verticals well into the 50s, dare I say 60". Anyway, MJ is still the best dunker ever. Power, height, creativity, naturalness, beauty, originality, iconicness, and revolutionary-ness. Then, doing that twice in 2 dunk contests, as a 2-time champion. He also had a cool look to him and 'the shoes'. There will NEVER be another MJ -- Simply never ever.

His maximum vertical was 48" (4 feet, still to this day the NBA record), he is 6'6", that means if he were to jump and hit his max vertical, his head would be 6 inches above the rim.

Ne never had that. Show me one timestamp from this video where he's even remotely close... On every single jump he 35-40 inches of the ground tops..Its called cult worship. Wanna see 48? Look at vince gerald green derrick jones dennis smith or dunkers kilgannon will bunton so on so force... He is literally i do mean literally halfway lower of the ground than any of the gyus i mention. You need to pause in mid air? - pause. Need to run slow mo to make sure - do it. Then pause and see where 45+ guys' legs are of the ground when they jump - their lower extremities are almost twice higher of the ground than mj ever could get. He is goat player and sells more sneakers so he must be kept number 1 at everything to continue making the most money for people who own him. His statistics are hugely manipulated. They film adds of him in slow mo and call products "air jordan" so then people whos on the cult worship use that as example saying: he could fly and asking why do you think they call him air than??? @@LedgerLiner dude mj jumped 48, they measured it officially in college. His head almost hit the rim 6:55, jumping sideways off one foot, legs flared, elbow pointing down, he almost dunked his elbow like vince , with the ball in hand traveling about 6 feet to other side of rim. Imagine him jumped off two feet, going straight up, with no ball, both arms straight up and he could probably hit 48 inches.

@@LedgerLiner imagine yourself jumping sideways while trying to do a reverse dunk with a ball in your hand, while your whole body is gliding sideways about 5 feet. Now imagine jumping straight up with no ball in hand, as high as you can. Which would make your vertical higher? The first one is focused on doing a dunk 6:55 but MJ still jumped 42 inches. 10 ft - 6 ft 6= 42 inches. Now imagine the second one where he just tries to jump as high as he can with no jumping side ways and no ball in hand and not trying to do a fancy sideways leaner dunk. He would probably add a few inches . 7:03 is fancy sideways dunk with ball in hand= 42 inches. Imagine no ball, just running and jumping straight up as high as he can= possibly 46-48 inches.

@Morlich2097 жыл бұрын
5:36 is actually from the 1993 playoffs when MJ was 30. But yes, I would say his athletic prime was from 1984-around 1992. He started to develop tendonitis in the early 90's which hampered his jumping.

That's because MJ packed on a lot of muscle around 1991 that reduced his vertical by quite a bit.

That wasn't his prime. The 80s were his first 6 years in the league. Your prime starts around 28 and lasts about 5 years or so. He was 28 when he won his first title in 91. So that was the beginning of his prime. And he missed a year and a half of it when he left the NBA in 1993.

@6:41 that’s pretty accurate .. he rarely felt the need to jump as high as possible, he had to jump thru the defenses, making contact and absorbing it, making mid air adjustments to score… safer too knowing how the game was played in those days, jump really high and another player cuts underneath you is risky. And yes to conserve energy for a more physical era of basketball

Anytime you see an MJ dunk where the TOP of his head is at the rim is a 44 inch vert because the rim is 10ft, minus his height. There are many where he's neck gets bent like the one at North Carolina. This shows proof it's not just the top of his head, it's higher which shows he has a 48-50in vert

I think the highest jump I've seen is the famous fist pump jump after hitting the buzzer beater against the cavaliers. I'm surprised noone has analyzed that one. I've watched MJ his entire career and that one always stood out. It's hard to understand how high he was due to the camera following him in the air. MJ never jumped as high as he could, he only jumped high enough to complete his play or dunk smoothly and to conserve energy as we know. But this time the adrenaline from the shot gave him the moment to release all the energy he had at that moment, and he also didn't have the ball. I used to work in film in Hollywood and I've analyzed that jump many times and I've come to the conclusion that he's at least chin height to the rim. I would like more experts to analyze that jump.
